Linkage vs Parallel Positioning - Boiling Point

Ғылым және технология

On today's Boiling Point, Ritchie talks with Gerald Blain, director of sales, about traditional burner management systems.
While linkage systems might be cheaper on the upfront cost of the boiler installation, over time slippage occurs which causes loss in efficiency and increase in fuel usage. Ultimately, this system will cost you more due to fuel usage.
Parallel Positioning uses motors to directly drive the system. This system allows for better fine tuning, without being tied or constrained by the other movements occurring. The potentiometer allows the operator to know the exact position of the valve.
Watch the video to learn more. Don't forget, we will be at AHR January 25-27. Come see us at booth #1659.
Questions answered in this video:
What is a single point system?
What is parallel positioning?
What is a modulating motor?
What is a Lo-N0x system?
What is an independent linkage system?
How does a change in one movement affects other movements?
Why would someone pick the linkage vs the linkageless system?

I’m with a heating contractor in NYC, single point positioning is here in a big way, now with the removal of 6 oil all the buildings are firing gas mostly with 2 oil as back up and below 20deg F, Siemens has cornered the Market up here with all the engineers, there was a conversion frenzy for the past 10 years, New York State gave tax incentives and grants to buildings to upgrade there heating systems and ConEd gave fuel discounts if buildings stayed solid gas for 5 years, we intern became very busy installing new boilers, burners, new gas main services etc. but the issue was no one really new parallel positioning, I wasn’t there in the begging but was told it took a few days with the rep to start up the first burner, up until then 6 oil and Rotary burners were king in NYC, I have trained with what I say are the best mechanics I’ve came across 2 old school guys that stayed a head of the curve of technology very rare, I was fortunate to be trained by them, I was a residential heating tech for 10 years I knew nothing of commercial, but the rite training has brought me farther then I imagined, but I digress, parallel positioning is great being able to carry a 4-5% O2 threw the curve on either fuel, very hard to near impossible with single point positioning, someone who has studied and continues to learn about Combustion can appreciate that, I love to see videos like this and believe you guys are the only ones doing it, your videos are great, it sucks we only have a few jobs here with Auto Flame and Honeywell, I’m gathering in other parts of the country there’s more of that, keep up the great work it is appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your story of being in the field and the stuff you have learned. Hopefully our content continues to be of help to you and your career. The old guard of single point positioning has it's place but for high efficiency parallel positioning is the way to go. More and more it is becoming computerized which allows it to become more efficient. Thanks for watching!

Pretty scary to see all those linkage rods. We had a water tube Cleaver Brooks 300 horsepower Boiler that blew the side doors off do to a linkage braking off and causing the Boiler to over feed it with fuel and caboom! Now they all were upgraded with Servos to control the entire burner assembly. Those linkages will brake and u don’t want to be in the Boiler room when they do. I was in the control room when it happened...I’m just glad our fire tube was not the one that blew cause I would not be writing this comment should that boiler would have blown.

Very impressive. Good video. I had single point system/linkage. I call that Frankenstein's mechanism.:-) I have 2 Boilers, 400 hp and 500 hp low pressure.

Parallel Positioning is the way to go. No more slippage is the best selling point. The device knows exactly where it's at and it will continue to be true. If you'd ever like to talk about upgrading your boilers to servos please contact us! Also thank you for the comment! Glad you liked the video

Those linkage are truly scary. We had our 300 Hp water tube Boiler explode when of of these little linkages broke. It was upgraded with servos, thank God! Not like the Servos won't fail but it looks like a much safer design.

Servos are the way of the future. I think most boilers will be upgraded to servo motors as time goes on. Better efficiency and safer. Thanks for watching!

That's a good basic breakdown of it. Parallel system is a bunch of servos that are being controlled by a computer system. Thanks for the comment!
