This showed me that the silver lined modifiers actually loose some contrast and saturation. I've always liked how they increase texture though compared to softer modifier which almost look blurry to me. Thanks for an eye-opening video.

Great tutorial Jay. I can stop making numerous purchases to find the best light modifier. They seem to be similar and not that much different. I did like the 72'' white umbrella best.

You like it best because its the softest cause of size. but when you have more light source maybe you need to look into a something else.

Great demo. Over the years I used a verity of light modifiers. I used a Larson 4 by 6 in studio for my main. Love the soft look of it. I retired in 2011. Now there are so many choices available out there and choices of lights.

The Slanted Lens going to be 75 in October had knee problems and after 35 years I was ready. I still keep up with photography and take pictures and video for personal use. Oh and i am female but with no picture and with my name people assume I am a guy. Lol.

Please may I ask: I know the size and shape of a modifier changes where it is placed in relationship to the subject but does the colour of lining also change its placement? For example would you place a white lined soft box closer to the subject than a silver line? I don’t mean for this experiment, I know you measure so they were in the same place, but in general use. If so, whether I’m after softer or harder light should be taken into consideration, as well as how specular I want it, when choosing the colour of a modifier's lining. A fascinating and very informative video, thank you very much for making it and It is saved to my "Slanted Lens Playlist" as I’m sure I will refer back to it with future purchases.

Hi Jay. About the light metering... in the prep part of the video i saw you take measurements from the stand 1:43 and also handheld near her head 1:52. From the rest of the video it seams you went with measuring from the stand. Why so far away from her face/head? Any compensation in camera to bring down the exposure on the face, since it is closer to the light source?

A great video Jay! I have some headshots coming up and I found this refreshing to see. Love the larger light modifiers. That beautiful soft wrap around light!

Thanks Jay. I did some headshots of my students today using a white background, and silver umbrella, a reflector (to fill under the chin), and a speedlite for lighting the backdrop. I shot these with my Canon 100 2.8 macro. The details were amazing! I had to lift the shadows a bit in Capture One, and white balance the shots, but that was it. Take care.

What are you using to light this video? I have led light panels and trying to figure out what to use with them. I was thinking for ease of use just shoot-through umbrellas. I really like the soft light from them. Also have a yongnuo yn216 that I want to find a large modifier to use it with.

This was really great for perspective...... Much appreciated.....

They do start to look similar indeed, especially large soft light sources (octodomes and umbrellas). My question is, when and why would you feather softbox/octobox?

The shoot through umbrella, surprisingly seems to be giving more light to the camera right cheek than all others; i.e. wrap around light. Also the skin tones are warmer/at least more natural looking to me (no need to bother with a gel). The silver lined one gives too much (silver) light on the forehead and cheek. I'm surprised as I thought the silver lined umbrella would wrap more light on camera right. So two points: a) the shoot through umbrella is designed to be used at closer distance to the subject compared with the silver back which due to its design has to be further back and b) there are diffusers one can hang on the inside of the silver umbrella (i.e. at its wider part) just before the light gets out. So what I'm pointing out is that the positioning and diffusing could have been responsible for very different results. Also would the 72" be an overkill for a single speedlite flash? Does it have the power to light up such a large umbrella? Also 72" seem an overkill for a portrait; seems more suited to a half body shot. At any rate is there an equivalent of the 7inch reflector you mount on the light for flash? My flash can 'zoom in'; e.g. from 24mm to 105mm so do I still need something like a 7 inch reflector to focus the light or just zoom in? I'm looking for a portable solution to photographing families or in general a group of 3-4 persons max. So is 4 feet still a good distance and is a 72'' umbrella still good for 3-4 people (densely packed ;-)? For the record the Mola is too much shiny/light patch on the cheek - not diffused sufficiently.

I just started using strobes and this video is just perfect for me to understand the differences between all of this Light Modifiers! A big thank you for the explanations (^_^)

Following most of your stuff. Easy for you to say. The more I learn the less I want to use. And half the time I don't know what modifier I want to use till I am half-way into the shoot, and then get too lazy to want to change over (do you get the feeling I do not start well prepared?). What is nice is that in many cases there is little difference from one mod to another, which justifies my occasionally getting stuck on just using one particular mod, shoot after shoot after shoot. Also was pro now hobbyist, so rarely have a fixed agenda. Good info presented in an entertaining way.

I think the 72 white umbrella is what I need. I can use it for outdoor shoot as well without the need of a strobe when the sun is really harsh

Great comparison, I find any of the silver backed modifiers tend to reduce colour saturation slightly whilst adding contrast compared to white backed modifiers. The differences however are quite subtle but when it comes to modifiers you can often emulate the look of several just by the way you use it. You don't need to purchase 20 different shape/size softboxes or reflectors for example 😃

This was a great comparison. I've seen softbox vs. umbrella ... comparisons before, but the size, lining and shape difference is new to me. Personally, since I first had the chance to test out harder (beauty dish) and softer (softbox) lights in my school's studio, my style of portraits would incorporate both. I like have that hard highlight from the smaller and more direct beauty dish and the soft light of the softbox. It's a bit disappointing that I can't enter the contest, as I'm currently travelling. I hope to enter the next one once I'm back in the US!

The white umbrella was the best

It would be nice for pretty much everyone outside the US if the measurements for the modifiers were also given in metric. Like the concept, but paused frequently on a modifier that interested me tp do the conversion.

Thanks for this. What I find confusing is that the light was being moved back and forth and I wasn't sure if you were changing the power of it or changing your F-Stop or shutter speed to maintain the same exposure, for an apples to apples comparison. I would think the inverse square law would come into play when moving the source as much as you were at that range. Also ...without a final downloadable image with all of the shots included and labelled (like a proof or contact sheet) ...hard to say know the they compared to each other without going back to the beginning or trying to find comparisons part way through ...etc. Interesting to watch, Jay, but challenging to draw conclusions, at least for me.

Thanks for using an umbrella reflector and mentioning why you use it. I'm so tired of hearing or reading over and over again that "umbrellas lack control" in videos or articles, and then notice that no attempt whatsoever was done to eliminate bare flash tube spill before reaching that factually wrong conclusion.

I'm glad I could help! I actually really loved the look of the 72" white umbrella, so I'm glad that that bit helped you out!

There's a huge difference in the white balance (color temperature of the light) between the white lined modifiers and the silver lined ones. The white lined are significantly warmer in tone to the silver lined softboxes. Look at the comparison again. Same thing with white reflective umbrellas and silver ones. The white ones are always warmer. And just as an aside, shoot through umbrellas are warmer than reflective umbrellas as well.

nice comparisons, but you missed one thing: the silver is a lot cooler light, the White is a warm tone, better on the skin of the model, than the silver, but does depend on what you are photographing, a portrait, or a product; reflective or matt finish.

Very true. Just depends on the look you want.

putting all 4ft from the subject in my mind is wrong as this is not how you would use them. large softboxes round or square are used close up not 4ft away.....

The Mola was easily putting out the best quality of light of all those modifiers. That's probably why Mola cost so much moola. the skin tones were more vibrant, better highlights, and just enough contrast to keep the light from being flat and boring. Next nicest was the 36" parabolic from dynalight and lastly the 72" shoot through. But definitely the Mola was the standout.

Are you 100% sure you were using a Mola Demi (22") Beauty Dish? The angles on it don't look the same as mine. In fact, I think what you were actually using a Speedotron 22" Beauty Dish.
