I was wondering if you'd try out one of these.I bought the 60 in June and gigged with it a week later. The Android app helped a lot to dial in my sounds quickly, and store them in the presets. I don't like the gainier presets so I did mine in manual mode - just like I would with a tube amp. I thought needing to buy a USB cable to use the app was odd. They are inexpensive and Yamaha should have included one each for Android & iPhone. My local office supply store had what I needed.

@@euclidesanatolly6175 even the 60 has send/return jacks (the return can also be a preamp input, byoassing the internal preamp and FX) as well as XLRM out. This allows you to use the amp as a personal monitor, at any power setting.

I'll be honest. This seems 'phoned in'. It was overly rushed. You state you'll do each amp model, with and without boost, then don't. You really don't do much in the way of exploring ANY amp model in any depth, on camera.. And, not even a second spent on the App. Be honest this was a piss poor, facile review at best. Your comments and critiques are, honestly just paraphrasing (in result, not saying intent) of other reviews.

@@JonNewquist Great comment Jon. I Just picked up a few weeks ago, the katana 50 in white and I had to purchase a cable to hook it to my computer as well. I almost picked up this amp but I am glad that I picked up the Katana. I’m thinking I might actually have both when it’s over lol I love the boutique channel
As a gigging musician, I use the 60 watt on clean with no effects as a pedalplatform for rehearsal and on stage through the PA. Hardly use my tube amps anymore. It's light, silent, affordable and you can throw it around. It's perfect.
One of the better, if not the best, evaluation of this amp. Nice job explaining features at the beginning. And excellent job playing through different tones and effects.
I like how you keep all your reviews totally honest.. it’s quite refreshing & informative… thank you…
That clean tone was so beautiful.
I love my 60 watt version. The Line 6 app for Catalyst is a huge help for navigating tones as it doesn’t really show you that on the amp itself.
Catalyst looks like a really cool amp. Great to have more high quality options in that price range
Hi Darrell, great review, great explanation of the effects on offer in an all inclusive package. I loved your honest opinion for them to improve. Cheers ✌️🎸
I was surprised you didn't mention the ability to choose sounds and effects via you computer. I personally don't use a lot of effects so shaping my sound on the amp controls looks straight forward
I think it sells it short to refer to it as a "practice" or "entry level" amp. It does too much. You can gig with it, you can absolutely record with it. The App is way better and offers more options than using the panel. It's actually a little complicated at times, which doesn't say "entry" to me. Great video though, just my thought. I think you're right about what it does well and where it could be better.
This review of the amp reminds me of the Line 6 Flextone II. Much of the same setup in an amp build 20 years later.
I played through a Spider 4 for a few years and it was a 120w with 2x10s. I really liked the cleans I could get and the high gain overdrive was pretty good and served me well.

Very useful review. Thank you, DB.
It's a nice amp, Line 6's modelling is really good and they chose really well here with the 6 options you get.
This amp has good clean and boutique sounds, and works very well with the Helix and Pedals. I like the Katana, but I prefer the Catalyst for clean. I got one...
Ur vids have been killin lately D. Good work
I just tried the 60 watt version a couple days ago. I like it. Probably getting one soon.
Hey brother man, awesome video!!! Thanks a bunch for your time 🤘...I'm in terrible pain right now though because I've ordered one for myself and it's not here yet!!! 🤣...😐.. 😁✌️
It is worth mentioning that Line 6 is owned by Yamaha. The THR is just an awesome sounding amp. I am guessing that Line6 and Yamaha have shared some scientists to create this amp and the models. I do like my Spark amps, but the Yamaha THR allows the guitar to come through much better. The Catalyst seems to have similar qualities.

Maybe if he did it a while ago it was worth the ridicule. For a long time modelling was nowhere near the real thing in quality of sound, but these days that's all changed. The latest generation of modellers are amazing so sound quality and tone are no longer valid reasons for avoiding such things.

I'd argue the Vetta and Spider Valve amps were pretty badass. I owned 3 different DT amps, 2 DT25s and a DT50. Those amps are nothing short of stellar. Now, if OP's dad was gigging a Spider? So funny... I picked up the Catalyst 60 last month and I absolutely love it!
Generally speaking, seems like a nice amp for the price. One thing I distain is the persistent use of multi-function switches, vs simply including a separate switch for each function. Switches are cheap. I don’t want to have to “hold this button down for three seconds, then quickly tap this other button twice for this, three times for that or a long hold for this other deal. To store this setting press these three buttons at the exact same time; Note: all saved setting will be erased when you unplug the unit….” Call me a grumpy old man, but it doesn’t need to be that complicated. Keep it simple. Like I said, a panel of push buttons, for each delay type and effect, would be so much more user friendly. My $0.02.

One thing I think you missed out on when talking about the controls and how to set it all up was to actually connect with the app. I suspect they keep the controls mostly simple on board expecting that people will generally do most of the set up using the app and then just do the basic switching and things on the amp itself. Though it does look a bit annoying that it seems you have to actually plug your device into the USB to make it work. With the Helix they only have HX Edit for windows and MacOS, not phones or tablets, so USB connection makes sense. With these ones you can get the control app on your phone, would be nice for that to be able to connect wirelessly to the amp.
A lot of snobs peepee on line6 without realizing that it helps to bring a lot of people into the realm of guitar. Maybe it doesn't appeal to the ears of the elite but it has always been a fun amp for the up and coming.
@chriskettlewell801

For a long time that's all it was. These days it's different though. A lot of top guitarists around the world use modellers now, whether Line6 with Helix, or Fractal, Kemper or others. The quality of the current generation of modellers really can generate tones that you can't tell apart from quality tube amps if done right, and with many other advantages. For many years the tone out of modellers was pretty rubbish though. It's really only the latest generation with the Helix that I haven't felt like I had to seriously sacrifice tone for the convenience that they offer.
I have the line 6 v 240 and this amp is amazing and rocks so hard I could probably bust my windows out
Just ordered the 60w looking forward to receiving it..
This thing sounds damn good! I’m kinda shocked.
Great review. Thanks.
Got the 60w version as well, sounds great, love the ganymede reverb, but the UI on the cab as others have said is not great. But I play at my desk the amp is plugged into my PC and I control everything from the control app, and I've had a much nicer time with the amp and experimenting since I've been doing that.
Great review. Even being from a parent company I would like to see it against Yamaha THR.
I thought they would be a bit cheaper honestly. It's nice and somewhat simple but for around the same price you can get a spider v 60 with a digital screen and a crazy amount of settings. It's what I've been using for awhile. Haven't had a need for any other amp because the v60 is so versatile. Good video. Nice PRS. 👌

I've arranged to pick one of these up tomorrow on gumtree for 45 quid, i was just checking out some reviews to see what to expect. I wasn't really expecting positive reviews considering what i thought was a pretty low price. They asked for 55 but we ended up at 45, i'm the stereo typical Scotsman when it comes to handing over money lol. This review made the amp look pretty versatile, i hope it lives up to that. It's the 60 watt version but it's just for bedroom use so that's plenty for my requirements.
So I’m a 20plus year guitar player but it’s never been my primary focus. I’ve always been a drummer first. Well…Wife is pregnant and I’ve shifted way more into guitar. Bought this amp just over a month ago. The 100. I’ve had a 15 watt line 6 spider that I’ve used for recording for honestly like 10 years lol so i figured I’d have what I love plus more with the Catalyst. So I absolutely love it. Since I’ve taken a headfirst dive into guitar and tone I feel like I’m uncovering a whole new world of sound. I kind of wish I would have done a little more research because it does seem the true guitarists, like yourself, see flaws in the amp that I’m incapable of seeing at this point. But what I love about it is the following: for a novice, the tone is exactly what I want. I can get any tone I hear in my head with this thing. I write and record constantly so it’s nice to be able to get exactly what sound I want and be able to record it. I love the app. I have all the banks filled with my presets that I took the time to go through and tweak. With a few taps on my phone and a push of the foot switch I have the tone I want. It has more effects than I can use and the dirty tones you can get from all the channels are excellent for my style. I love the warmth and the little bit of brightness that it gives over my other amps. What I hate about it, and it sucks because it’s the main reason I bought it, is the recording direct xlr out is garbage. It is scratchy and sounds terrible when I hook it up so I’ve been forced to mic it. Which seems crazy to analog mic a digital signal lol but honestly it sounds great. I just wish I could dial that part of in to utilize it to its full recording potential. I think it’s worth noting that I run a sonic maximizer through the loop and honestly that thing makes any amp beef up a bit but the Catalyst does take very well to it. All in all I couldn’t be more satisfied. Loved your review of it! Wish I could get an in depth view of how you would use the amp and really see all its capable of since it’s gonna take me years to find out for myself! Thanks for awesome content as always!

I have one on the way, but I think I'm gonna forward it right back, I'm Into metal and bottom end, and the catalyst doesn't supply. It's a nice sounding amp for a low budget amp, but I don't think it's fit for the style of music I play, and not a deep low end sounding amp.
The software is very good to navigate. Should have mentioned all the features on the back (FX Loop), and the switch to use as a power amp for a HX Stomp or similar.
Man, that's a lot of delay. Is there a way to dial that down, or can you only adjust the delay time? The sounds are great, but I still love my Roland Cube 40XL.
Did you say how the recording was done? Was it direct or was the speaker mic'd up? I apologize if you said how and I missed it.
I'm a long time player with lots of great vintage and newer gigging equipment. While I love my tube gear, etc. I can't say enough good about this little Catalyst 60. For me, it's a great light grab-and-go amp for any type of situation .. just plugged straight in. I play mostly R&B/Funk/Blues-Rock stuff and I can get that "edge of breakup" sound and control things from the guitar vol like you should be able to do. Has 2 channels that you can customize and memorize. If you have one you REALLY need the footswitch. I can get a nice articulated funk tone and then a high gain Robben Ford tone on demand. For what it costs there is NO REASON not to have one in your stable. Any guitar I plug in sounds fantastic .. LP, Strat, Tele .. whatever. Forget the higher power versions .. this is plenty .. plus you can mike it, or, go DI if you want. Well done Line 6 .. Bravo!!

Darrell you reviewed the Zemaitis guitar a while ago. They acquired Greco guitars and have a line of guitars under Greco for $599 on sale but usually $899. Did you get a chance to try those out? If not you should do a review for it. I’d love to know how it compares to a Fender Tele player series for roughly the same price range. Especially because after looking Greco was part of that Zemaitis/Fender in Japan partnership and on Reverb the older ones go for $800+ still. Interested in the quality of them. Hope you have a good day!
Darrell did you play the shred in your intro music? I never hear you play fast so I was skeptical haha. Not that the non-shreddy stuff doesn't sound great! Thanks for the review
I noticed we didn't get a sound sample on the high gain setting! lol. I have this amp and I agree that the high gain setting is the weakest of the six. Very good amp. For a beginner it's a no brainer. I also have the similar Boss Katana. I'd give the Catalyst about 7 out of 10, and the Katana about 9 out of 10. The Katana sounds a little bit more organic to me, and it has the dedicated acoustic setting. But either amp will totally get the job done and give you hours of inspiring sounds.

Great video!
Got a 60 and I agree with most of your opinions. As far as low-medium gain sounds go, the Catalyst is unbeatable in its market. It’s got some great features that the Katana 50 doesn’t have (cab emulated XLR out and full effects loop), and it’s got about as much volume as a 15w tube combo. But geez, man, that UI is awful and if you use a footswitch, the delay between swapping “channels” is beyond unacceptable - the sound just cuts out entirely for about a half-second. So it’s effectively a one-channel amp and I use a multi-fx in the loop because the UI is pathetic. Also, the high gain model has some weirdness in the decay of the distortion - like it cleans up and sounds very thin if you play a high note while a low note is sustaining behind it. Surprised Line 6 didn’t get the high-gain tone right. They came so close to making this the absolute dominant option in this market, but they really screwed up some basics. If they incorporated a tiny, simple LCD like the Fender Mustang LT amps and revamped the UI and fixed the channel switching gap, the 60 wouldn’t have any competition south of a thousand bucks. But as it is now… man. You really gotta weigh the negatives. Which is hard, because tone-wise it really is all that and a bag of chips.

Can confirm that all the amp models and effects come from Helix/HX architecture. While the amp models are not direct copies of existing amps (i.e. Twin, AC30, etc), they are definitely inspired by those, but using HX tech Line 6 were able to add their own sauce to them to give them a bit of uniqueness.
I have a pod go that uses the helix sounds and line 6 is doing pretty cool things. I have a 100wat katana so really no need to get this but I'm sure it sounds good

NOT bad! Great cleans, crunch was ok too! I know with these TYPES of amp, the high gains NEVER come across very convincingly! But a good CLEAN pedal platform for sure!
It’s a decent little modelling amp. It sounds ok. I do have some constructive feedback: the indicator light to show your voicing could be much more clear. No compressor? Seems like a big omission for someone that might want a lead tone.
I have the 60 and pruchased the footswitch seperately. Disappointed that there's so much latency when changing channels. Otherwise it's a good sounding amp for the price.
Can you save settings you created for recall and, if so, how many?
yes sir here in the first 5 mins of the upload
Is there a foot switch board like the Spyder Jam amps?
Yes, usually I'm an analog guy, but I would lie if I would not admit that I almost choked as I heard Zhe crystal clear, brilliant and beautiful clean and boutique sound. I have the catalyst 100 now. And hey 🤷 if it's the sound you want? Who cares if it's digital? Even though I'm a very sentimental vintage fellow ☺️🙃 love that darn tbing
Nice review. The Catalysts are an attractive package and sound good. I understand why Line 6 decided to limit options on this design just really wish they hadn’t dropped the effects choices down to just a single effect + reverb. If you want, say, the popular combination of 2 effects such as any modulation and delay ….I guess you’re bringing pedals. Also wish the 2x12 combo was a stereo configuration…or that a stereo config was available at a higher price point.Stereo is an awesome sound. Some Helix users are plugging into Catalysts as a live monitoring solution. More would do so if stereo was available.
It’s sounds very great and for someone that wants a not to expensive amp this is what I would buy if I didn’t start on a really good amp

The reviews of this amp are very diverse. Many bad reviews out there.@@Sunny-yg2pq
Do you have to use Line 6 products only this amp?
I really like my Katana 50 as my bedroom amp, but this one does sound a lot better. I can't tell though if it's the amp, or your playing. 😞
Hey Darrell can you review the Gretsch junior jet club streamliner's review
This thing has my attention but I have the Katana Artist mkii. How do you think it compares? I do love the Artist but the cleans are not exactly my style. This Catalyst has great clean tones it sounds like.

Do I have to press the button to change banks or is there a foot switch?
I be getting serious buzzing out of my amp even clean channel, forget when I want to used distortion , any ideal what I can do to cut that buzzing
How well does this take pedals especially fuzz
Should of talked about the Ins and Outs. Effects Loop, Direct out, XLR Out, Foot Switch, USB...
