RIP Lionel Hampton (April 20, 1908 - August 31, 2002), aged 94 You will be remembered as a legend.
Look at the fun these musicians are having. This is how live music should be played, it's so pure and simple.
Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente, and Robert "Bo" Wagner.. Three genius' in heaven playing together for all eternity.. God Bless..
Had the privilege of not only seeing him in person, but playing this signature song, and grabbing a bite to eat with him after an outdoor concert back in the 70s. A true gentleman. Still have the menu he autographed for me. #FlyingHome

Awesome. I was a fan since I was a little kid, and I remember much later that there was a fire in his high rise apartment decades ago. Cool you were able to met him!

That's SO COOL! I have only met legends, but I haven't broken bread with them. Only one famous actor, but he is not a Legend. But he was super cool.
Saw him once at Interlochen National Music Camp. He was about 70 then. He had all the teenagers from around the world on their feet almost the entire concert! He kicked every self aggrandizing rock star's butt that night. On a vibraphone.
You've had a long day, you've done some hard work that proved itself futile in the end, and you're feeling like crap, but then you find an old video of Lionel playing some good vibes, and you just feel right and good again, flying home indeed.

I have to add to all of these comments guy's, because they're 100% true! Ah the "healing power" of music! It nourishes your very soul, it isn't biased, it transcends all languages, it brings us together! Jazz guitarist RIP Larry Coryell in a Chicago club one night said this," give us this day our daily Chord Changes"!
Best kind of magic ever captured.
Hampton, Armstrong, Goodman and Miller were my dad's absolute musical favorites back in the 40's. Guess how difficult and even life threatening it was for a young German soldier listening to forbidden allied radio stations back then.

Good music is good music and it crosses all barriers
This was originally recorded in 1942 and music historians have stated that this is one of the first rock 'n' roll records. Great stuff fun to see the drummer and bass player in the groove.

1939 was Lionel's first recording (much much slower version, less vibraphone)
I am in the vibraphone in middle school top honor jazz band
Lionel was the best. No words do him justice.
A stipulation of my will is that "Flying Home" is to be played at my funeral.
Always admired Lionel's perfect metronomic time, while swinging like hell at the same time. Let alone his beautiful melodic lines

I just keep coming back to this recording. Love this simple but beautiful rhythmic line at 1:25
When I was ten years old (in 1960), my Dad bought me a Lionel Hampton album. I immediately fell in love with it, and have remained faithful to this master ever since.

this dude is so animated and fluid while he plays, it's unreal

You literally can't sit still and listen to this... I love it
Saw him at the North Sea Jazz festival in early 80's.... awesome energy great performance
still here for this on my own (and of course Roy Ayers) :)
J’ai brisé 2 fauteuils à Paris al’Olympia en 1958 lors de sa visite MÉMORABLE
A national treasure ..... simply incredible .... incredible
I could listen to Lionel play ALL DAY. The vibes - definitely one of my favorite instruments to play, and one that doesn't get featured nearly enough. Thank goodness we had Lionel Hampton! Thanks for posting!
I want to be like this guy when I grow up
It's the quiet murmuring that just makes this swing even more
Saw him in D.C. in the early 70s. He did a drum solo that included walking around and playing on a couple of tabletops hitting glasses, plates etc..
Spine chills
The whole damn band is red hot. Why can't we have TV like this today?
yup... as a technical death metal fan, as a musicophile, .... ¸ as a bass xylophone player through high school... this is just soothing for the soul. God of the xylophones (family of instrument)
This is part of what made America so great and swingin'! We ought to bring it all back!
i saw him work once..and he was truly amazing................til this day, i love his music.
The Flyin' Home is the best of Lionel's hits
When I was like 13 yrs old (1983), Disneyland used to have these Disneyland Jazz weekends and I got to sit right underneath Lionel Hampton at the Carnation Plaza. I was only 13 then, but even then I knew I was in the presence of greatness.
That was tight tight tight. Darn, that was tight!
LIONEL HAMPTON WAS AMAZING !!!
Grew up hearing his music. Life long love of it ensued
I'm a big fan of all music, modern music included, but you never get to the end of the songs and feel like how this makes you feel. This song is a musical experience!
Lionel Hampton is awesome
Ah, this man was amazing. Everything is right in synch, from feet to fingertips, down to that very last jump. Loved him as a kid and cherish his music and those of his generation even more today.

I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. The music today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
Oh, yeah. Thanks for posting!
He looks pleased with himself and so he should be!! Genius
What a kick to have these old classics, thankfully, our kids will enjoy this as much as we.
This is ridiculously cool. And those guys in his band are obviously having a blast. Mr Hampton is magnetic - you cannot take your eyes off him. Simply awesome! 👌👌👌
That solo by Illinois Jaquet was so great that Hamp went back and learned it so he could play it on vibes. It's practically a prerequisite for young sax players
& All THAT JAZZ :-) ♥♡
Wow!! He was amazing!!
Now ... thats COOL ! Would say : Perfect ... !
I'm playing this song on alto for my final HSC piece and it just isn't the same without a vibraphone playing. Lionel Hampton is truly talented.
Now THAT's a tight rhythm section!
this guys rocked so hard... since that times, very few musicians could so such amazing things!
Прекрасно!
Du grand jazz, avec des sons lumineux, fantastiques qui nous dynamisent avec joie!!! Bravo Lionel

Oh man what a boss.
That's is one crispy high stepping groove and the way roasty toasty giddyup in his style of riffing. Just springing up brightly round every corner. Just every bit bursting with vitality

Hamptom specialized in swing music as a roaring exhilaration.

WOW!!! he is amazing!!
Birthday today. Congrats!
vibraphone sounds excellent accompanied with the tenor saxaphones. the "chunk chunk chunk" rhythm (with dble bass, guitar, drum) feel is very eminent.
Even Patti Page looked hot introducing Hamp!
Great to watch and listen to a jazz master at work! Thank you for sharing this gem. Peter
@KickBack90sBeats He toured lot in the 70s. I saw his band several times including when he did a concert my junior year (1979) at my alma mater, Hampton University.
Go, Lionel, go! The bass player isn't too shabby, neither!! Great recording, thanks muchly :-D
I play mallets, percussion, and drums like Lionel Hampton. This guy was a great musician.
