As a mom this hit me differently. I took it as a warning to NEVER push my agenda on my children but help them thrive into their own. I may have chosen a different path, however I’ll de DAMNED if my kids felt judged by me for their choices. I want only the best for my kids and I’ll do my best to empower them to be their best. My kids are awesome and I’m damn proud of both of them.

That is the way I took it too when my youngest daughter used to play it... I love their music, and when she unexpectedly left this World, I took comfort in listening to her favorite songs, Linkin Park being one of her favorites. Needless to say, when he passed away, I felt like my daughter left me again... I cried for days....RIP Chester & D$VA

Reminds me of my parents thank you for being understanding of kids struggle to understand life. It’s easier said than done to figure out your path. Nothing gender identify wise, I mean job wise, sexuality is fine too but my struggle is I have a business management degree but can’t find a job & I can’t imagine having a disability or disease. Complaining when my body works just fine as of now

This came out when I was a teen. Being a nerd and an artist, I never tried to be part of the popular group because I loved that I could just be myself with my fellow nerds. Now as an adult, I want to make sure my nephew will grow up with someone that will always support what HE likes and what he WANTS to try to do. Let him explore his interests and support him when he does finally have an idea what he wants. I want him to feel safe to chase his own dreams and be himself.

Goddammit Asia. You've nearly got me in tears here from the truth you're speaking around 4 minutes in. I was one of those kids. I was a shaken baby, and my right side is partially paralyzed. I walk with a limp, I've worn glasses since I was 6, and I was incredibly smart as a child. Grade school and Junior High were HELL for me. I was bullied, teased, called every name imaginable... it was a nightmare. Being smart didn't help; I got along a lot better with adults, so I was a "teachers' pet" as well. Ironically, the physical injury was, or became rather, the least of all the problems. I learned to adapt to the differences in how my body worked relatively easily. The emotional and mental trauma that I went through over those 8 or so years though broke me in ways I'm sure I'll never understand completely. Now I'm 37, unemployed, living on SSDI, single, lonely, and as much as I need someone to be there for me, to help me without judgment or prejudice, I often feel like I have nothing to really offer in return. What self-esteem I have is about as strong as a Kleenex, holding together great as long as I don't need to do anything at all. So thank you for your words; they've touched my heart. To talk a bit about this song, it, along with the entire Meteora CD, was one of the biggest things that got me through much of my 20s, and even now, in my late 30s, I still relate to a lot of the songs on it. There are days, despite my best efforts, where I still feel like it is easier to run than to face all this pain here all alone. I'm still looking for somewhere I belong, and most days I feel emotionally numb because I'm scared of losing myself to my emotions without having someone to guide me back to 'me'. So yeah. Dammitall for making me feel this way tonight... and thank you.

I always took it as *("I want to be more like me & less like you" "somebody used to be disappointed in you") a child parent situation where the parent is disappointed in the choices you make but it's your life to choose & your parents did the same when they were your age and somebody was disappointed in their decisions

  • @azuredragon7879

Agree. It feels like it's about parental pressure being placed on the child to be what the parent wants them to be instead of what the child really is. Sadly, it's a repetitive cycle.

I feel like it's about both to be honest. Societal/peer expectations along with parental expectations. The expectations are linked to bullying, again from both groups. If you don't live up to what they want you to do, when they want you to do it, you get berated and ostracised for it.

I have fucked up so much in my life, but one thing I am proud of myself about is that I have always defended and tried to befriend people that seemed to me like that had no one else. I didnt care if I self-deteriorate and negelected my own problems if I could make one person think about their life a little bit better, I feel like my life wasnt wasted. I feel like most of us have similar feelings and thoughts that you guys are talking about despite any gender/race/sexual orientation differences, and the more people sending that message to everyone around us will impact the world more than any of us can know. As always, you guys are amazing.

I like your reflections on this song. I see many just narrow it doing to not living up to their parents expectations. But I feel and think this song is trying to express it broader, how society almost expects everyone to be the same and to follow the same paths. It can be also be how we can feel trapped in our bodies. The reason I said this is because a few months before my mom died because of long term alchol abuse, I told her: "You know you will die if you continue this?". Her reply was: "I do not feel much anymore, I feel numb". In the end, her body was too much to fight against alone.

I think that if we all look at things that way, we'd be in a better place. Nice job guys - keep up the great work!

7:52 I like that BJ pointed out the musical complexity of Linkin Park here. Mostly what you hear about is the emotional impact of the music (which is undeniably significant), but these guys had a technical proficiency that left them a cut above many, if not most, of their peers.

Ohhh, PLEASE continue down the Linkin Park rabbit hole. Do you ever do album reactions? I recommend start with Hybrid Theory and then move to Meteora. Not ONE bad song on either of them. They will always be my favorite band. Chester (and Mike) both talke straight about how they were feeling and Chester poured his heart out with truth in his lyrics. He bared his soul. RIP, beautiful Chester.

First off I just want to say I love y'all!! For me your reaction channel is right up there with No Life Shaq. LP came along during a very dark time in my life and through their music help me to pull through because it made me feel like someone out there understands what I was dealing with. I have a very broad range of music that I listen to and have seen a lot of talent go away entirely too soon. Chester's death for me personally was by far the most tragic. Please react to "Given Up" Live at AOL. This performance in hindsight gives you a better perspective of the inner pain Chester was dealing with. Thanks Asia & BJ.

I remember when Chester,Mike,Joseph (my guy at the mix and scratch table),Brad aka "Big Bad Brad"(shredding the guitar),Dave aka The Phoenix rocking the bass and Rob behind the drums first had a breakthrough. Soo many from the hard rock, metal communities threw major shit on them, because they were not completely metal. Back then i was a metalhead,i still consider myself one. But Linkin Park was something unique for me,i had never heard anything like it,and they mixed several genres together so perfectly. And every member so incredibly talented,i was hooked right away. Even Mike Shinoda who can basically do anything, but is best known as the rapper in the band,is still to this day very underrated as a rapper. He is a brilliant songwriter and producer as well. Have you checked out his sideproject yet? Fort Minor, they got several beautiful, great songs. If you havent checked them out, give this one a go for starters: "Where'd You Go - Fort Minor (feat. Holly Brook & Jonah Matranga) (Official Video)" Then if you loved that one,and want the full on Fort Minor to bring it: Fort Minor-Remember The Name. That last one gets people hyped!

This song is about the parent smothering their child and not letting them become what they want to be. It's not about bullying or being an outcast.

I didn’t read through all 273 comments but there’s a lot of talk that Tyler Joseph of twenty one pilots wrote their song Neon Gravestones with Chester in mind. I don’t know if there’s any truth to that but you should listen to Neon Gravestones. It’s an incredible song. It takes Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and he reimagines it. it’s so beautiful.

Asia, I'm gonna throw a line at you. "If your run into one asshole during the day, they are probably actually the asshole....If you run into assholes all day long.....then you are the asshole." Just Paraphrasing what you said, it was on point. 😁 And BJ, the Chester thing, it so much harder now for me as well. It hit me hard back in the day but something just feels different.ff

You want a song that speaks on just how much pain he was in and no one noticed until he was gone, listen to given up. There’s one scream in particular where you can literally FEEL his pain. It’s truly sad how little people noticed his words were cries for help.

You are right about the bullying. But it’s also about trying to fill your parents shoes and the pressure of high expectations from them. Then if you find out that maybe you don’t want the same things your dad wants for you. It’s a situation many young people experience. Asia hit the nail on the head.
