Lionel Postwar 2350 EP-5 NH freight running session

One of my Spring York show additions gets running time (smoothly) dragging some rolling stock around the layout. This 2350 was very well maintained and cared for by its previous owners. Always fun to find an engine (w/ex OB) in this great shape, and at a fair price. Looking forward to seeing it run more freight and even passenger trains on the ever expanding layout.

Excellent post-war themed layout and video. I love post-war Lionel because I was raised with it. Thanks for sharing.

In 2012 my 15 × 25 foot highrail layout was featured in Classic Toy Trains magazine. Took a year to build and cost $11,000. After enjoying all the fun of digital trains and accessories, I sold the entire layout two months ago in order to go back to my roots. I am planning a much more modest layout that will be 100% pure postwar. Nothing made after 1960 will be on it. It's time to bring out my unrun Lionel sets from the 1950s and share them with the world (once I learn how to create a YT channel).

I can understand that plan. I was 100% postwar at one time, but the layout now is leaning towards high rail, and I do enjoy running the few MTH DCS engines I own. Thinking I’ll move the scale, hightail buildings to the new layout and revert back to postwar on the current layout. Can’t wait to see yours. Take pics of the build for a timeline video.

I subscribe to the KISS system ( Keep It Simple Stupid ). My brain doesn't get a workout every time I run my trains. That said, my post-war type layout uses Lion-Chief Plus motive power. I like the slow speed that can be accomplished with LC+. So spotting freight cars at the various operating accessories is a bit easier.

Very impressed with the way you crafted that mountain with tunnels. Looks exactly like white dolemite granite with alpine green moss. What did you use to make it, and how did you carve it?

Thanks again! I started with window screening over a cardboard frame. Woodland scenic plaster cloth, etc., first coat of paint was a dark green, then I dry brushed(splotched) in multiple shades of gray and some black. I used mostly acrylic paints from Michael’s for those - .99 a sm bottle. Grasses and shrubs were all train show under-the-table Woodland scenic bags that I mixed together.

Oh my gosh! This layout is well planned with plenty of action. And the track plan is fascinating. Turnouts, intersecting track and graduated levels. How many, and what are the accessories on the layout? I can't wait to see your next creation. I subscribe to Classic Toy Trains, print and digital. And which issue may I find the article? Thanks again.

Thanks! I actually was thinking about an accessory video. There are many more than in the original plan including Prewar, Postwar, MPC and LTI. The Ed Schwartz(?) layout was featured in CTT March 1994 (Vol 7 No. 2). That was based on two 4’x8’ tables in an L shape. Mine currently has expanded to 6’x8’ L and a 2’x4’ add-on. Again, thanks for your nice comment!

John you know I LOVE your layout, as I have mentioned in the past - BUT - if there was ONE thing I would add, it would be the addition of a second track so you could have 2 trains running in opposite directions. That is the only drawback to this track plan from 1994. What are your thoughts?

  • @JohnETrains

Thanks Paul! I have thought about adding sections to the tables to support a two-track outer loop. I’d settle for space for a trolley line inside of the layout. All said, I have a 16’x18’ area adjacent to this layout all ready for a second layout…

That’s the backside of the Woodland Scenics Morrison Doors Factory. As much as I enjoy building the kits, when I first saw this WS pre-built and lighted building I could not resist. Also added their Records and Recruiting building.

I’d like to, but have a slight snag. I followed a track plan from an article in Classic Toy Trains March 1994. I asked for permission to scan and post the plan that’s part of the article and CTT declined - is intellectual property that’s available through their magazine archive service. That said, I’ve tried to recreate using a track planning software but have yet to master that. It’s on my list though…
