I was the video recording engineer for this concert at the Atlanta Civic Center in 1977. After the show, Linda and her band knocked on the door (!) of my little tape truck and asked if they could watch the tape, so they and I sat together and watched the show. Linda is so unassuming and such a beautiful person. I remember talking to Don Grolnick, the piano player, who played the show with a broken hand. It was a great show, and a great memory for me, but I never thought this recording would live on 40+ years later.

If I had to name the single most memorable note I've ever heard in any pop song, it would be the final note that Linda Ronstadt hits in "Blue Bayou." To this day, I can still recall my reaction to hearing it for the first time. The 4th, 3rd and 2nd notes from the end, slowly moving up the musical scale, create a huge expectation in the listener for what the final note would be. And then? Wow! Ronstadt delivers and sustains an F#5 in magnificent vocal tone! Bravo!

When Orbison releases this song in 1963 I was 16 years old and did not think anyone could do it justice except Roy, and I will always be partial to his recording. But Linda Ronstadt made a lier out of me with her recording in 1977.

I agree with your opinion and sentiments. One technicality though... you might want to check the definition of grace. It's IMPOSSIBLE to deserve grace. Grace is unmerited favor bestowed. In my view, no one could touch Linda in her day, and no one can now. Of course there are other great female vocalists who can belt out a power ballad (Christina, Whitney, Mariah etc.) but Linda had something special, something the others lack: Restraint. She could raise the power level when melody demanded, but could convey emotion quietly when volume wasn't called for. Her voice was always controlled, but beautiful to listen to. She was, and always will be, one of the greats. And in her humbleness and honesty, a star.

I totally agree! Her voice is so pure and her range outstanding!
Out of all the top notch female vocalists, both past and present, I can't think of anyone who had/has the ability to inject emotion into her singing to the extent that Linda Ronstadt did, She's simply superb!

@@ApocGuyOh pleeze Carpenter was a grotesque, sour note, thin voiced square who sang schlocky love songs with her creepy brother. Couldn't perform live. Not in RONSTADT's vocal universe- in fact such a comparison is a bit of a slur.

Even if she were a one-hit-wonder with this song, it would've been enough to immortalize her in the minds of anyone who heard or saw this performance. Although I read somewhere that Ms. Ronstadt identifies herself as a "spiritual atheist," if I ever sat on a tribunal to prove the existence of God, I would submit this video as primary evidence!
Incredible command of her voice. Not many singers can deliver live as consistently as Linda did.
WOW what a powerful voice!!She was amazing.
I read somewhere that when Roy Orbinson heard this rendition of his song it reduced him to tears!

Ladies and Gentleman, this is how a singer performa song. No auto-tune or other crap. Just use your voice and you'll see the audience go crazy. Her talent made her great and her humble personality stole peoples hearts. She still with us but unfortunately we can't hear that voice again. WE LOVE YOU LINDA!

Well holy fuckin shit now this is what you call real music.
This beautiful young lady sang those incredible songs from the 70s, later 0peratta, wonderful songs from her heritage then did that album of classic old standards etc... who the Hell can do that nowadays? My all-time fave is her on Johnny Carson back in the 80s singing "When You Wish Upon a Star" while sitting on a huge slightly swaying half moon!.. Thank you, Linda...
Singers way back was so excellent. No dramas on stage, no dancers or any props, just their pure voice. Today... well..... never mind.

That is exactly why I don't have much love with the female singers today like Taylor, Arianna, Christina etc. It's all about the distractions with all the dancers, lights, flashes and pyrotechnics. Lady Linda didn't need any of that. Just stand there, let the music move you and sing your heart out. Pure joy.

This was my mom’s song!!! She would sing it in every Karaoke session. Naturally - I learned it thoroughly from watching her and she would even let me sing some lines at karaoke too. When she passed away - I thought I’d be able to sing it without any problems at all… boy I was soo wrong… after the first few lines, my tears won’t stop falling… I couldn’t even make it to the chorus and had to excuse myself from everyone in the karaoke session we were having coz I was already crying and sobbing…. I remembered the heartbreak trying to sing this song again after my mom died… BUT - it’s been been more than a decade now and i’m able to sing it again - tears still fall from time to time and I can still feel my heart ache longing for my mom - but then I always just try and think “ah will she like it? I hope she does”. I always dedicate it to her memory every time I sing it. I love you and I miss you mom!!! 💜🕊️
It still gives me chills to hear it even after all these years
