LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! - Wiring LS Swap HEADLAMPS Through Donor Fuse Box - UTX

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today at Ugly Truck, we're wiring up the headlights on this 1986 C10 6.0 LS swap to run through the OEM donor fuse panel. With the help of our trusty whiteboard, Jerry explains how the original 86 C10 circuit works, how the LS donor circuit works, and how we tie the two together. Since we no longer have the BCM, we use a couple of relays to trigger the new circuits. It's a more efficient way to run the lights, and we shaved off several amps running into the cab of this truck.

I bet at 4 amps, the switches will take less of a beating and last longer then the years they already do. Now you could consider the switches heavy duty now lol. I would like to see the horn as well. Thank you gor the content and invaluable info. And the fun as well.

On my original K10 I put a lmc headlight relay harness. No more constantly replacing headlight and dimmer switches! It is terrible how the factory system worked. Wait for it "BUTT"😂 Connector

🤣 Those headlight switches aren't the easiest thing to replace on those trucks either! Definitely worth a couple relays and some time to make it work this way. Thanks Bill!

Great video as always. Why do you need the first set of relays ? Couldn't you just run your signal wire to the relays in the fuse box ? In other words disconnect the battery power to relay contact #85 and run the dimmer switch legs directly to the #85 contact on the relays and C1 B9 & D3 are directly grounded activating one or the other relays. That would eliminate the extra set of 4 contact external relays, IMHO they just seem to be redundant or do you need them for isolation/protection ?

Hello Ken. Great question. Pin 85 and 30 on both of the original relays in the donor box are fed power at all times from that box. There is just no access to those pins. I wish there was a way to do that and I am sure somebody could tear the box apart and finagle something but I would rather keep with a fuse box that can be replaced easily if needed. The next one I do, I am going to use the dimmer and the switch and just use them as the ground source which will fix that extra relay problem. I will also be incorporating the BCM on it which is why I didn't do that on this one. Thanks again. We always love your comments. Jerry and Emily

I decided to try and get my BCM working with a stock interior harness. Hoping to get the headlights to come on automatically, using the light sensor on the dash. May just hook up all of the interior switches to that harness.

Problems I’m running thru my head…. Where to place the headlight switch; lux sensor, turn signal switch (maybe swap out steering column); instrument cluster; window motor operations, etc. I have the PCM and BCM from an ‘04 along with the interior harness, as well as the under hood fuse box. So, interior (BCM) to fuse box, sorted. Still looking for a drop in 5.3/6.0 with harness. Maybe this will just be too much work! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! BTW…. How are you mounting the PCM?

No, I don't have a fix for that. I just put a rebuilt one on my 74 and it actually isn't to bad. Make sure it has a great power supply and good ground is the best you can do. It is a real problem though with some of them. Thanks Frank. Jerry

Im wondering if you could do this without the extra relays? Could you connect the dimmer switch hi out put to pin 85 on the LS high beam relay and then 86 directly to ground. And then do the same for the low beam switch output to the low beam relay. The only thing stopping this would be if pin 85 is connected to a 12 volt bus bar or the 85 and 30 feeds are tied together. Love the channel!

Hello Alan. Yes, the relays power supply is tied into that donor fuse box and the only way to fire up the relay is to give them a source to ground. On the 2002 and earlier we are able to do without the relays. When you get into gen 4 stuff we have to use the body control module to ground the headlamp relays. We will be having some crazy headlamp wiring going on this year. Thank you for watching. We really appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
