Line Output Converter or Digital Signal Processor? Which one should YOU choose?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When you need to add aftermarket amplifiers to a car audio system you need a way to convert the factor "high level" signal to "low level" for rca connection you the new amplifier. This can be done with a "line output converter" (LOC for short) or a "digital signal processor" (dsp for short). What is the difference between these devices? What is best for you? Let's discuss!

    You do a great job explaining topics. I am trying to figure out a change for my upgraded 2014 F-150 Sony system. I upgraded the speakers then upgraded the head u to to Sync3 but lost ability to use the center dash speaker and surround sound. It seems upgrade wiped out my surround sound feature though I gained Apple car play. Now I’m thinking about replacing either the Sony/ford DSP or adding a LC.. This video helped me understand more about the differences.

It looks awesome simple clean and compact and sounds amazing. Just the 2 channel loc you would not think would make that much of a diffrence but they do! I had a standard whatever brand in my car and it worked just fine. Wasnt active or anything, I switched to the audio control and it was shocking the difrence it made. I currently have the LC2i installed just for a 12" sub in my 06 Lexus GS300. I tapped into the subwoofer channel of the oem amp to feed the signal to run this LC2i that goes into the 3k mono block amp. I just purchased 2 sets of components to replace what i have in the car now with a matching amplifier. My factory system has 4 6.5" mid-bass in the doors (rear doors have additional 1" tweeter each). dash has 1 3" center speaker, 2 2.5" or 3" full range and 2 1" tweeters. rear deck has 2 3" full range and used to have a 10" sub but i replaced that with a 12" in a proted box ( Thanks to CAF for the design of my ported enclosure!). what id like to know is what will i need to do to be able to add my 2 new sets of components (4 6.5" midrange/midbass and 4 1" tweeters) with amp to my system? i dont care about the other speakers in the car. Center and 3" full range will be removed . Also not really looking to go with the dsp. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. .... Forgot to mention that my new mids and highs amp has built in OEM line converters up to 9v.

I'd use the ADC at the head unit RCA and run a toslink cable to the DSP then RCAs from the DSP to the amp. Have slight static and whine that I have not been able to resolve after years of checking grounds, and replacing components along the way. I've tried every other remedy known to car audio except for powering the head unit directly off the battery.

    I recently installed new door speakers and tweeters in my 2021 Honda Ridgeline sport. They sounded weak so I added a kicker key200.4 with dsp built in. I set it up in biamp mode to set the front sound stage but it still didn’t sound very good. So know I have purchased the audio control LC7i to feed into my kicker key. I have yet to install it and am curious if you think it will make a very big difference? Also should I continue to run the kicker in biamp mode or do you think I should wire it as a true 4 channel amp with the tweets and front speakers running parallel plus the back door speakers? I’m hoping this gives me the best of both worlds with the LOC, auto DSP and amplifier built into the kicker key…. Thanks for your videos!!

    I currently have a Lc2 in a 2017 Chevy Impala. Running 0 gauge wire, 2- 2400 crank it up powering 1-5000sfb sundown; 1- massive 1900*4. 6-12in kicker cvx. 4 massive 6*9. 2 massive 6.5. 2 ds-18 tweeters. Ive replaced the Lc-2 about three times within the last two weeks. It plays fine then it starts causing my music to skip as if i had a scratched cd. And if i let it play it causes my radio to freeze. What’s the problem?

    So how would you use these devices in an 07 Mustang with a Shaker 1000? There are 2 6x8's and 2 8" 1.6 ohm DVC Subs in the doors, 2 6x8's in the rear deck and 2 10" 4ohm DVC Subs in the trunk. I've chosen a selection of speakers (whether they are right or not...). How could I use these devices to improve the audio without buying replacement amps? And which device would be best? It seems the DSP installed before the AMP's as there are two is the right choice.

    Question. I have been looking at Alpine's PXE-0850X DSP. I can't seem to find anything about bass roll off correction in their Manual. Does this Mean I need to have one of Audio Controls LOC's hooked up first? Also, I ready somewhere that you tune DSP's at a certain volume. Does that mean that you can't use the Volume control on the head unit anymore and have to get another volume control knob?

    I have 2 questions, I will be installing my LC7i here in a week or so once I figure out the wiring of my 16 outback w/ harmon kardon system. What will I run into when it comes to splicing my high, mids and lowes, but leaving them connected to the factory speakers? Any degradation to the stock speakers? Will I have level issues through the LOC? 2nd since there is only summing on the first channel, should I still connect to the sub channel for accubass even though the amp will not be getting the full range signal from the the LOC? Or can i splice in mids to the sub line to help with that? OK A 3RD! I noticed the LC7i RCA output voltage is rated higher than the input voltage for the RCA on my 1200.1 kicker amp. Is that an issue? I never knew that was a thing until I learned passive LOC have a low voltage which limits the amps ability to push a good signal to the sub which is why I started looking at active LOC's in the first place. I dont want to destroy my new amp. As much as I want to upgrade all the speakers, the budget is limited, so I went with the LC7i until I get further into the build and it's a great starting point for my 2016 outback with the harmon kardon amp I think. But as you can tell, it leaves me with worrying about the levels of the input since they are all set to the HK equalizer. I want the best sounding system I can have currently and that means getting my JL Tw5v2 to sound the best it can with this current configuration. Thanks!!

    How did you go installing the LC7i? Based on my experience with a 15 WRX STI with premium audio, you could probably just connect the unit in parallel with the midbass drivers for the purpose of adding your own sub since the head unit doesn't seem to high pass the door speakers. Actually I couldn't believe how bad the standard tune on the premium audio system is. Not even a way to control the sub level independently.

The twk is my dsp, the fix is more of a line out converter on steroids...together they make a harmonious union. The twk just picks up where the fix stops

    I added a Under Seat Amp to my Goldwing GL1800 and it doesn't sound as good as it should/could. When you increase the volume the Bass decreases so you don't really get any Bass out of the sub. Is this a situation where a DSP would benefit me better than a Line Output? I don't want/expect the sub to hammer but it almost sounds like the factory speakers on caffeine instead of a double shot of Expresso.

    Great information I recently upgraded my factory head unit to a Kenwood DMX7706S and swapped out my stock speakers with JL GX608C component speakers in the front door (6.5" speaker with tweeter and crossover) and Alpine S-S50 5.25" speakers in the rear doors (I know, they did not have JL 5.25" speakers so went with Alpine). I would like to add a 4 channel amp for the these speakers and a 8" or 10" sub-woofer with Mono amp down the line at some point and wonder if a DSP would be a good investment for this setup?

  • @andrewthetruth

    @andrewthetruth

    Alpine doesn't suck. You would benefit from a DSP vs. the head unit in sound quality, yes. Since you don't already have an amplifier, it would be cheaper to get an amp with the dsp built in. The JL vx700/5i is the best option because it will run everything you mentioned. It will serve as your mono amp, 4 channel, and DSP, all in one.
