Lifting the Saab! (plus some exhaust work) - Trionic Seven

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Over the next few days I have the Phoenix up on the lift. Time to shoot videos! In this episode I perform a quick underbody inspection of this 2009 Saab 9-5 Griffin 2.3t Biopower. Also, I try to fix some exhaust issues by replacing the rubber exhaust hangers.
Exhaust clip part number 92152112.

    Drop your side skirts every other year to check for rust as it starts around the doglegs and at the jack points. Ask me how I know! I'll be welding new metal in next month. Dropping the side skirts is quite easy. Takes maybe 10 minutes a side and good preventative maintenance. Consider using POR-15 rust paint as well along with their top-coat as POR-15 by itself is sensitive to UV and will break down.

    I can't tell about the rest of your exhaust, but the muffler looks like it's nearing the end of its service life. Just replace the muffler with a smaller one that doesn't bump no matter how much the exhaust moves :) Man, that stock muffler is gigantic!

    The reason for the exhaust hanging is due to the rear driver side hanger on the muffler being bent. This usually happens on that corner of the muffler as the salt and dirt from the roar hit it directly by the rear wheel. But if it has come to this point, I would strongly recommend replacing the rear muffler as it can fall of while driving. Been there, done that on both my 2001 9-5 and my 2006 9-5. BTW that hanger also likes to break completely of the muffler, causing an exhaust leak.

    I've had a Starla muffler hang funny like that. The left side also wanted to go in the middle slot on the hanger. People should test fit and be prepared to bend the hanger on the left side with some MAPP gas.

    Bra video! Intressant!

    About the underside of the car.. I would mask of the engine and so on and sand/sandblast the rusty parts and then either spraypaint or some kind of underbody treatment. Though I don't know that getting it professionally done would cost, maybe it's worth it :)

  • @TrionicSeven

    @TrionicSeven

    6 жыл бұрын

    Underbody treatment is not a DIY project. Reason is, most people just paint on some anti-rust agent. However, this will just make it rust faster, it is more important to get it very, *very* clean before. And underbody treatments also treat the hollow parts like beams and doors.

    Old video I know, but you should loosen the exhaust from the front section and then turn the rear section inc backbox slightly clockwise as it has not been istalled right at some stage. It will then be in the middle of the cutout where you want it to be, also use some soapy water solution when putting on rubbers / clips etc ................. powerflex ? ............ OE always IMO.

  • @TrionicSeven

    @TrionicSeven

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, there's something going on with the exhaust, but I'm not touching it before replacement as everything will be corroded together and rusty. Powerflex > OEM in this case :)

    might can wrap the hanger with some type of rubber, so when it does hit the car the impact is cushioned....for a temporary fix while you hunt down what has the exhaust sitting crooked.

    I recently had my saab oil sprayed for 130$. I wonder if this service is available in Sweden. It's very popular in Canada and some people swear by it.

  • @TrionicSeven

    @TrionicSeven

    Yes, quite popular here, too, although the price here is 4-5x what you quoted. Do these places also do cleaning? In my opinion it is more important to clean very thoroughly before spraying oil, otherwise you'll just trap the dirt/salt with moisture next to the steel, and we all know the result.

  • @22chachalaca

    Trionic Seven No cleaning. They said the product they put on neutralises the salt. Most people get it done during the fall when there's no salt on the roads. Usually the car is clean.

    That's the sad thing about winter cars in Sweden. Unless you buy a car from the north, where they don't use salt at all. Those are very sought-after here because of the general rust-freeness!

    Just use a big hammer to bend the hangers a little bit. you will face a problem only if welding seam is too rusty, if you have an access to semi-automatic welding machine it can be fixed in 5 minutes.

    Here in Canada the shop would wirebrush and then coat the underbody with a kind of sticky oil, all the way up to the motor mount tops - not sure why they don’t paint. Also if you want your top side paint to last here in the Land of Frozen Salt, a lot of folks would get some paint correction and then a ceramic coating.
