Another word to the wise, looking back at past decisions is how we make better judgment in the present and knows the mistake we do now. We all know past arguments about Ribery, Iniesta should've won instead. Sure, then so and so scored more hence why he won. Then we talked about achieving with your national squad matter most. Tell me, who in 2010 excelled more than his team for Spain? Xavi, Iniesta, Cassilas, Ramos, Villa, Puyol. No one performed better than the rest. In 2014? Same thing with Neuer, Muller, Özil, Kroos, etc. And with France in 2018 with Mbappe, Griezman, Pogba, Kante, Lloris etc. But 2022, Messi was head and shoulders above the rest of his squad, that is why he won 5 MOTMs in 7 games. He carried what was an average Argentina club to the holy grail of football. He won the silver boot, Golden Ball, had joint most assists and most MOTMs. No one has ever dominated World Cup like that.

I am a huge Messi fan and have been following and enjoying his career for years, but the Ballon d'Or is not an objective award. It is story-driven, it is social driven, it's hype-driven award. Think of it this way: Emmi Martinez doesn't make that last minutes kick save, France win back-to-back World Cups with Mbappe scoring a hat trick in the Final and awarded FIFA Golden Shoe. The narrative totally changes completely, all because of a fraction of a second that had nothing to do with their individual performances in the tournament. An INDIVIDUAL award that is heavily weighted by TEAM success is ridiculous. If that football is a few inches higher above Emmi's leg, Messi is not winning the Ballon d'Or and the story changes to he "failed to win a World Cup" and "Mbappe is the new GOAT". Messi's performance would have been EXACTLY the same, but we could have had a COMPLETELY different narrative, all based on a freak chance moment that could have gone either way and had no basis on Messi's or Mbappe's performances. Social narratives are ridiculous and extremely biased. And it's what this award is based on. Messi's incredible World Cup performance would not have changed AT ALL if they lost in PK's or France scores at the last minute. Messi doesn't need the Ballon d'Or for me to know his worth.

This. The truth hurts. That being said, us as a species are all story-driven aren't we. We pay for stories wherever we go - think of luxury cars, iPhone, why Tom Cruise actually rode a bike off a cliff (as opposed to doing it in CGI). People attribute value to them because they tell a good story, and the Ballon Dor is no exception.

Totally agree with this. In 2014 people were saying to be the best of all time, Messi needed the World Cup. So Higauin and Palacio miss chances that prevent Messi being the best. The Champions League has also been the same. There were years when Ronaldo did very little in finals, but won the award because his team got him over the line. So his brilliance was only fully recognised because his team stepped up. It's a very difficult award to say who deserves it, because there are so many factors that go into it. Personally I agree with Lineker; if it was truly about the best individual, Messi would win it every year

Messi was simply incredible at the World Cup but I think you’re right, had France won the shootout, mbappe would’ve been the hero with the not only a hat trick but a crazy comeback. Personally I think Haaland deserved it a little more because he broke the goal record in his first season in the premier league, which is the best league in the world, and he won a treble which included City’s first champions league trophy.

I think Kane is currently doing better than the 3 others you mentioned, and if Euro is gonna have a big impact, we may just count out Haaland already.

Putting the World Cup aside like Jules said, Messi had a good season in Ligue 1, had most assists, scored crucial beautiful goals winning the League by 1 point difference. He had to carry them as PSG were really poor. Haaland doesn't have much individual performances if you take away his Premier League tapins. He was invisible in all the Semi-Finals and Finals which City played. City's key players were the likes of Rodri, Silva and Gundo who turned up in big games.

If Modric can win the Ballon d'Or over Messi despite having far less throughput, then there is no reason Messi doesn't win it over Haaland with slightly less.

Messi's impact and value this season cannot be quantified basically. Him finally winning the WC, and the performance he gave at his age + attitude and inspiration he gave everyone to never give up is what convinced the voters. 92 years of WC history, 22 world cups in total, and never was the WC called a 7 game tournament until Messi won it (I wonder why). Pele was reigned as the GOAT because of the WC tournaments, Maradonaa was also reigned as the GOAT mainly because of the WC and no one ever had an issue with that. R9, Canavarro, Zidane Modric, etc all won the Ballon'dor mainly because of the stand out WC performance they had and no one hada problem. But then when Messi finally wins the WC and puts in a performance of a lifetime because of everything he did not just goals, now the WC somehow becomes a "7 game tournament". Make it make sense. Messi is simply the greatest of all time and I guess for some people that's really hard to accept and prefer making excuses.

Haaland scored many goals, but went missing in big games. City could win all they won with a decent striker as well, they were lacking one for quite a few years.

What do you mean by he didn't play great for PSG. That 36 year old dude had the highest assists in Ligue 1, second highest in Europe, was top 10 in goal scoring in Ligue 1. 16goals, 16assists, 32g/a for a league season is a great performance definitely not as great as his older standards but still better than 98% of other players in Europe. He even had a better league season than Debruyne, who was even arguably Mancity's best player in my opinion.

Yes, he deserves it. The world cup is not just 7 games. The world cup takes 2 or 3 years (depending on the continent you are from). The reason Haaland did not participate in the world cup is because he did not qualify. Proving that it is not easy to participate let alone win the world cup. So yes Not only did Messi qualify, he won it and therefore deserves it

Lets be real Bellingham is playing great but is having alot of luck. He goes missing constantly in games outside of scoring like on Saturday. Once that scoring and lucky bounces slows down he will come back down to his level as a wolrd class CM but not best player in the world.

Based on the stats displayed on the screen messi had 63 goal contributions. Halaand has 66. A difference of three. They both have won 3 trophies but the World Cup trophy gave Messi that edge. Tbh he deserves it 2:31

Messi scored 38 goals and 25 assists at age of 35…He won 3 trophies one of which is the World Cup…He was by far the best player at the World Cup..I don’t care what anyone says, Messi truly deserves this award…It’s much easier to win champions league and domestic leagues, but it’s much more difficult to win a World Cup…Many players have won champions league or domestic leagues, but only a few have won the World Cup…Messi deserves ballon d’or…

Ironic that Uber Eats stats all of the sudden matter and are important when Messi plays there, but before then when Neymar and Mbappe putting up the same numbers every single year and no one cares because it's stat padding lol. Biggest robbery of all time.

What he means is a consistent league tournament with a good stat + world cup = winner. Leo stat in league is not average, in fact we can say it is really good. But it is not the best stat compare to Haland. However if you add the world cup, the level is tilted to Messi side. If Leo has a bad stat in league, 5 assists & 5 goals for example, no body gonna vote him over Halland

Jules pls u read the changes in the balloon d'or criteria for winning it. This award was for a season not a year. And the world Cup was made the main subject for winning this seasons award.

No BALLON D'OR isn't fair. Mbappé did better than Messi for the same club they played in, and in the World Cup. Instead of being the winner, Mbappé is 3rd today just because 2 other guys missed their penalties. How fair is that?

People forget that Messi’s whole year wasnt bad either it was good as well with amazing stats, when you add the WC on top of it and that amazing performance its a no brainer.

Here is not only about winning the World Cup but he became on only player to win MOM award in seven consecutive matches, the second leading goal scorer in the World Cup, and many other things. They both win three trophies. Harland is only ahead of Messi with only goals full stop and the rest is Messi.

I personally think Haaland should have won this one, but I understood why he didn’t. I thought at times, Messi played poorly at PSG, and I think that if this award is based on 1 collective year, it should have been Haaland. Individually, he had a better year with just as meaningful of trophies with a treble. This felt very much like celebrating Messi for his career, but it shouldn’t be about that.

Haaland plays in a team where his duty is just to score and he is good at it 100%. argentina was a team who was struggling to qualify for wc and he turned them into champions. The city could have won this treble with or without haaland.they are such a great team.but without messi argentina couldn't have won the worldcup.

The thing that shines so much about Messi's world cup win is the pressure he was under. The pressure of previous losses, the pressure of knowing that it's his last world cup, the pressure of having lost the first game and having to absolutely win every single game from that point on... to stand up under that pressure and put in the kind of performance he did, right up until the last whistle, requires a willpower of cold forged steel. Multiply that by the fact that this world cup was one of the most memorable in the modern era. The highlights from this tournament will be played for years to come, which is not something I expect to see from many of Haaland's goals, as great as they were. This is not an award about stats, like the golden boot. This award is about those intangible qualities that separate the greats from the absolute greatest, and for those reasons, I think Messi is the clear winner.

People ignore the fact Mbappé started 23/24 season with no preseason and then September 12 he dealt with discomfort only for on the 24th he gets an ankle sprain and after that he was not playing at his best but even before his injury he scored 7 goals in 4 games (3 full games). No body cares about context, Jude is great but it’s sad how football fans and journalists are so quick to write Mbappé off.😐

Soooo.... if winning the world cup is mandatory, than Haaland will never win it ever, and i say that as a norwegian.I guess he could win it in the gap years between the euroes and the world cups but come on... a treble should really count more than a world cup. (Frankly, i do not think trophies should count at all. Its an individual awarde. It should go to whoever have performed their role on the field best as an individual that year).
