Lifting Weights STUNTS Growth (THE TRUTH!!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have you been told that lifting weights will stunt your growth if you start at too early of an age? In this video, I’m going to dig into the science of workout stress and see what impact it plays on developing bones and ultimately the height of the person lifting the weights. Is there a real cause for concern or is this something that can be almost completely ignored when it comes to your exercise plans.

Many pediatricians and parents have either been told, or told someone themselves, that lifting weights before puberty is a bad thing due to the potential damage it can place on the long bones of the body and the growth plates. When these growth plates are affected negatively, the continued growth of these bones is stunted and height increases halt.
This needs some investigation. Mostly, this needs to be looked at more because of how perpetuated this advice is. That said, we have to see where this even originated. Most of these concerns come from the correlations that are made between many of the highest profile Olympic and Power lifters that are extremely short in stature. The same can be said for muscular gymnasts who are also very small in height.
But before any conclusions can be jumped to you have to ask yourself the age old chicken and the egg question. That is, are these people short because of their participation in lifting weight at an early age that potentially led to damage to their growth plates or are they competing at the highest level of their sport because inadvertently being short was something that contributed to them being the best at what they do.
I will tell you one hundred percent it is the latter. When you are shorter, the mechanical leverages are improved significantly on lifts like the bench press and squat that allow you to be relatively much stronger than someone with longer limbs. Not only that, the distance the bar has to travel in space are minimized greatly compared to someone who is significantly taller. The combination of these two things makes it easier for someone shorter to excel and therefore rise to the level of public prominence that is going to skew the perception of weightlifting causing it’s practicioners to be short.
The truth is the growth plates at the ends of the tibia, femur and humerus are not going to be impacted by the forces present in normal, controlled weightlifting. In no way does the squat, bench press or deadlift for example provide the type of forces and stresses to the bones that leads to growth plate injuries. These are almost always incurred by asymmetrical distorted forces to the bones that comes from falls or accidents on skateboards, snowboarding or even contact sports like football and basketball.
In fact, weightlifting provides benefits to developing adolescents who will get stronger bones and joints from learning the proper way to move a bar at an early age and start adding to that over time. The best thing a young adolescent can do is learn the basic movement patterns and then be ready to take advantage of the hormonal benefits that come when they reach puberty.

    Jeff I was told this as a kid and got asked this queation myself all the time as a doctor. Just earlier this week I bought the "Load to Explode" baseball program you co-authored years ago. I bought it for my school age son to help his hitting and thought the hitting drills would be all I could use with him for now (he's 8). I was shying away from the resistance training portions, but after this I may try some of the weighted exercises with him with 1 lb dumbells. He actually wants to try lifting weights because he sees me doing it so maybe I'll give it a shot. He's already tried exercises with bands and tubing and likes them. Thanks Jeff!

  • @appelster11
    @appelster115 жыл бұрын

    @Athlean-X Two things that I slightly disagree with in a scientific context. (warning: small thesis ahead) 1. There certainly is some degree of compression stress in a lot of lifts (example 5 of your 'injuries list') and while this may mot directly cause injury when lifting responsably it could be risky to let young adolescents (10-13 years old) lift heavy (which you mentioned), but besides not using too heavy loads at that age, lifting too often (for example daily training sessions) with inadequate recovery can indeed cause compression issues in the long term. I am aware that you preach this in many of your other videos (love your channel) but I think it is an important part of the debate in this problem that could have been addressed in this video as well. It also leads to my second point. 2. Frequent high intensity training at a young age can indeed stunt growth, regardless of which sport is being practiced, due to the body experiencing stress conditions while training. However, scientific studies have shown that the body will 'catch up on the delayed growth potential' once the stress conditions disappear for a time, which once again circles back to adequate recovery time. This is however an extreme situation which in practice is only seen in adolescents that sport on an elite level (for example potential Olympic gymnasts) who train well over 15 hours a week. Once again, I love your channel and I think that you make great content, but I recently did a research project for my study (human and animal health biology at Wageningen University) in relation to optimal training an nutrition for elite adolescent swimmers, and these two things stood out to me as incomplete. If anyone is curious about my sources, just reply and I'll try to find them back asap and put them up in a reaction. Bonus addition: to a very small degree, lifting weights during adolescence can actually benefit growth as well, if done properly, due to the extra growth hormone produced to build up the muscles. This is however a very minute advantage.

    My mom was 5'1 and my dad was 5'6. I'm 6'2 both family sides were fairly short. But I think that because both my parents families had lived through tough times with hardly any food to eat it stunted their growth. I was fed very well, I achieved full height by the time I was 14 years old and the other kids always wondered why I looked jacked for my age even though I never worked out technically. I had hard jobs with lots of hard labour and exercised often enough (biking, basketball etc.) which probably contributed to it. I think what stunts a persons growth other than outside factors like defects or injury would be a lack of eating and physical stimulation. If you don't eat enough it spends most of that trying to keep itself alive rather than building anything and if you eat just enough to sustain your current activities as a child you won't really grow much. Of course genetics will have a huge effect on your overall structure but usually you have to have some sort of deficiency or defect to really get a noticeable difference. At least in my experiences the smaller people that think they eat a lot really don't at all but are convinced they are eating a lot but in fact are eating like a bird.

    You’re describing Salter-Harris fractures. They can hinder the growth plates (essentially by scarring the area which stops those cells from responding the the same stimuli to grow). But those fractures typically don’t cause as much problem as people once thought. I’m a dual board certified physician (Internal Med and Pediatrics) and I have 4 kids. I’ve paid attention to research regarding growth “stunting” and growth stimulation. Bottom line is as long as the resistance training you’re child (or you) are doing is done safely (so as to prevent injury) then there is no risk to stunting growth. But there is also no added height by resistance training. Your end adult height is mostly determined by genetic factors (assuming there are no serious environmental factors like nutrient deficiencies - rickets etc.) But the benefit of resistance training at a young age are tremendous. Stimulating muscle growth at a young age helps to support body weight and prevent long term pain and injury down the road. And most importantly- keeping kids lean prevents diabetes type 2, hypertension, sleep apnea, coronary artery disease, and on and on. When an adult gets fat their fat cells swell up (adipose tissue). When kids get fat they gain MORE fat cells (more adipose cells) which makes the potential for obesity unbelievably higher than a previously lean adult who gets fat. So... from a doctor and father I’m telling you to get your kids exercising. Let them see you work out. Let them hear you grunt. And make that normal to them. That way they will grow up with exercise as a norm. Just my 2 cents

    To the 8 yo: if you wanna get big as an adult, do sprinting, anaerobic training and other intense activities. You’re at the age when you can activate the ACTN-3 gene for speed and strength which developes fast twitch muscle fibres needed for muscle growth. You may not grow now, but you increase your potential in muscle growth and athleticism after you hit puberty. And also eat like lion, fast twitch muscle fibres need much more energy than slow muscle fibres, so your body will not change slow muscle fibres into fast twitch muscle fibres if you don’t give it enough nutritions.

    I saw you didn't mention any of the over-use injuries to the growth plates - apophysitis/osteochondrosis, such as Osgood-Schlatter's, Sever's (which I am now sure I had growing up; never was seen by a doctor for it), etc. I learned in medical school that most of these are simply due to lots of repetitive stress, such as jumping, where the involved tendon is putting a lot of mechanical stress on the bone that can temporarily disrupt the blood supply to the physis. I don't even remember if I saw a single case of any of these in any of my pediatric patients during my brief medical career as a podiatrist. Do you happen to know if lifting weights is in any way associated with increased incidents of any of these physeal "diseases". I'm going to guess "no", simply because adolescents that lift weights aren't going to be doing it at the frequency required, vs. prolonged and daily jumping/running/throwing/etc. mechanical stresses that young athletes would be doing. I guess I'm mostly curious if any actual studies have been done on this particular issue (which, again, I'm guessing NO, making it super-easy to pass bullshit ideas along as some sort of fact). Thanks for putting these science-based videos out there, Jeff, and working to dispel myths and other disinformation that is so easily spread in the internet age.

    Been lifting since I was 17, I’m 21 now I grew from 5’9 to 5’10 1/2 (if you want to be specific) I grew that extra inch when I was doing like Olympic type lifts and explosive lifts and have grown a little too since just doing regular functional fitness with bodybuilding lifts. I’m not sure if the explosive lifts helped me grow taller but I believe that helped a bunch.

    It all depends on the type of weightlifting you do at a young age. My growth plates closed at age 16, because I was lifting 720lbs for three sets of 20. I had X-rays done and my doc said that the constant pressure cause my growth plates to close.
