In the 1980's, I was a living a totally secular life as a child growing up in a socialist country where religion had been declared illegal. The Skulener Rebbe opened a secret חדר in 1988 for the surviors and the children who didnt even know they were Jewish. After his shluchim searched high and low, they found me and my sister and my mom OBM agreed to send us to the school. It was about Chanuka time and we didnt know anything about it or anything at all about being a Jew. They played this show for us, even though it was in english and I didnt understand the dialog, it changed my life forever. And reignited my lost Jewish soul. And still brings me to tears about what might have been, and how the Almighty can turn things around in an instant, when it all seems hopeless and lost. עם ישראל חי

I am not Jewish but this cartoon was a significant experience in my childhood growing up in the 80's in NYC. It came on Channel 11 WPIX usually once a year and I watched it every time. I will share this cartoon with my children, so they can appreciate it and hopefully learn something in the process. שָׁלוֹם

As a Jewish, Israeli Citizen living in The United States, Chanukah is an Important Holiday for me, from Memories from my own Childhood & Memories from My Children's Childhoods, as well as The Memories of what Hashem did in ancient times for Our People, The Mighty Miracles that He performed at this time of year. Somehow, We had acquired this little Animation on VHS along with a couple other Chanukah Videos on VHS Tape, & from about a week before The First Light Of Chanukah through The Eight Days, my kids only wanted to watch these videos on The VCR in Our Living Room, it was played over & over & over again. We, My (now,) Late-Wife & I had to go to The Den or Our Bedroom to Watch Anything else on Television. LOL Nevertheless, We were delighted that our Children were embracing Our History, Our Culture & Our Religion. With everything that is directed to "Santa Claus" & The Other Holiday that is Celebrated during this time of year. This, & The Other Chanukah Videos that We Had, kept Our Children's Focus on These Historic, Miraculous Events that occurred in Our Homeland. As long as they were focused on This & Other Things Associated With Our Holiday, The Less They Were Bombarded by The Images on Television, & Everywhere Else, Associated with "Santa Claus!" We gave our Children Gifts on Each Of The Eight Lights Of Chanukah. Beginning with The Smaller, Less Exciting Gifts On The Early Lights & Becoming Bigger Each Night. On The Eighth Night, They Received The Gift That They Asked For, The Big Gift. To make it interesting, We hid all of Their Gifts Around The House, Wrapped In Chanukah Gift Wrapping with Each Child's Name On It. If They found someone else's Present, They Couldn't Say Anything & Had To Put It Back or Re-Hide It In Another Place. But We had The Kindling Of "The Chanukiah," (Menorah,) & The Telling Of The Miracles Of The Chanukah Story, The Chanukah Blessings & Eating Dinner came first, & Then The Gift Hunt. Although, this was long ago, & my Kids are all grown & Middle-Aged, this year, 5784, (2023,) Two Of My Kids, a Daughter & a Son, who chose to Serve Military Time in The IDF, & chose to Remain In The Reserves, are spending this Holiday in Israel fighting for The Peace, Safety & Security of Our Promised Land. If I wasn't over 55, I'd be there Voluntarily Doing Whatever I could to Assist In Our Mission To Rid The World Of These Terrorists! What We Are Seeing In Our A Miraculous, G-d-Lead Successful War Against Evil As Israel Is Spending This Chanukah Season Doing What We Are Chosen To Do,,,We're Removing Wickedness From The Face Of The Earth. Happy Chanukah To All!

While I've always loved the Hanukkah story as a tale of light and hope -- particularly this rendition because of the fabulous cast -- there is one slight inaccuracy in the sense that it was the rogue general who went to trash the temple out of spite because Alexander the Great (AG) was considered too eccentric in the pursuit of his cultural interests, which led to a lot of nasty troubles among the generals who remained in the region. Disgruntled generals wanted to go home but were assigned to be "Ambassadors" rather than going home, which caused substantial derision and resentment among the generals/ambassadors. The desecration of the temple was their own action in defiance of their sovereign's instructions to remain far from home. Yes, it's true that assimilation was expected, but it was meant to be two-way scholarly exchange rather than the horrible outcomes caused by weak generals. At any rate, in solidarity our team continues to celebrate this time of light an hope with our brothers and sisters of the Jewish faith. May we all work together to find the path towards peace; may the path shine brightly before us all as we seek peaceful unity and understanding.

Amen, the light represents God’s culture and his instructions on how his people should live. The Greeks tried to stamp the Hebrew people light out by getting them to conform to their ways and ideologies and the Israelites pushed back against the pagan ways of the geeks, Judah Maccabees and other (Israelites) took a stand. The Greeks had destroyed the temple of Yah ( God) but the menorah was left standing. The lisraelites rebuilt the temple and rededicated it to God. The Holy Spirt or Ruach HaKodesh was present. ❤️❤️❤️ This cartoon is metaphorical about the story of Chanukah 🕎 and the Feast of Dedication also called the Festival of Lights.

I like the symbolism in this special. The lights represents God's Word and The Gold Greek symbols I think present Greek Idols. In Actual History, The Greek King at the time banned Torah Reading and force the Jews to worship Greek Idols. So the Poor Jews have to do their Torah Studies in secret. Thankfully, The Maccabees were able to remove the Greeks from Israel and rededicate God's Temple. That Last Light presents the spare jar of oil that was used to light the Menorah. Which by Miracle, Last 8 nights. Even though, It didn't show the full, correct history here. It's not a bad Hanukkah Special. Happy (LATE) Hanukkah from a simple Christian Family! :)

@Ana Martinez The letters are hebrew letters in which The Creator used to create the world The symbol of the seven candles is for the seven days of the week on the seven day HE completed HIS work. The symbol of "light" is knowledge of HIS instructions so the people that doesnt have knowledge of HIS instructions are in "darkness" bc in the dark you cant see but in the ""light" you can the same symbol to night vs day. go to "torahanytime" if you are interested in learning.

I daresay this video has been seen and loved by millions more people than anything Chabad has ever produced -- it was **ON TV** when I was young. I don't think you understand the impact of that -- this was the very first time there was anything other than Christmas specials on TV.
