What's the secret to unlocking the creativity hidden inside your daily work, and giving every great idea a chance? Harvard professor Linda Hill, co-author of "Collective Genius," has studied some of the world's most creative companies to come up with a set of tools and tactics to keep great ideas flowing - from everyone in the company, not just the designated "creatives."

Great on leadership. Blinkered, as most people who say they are talking about innovation these days are, about the difference between how we get to the inception of a paradigm shift (and this definition from Kurzweil puts the lie to the fallacy of “incremental innovation”), which is often the work of one or two people, and the team effort almost always required to execute, improve and capitalize on it.

I hold a BFA in media business producing, but I think I'm only starting to really understand the definition of "collaborative creativity" after listening to this talk. Of course, industry experience and observation is a big pre-requisition to start understanding this topic. But no matter where we stand in life, better social architecture is so very important.

creative abrasion: about heated & constructive arguments. amplify conflicts, don’t take them (diversity + conflict) agility; refining. act your way to the future, not olán design thinking (science experiments + artistic process) resolution: decision making to combine opposable view points they don’t compromise. and tbh y don’t let one group hold the power. “and” decisions not either/or

The title of this talk gave me high expectations. Unfortunately, after watching the entire 17' 20" of this talk, I feel none the wiser. I do not doubt Hill's professionalism, but in terms of making your idea understandable, there is still some room for improvement here.

***** : The central idea suggested by Linda is to let things take its course and ensure every voice is heared and that leadership is not about compromise of one idea in favor of the other. A leader should not be bossy.

One hazard to this is egocentric high-ego people, who always want to point out they had this one or that other idea, so they want to feel the best themselves rather than the best team as a whole... I could think of hundreds of people this way but I don't want to grind my teeth. Those who always want their name on top.

Innovation is collective? What about Einstein? No paradox. Personal innovation can be identified as 'discrete', but if there is a collective purpose, then the innovation is ultimately identified as a 'collective' success, or 'innovation'.

  • @jonacacarr3839

agree, Einstein was NOT an example of collective innovation. Even though the example was inconsistent, her point about the need for a collective when innovating is still valid, except when it's not

  • @AndrewSheldon

Jonathan Carr No, I disagree because I think its not a 'collective consciousness', but simply a group of individuals organised as a group. No paradox. I think that's an important distinction. Too many heads spoil the broth? Its too many resources dedicated to a single problem. i.e. autocratic leader, unorganised? An organisation is a group of 'distinct' tasks that may or not be identified by the company. Why? Because their 'reward' or validation is 'social'; its a product or service. that's why there is this dubious notion of 'collectivism', when in fact is a single product requiring some notion of collective attribution, but really its not.

That's not what she meant. She meant from the moment Pixar starting making animated movies, it took 20 years for them to create the(ir) first FULL-LENGTH animated movie.

  • @milenumilena

Phil Barry : 1. Google introduced KZread in their search engine, to do that they have to have storage space and design to fit the needs of consumers. Even after they bought it, they have to make program design and increase their storage to integrate KZread into their existing algorithm 2. Is the company dead(Toy Story)? Even if we assumed it was dead in 1975, isn't there information to be studied on how their leadership was? Can't the persons who worked there be interviewed to find about the company? Basing on judgement without further look into the matter is not good. Besides, did you learn anything, or are you here to investigate people?

She is basically describing Agile Design in a bunch of different words. Most everyone does this. But most people who think they are innovative, really are not. A design strategy isn't going to save those people - no matter how closely they try to follow the model. Inevitably, we will a whole bunch of people who "think" they're creative and who are simultaneously argumentative enough to argue for their "creativity" - in turn producing some of the greatest (and most expensive) excrement in film history. I think it's great that this woman has decided to make a commercial for Pixar. I like the company. But the idea that Pixar has somehow cornered the market on Agile Design or what makes creativity is just more of the insipid theory that square people can be put into round holes. She hasn't demonstrated any facts. Just wishful thinking.
