Life on East Hastings Street and Chinatown - Poverty Hood in Vancouver Canada? Sept 07 2023
Is Vancouver's DTES as “h.e.l.l on earth” as Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre depicted? Yes it's a poor neighbourhood but not H.E.L.L.
Don't forget, BC recorded roughly 200 lives lost to toxic d.r.u.g.s per month. Please leave your comments of what you do think about East Hastings.
The Downtown Eastside/DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of d.ru.g use, homelessness, p.o.v.e.r.t.y, c.r.i.me, m.e.n.t.a.l illness and s.e.x work.
This is life in Canada

Vancouver needs to stand up against the provinces and conservative parties sending their drug addicts to the Eastside. Its happening. Just like how in London, Ontario the deputy mayor recently called out other Ontario cities that are sending their drug addicts and homeless to London. Some of the homeless people sent there are reporting they've been forced to go to London and other say they're told "London has better services to help". Exactly what's going on in with Vancouver. Alberta is the worst for doing it. 25% of these druggies come from there. Alberta needs to be called out.

I like how you’re blaming conservatives somehow, you do realize this is what liberal policy does, Justin Trudeau is a leftest loonie and this is what your get. Nothing about conservatives, if Canadians are as intelligent as you, I’m sure this problem will only spread and get worse.
I moved to Vancouver 6 years ago from Australia, and while the DTES was definitely confronting the first time I passed through, I have never felt unsafe there. Like it or not, these people are our neighbours and part of our community. What is most striking about the appalling levels of poverty in the streets is how starkly it contrasts with the vast number of luxury cars and luxury apartments downtown. The people in those cars and apartments are the ones who are really detached from our society and are the ones imposing real burdens, driving up costs and trampling wages so they can amass more wealth. Any one of us is far more likely to end up on the DTES than ever save up 8 figures.

So sad and breaks my heart to see downtown Vancouver like this as it use to be vibrant and alive, now I see despair, sadness and no hope . The government needs to step it up and provide better mental health, proper housing with a safe environment to live in .Should of never closed RiverView decades ago. We are just as bad as Philly now with the drug addiction and garbage all over the streets ..

The Eastside has been like this for decades since the 80s, since Expo 86 when they pushed people into the streets to accommodate tourists instead. Then in the 90s crack hit the streets, heroin as well, AIDS/HIV epidemic, then in the early 2000s, they opened InSite for drug addicts where they provided clean needles and all that to prevent the addicts from sharing needles, to stop spread of HIV, etc. But then harder drugs hit the streets, exploitation of places like InSite began, then in early 2010s, OPS opened and they enable the drug addicts in the guise of "preventing overdoses", the drugs continue getting harder and more dangerous while OPS continues enabling the addicts instead of getting them into detox and rehab programs. Now there's new drugs that the medicine they use to reverse overdoses doesn't work on, so it's causing this state of zombies bent over, passed out on streets, covered in wounds.

It wasn't the closing of River View, it was de-institutionalization of asylums across North America. First Republicans in America pushed for it, then Canada followed suit. All the mentally ill left to be dealt with by local communities rather than by government. It was the age of people against psychiatry and psychology. And it continues now, with Republicans and conservatives and far right organizations targeting pharmaceutical companies that create medications that could help some of these people with their mental illnesses.

So sad to serve and shame to share but Vancouver City is still vibrant except this strip, E Hastings where our leaders don't want to show Canadians are suffering and struggling like NODDING OUT. More research is needed to find the root causes and the treatments, instead of keep providing more freebies into this hood, without seeing any improvement.

Thank you for posting this. Growing up in Winnipeg I always assumed the North End was the worst example of poverty in Canada. Drugs, poverty and crime are very much a problem there. Even though the housing stock is old, run-down and mostly owned by slumlords, at least it's easier for people to keep a roof over their head than it is in Vancouver.

We have fentanyl, heroin and benzos are big amongst the drug users and homeless I have met here. Yet this hunched reaction is just not present here. I am lucky our heroin is still pure, we are willing in Australia to pay higher prices for the original and not for chemicals. It's why the cartel's are shipping the real heroin here, they can get $700 a gram on the streets
@phoenixman8569

@@ilenetyrrell4484 the chemicals or fentanyl are made in china, and when they reach B.C its mostly Vietnamese gangs, that get the stuff on the streets and dealers do not care that some of their customers die, and if it happens they just go to the high schools to get new ones hooked which explains why more and more addicts are under 30. B.C's health minister seems to think that ending pro habitation on weed in B.C, would also work on hard drugs like fentanyl which turned out to be a big mistake....

Everybody was Kung Fu fighting. Those kids were fast as lightning... a little bit frightening. ❤ They actually need more love, not less. If you don't love yourself, you don't protect yourself from the demons. Once they get ahold of you you can be manipulated into doing things you might not do if you weren't being pushed. How many people have to say that they felt like they were pushed to do something, before we start to question if there's not something to it ? They pass from person to person through $ex, drugs, and @buse. Love is the answer no matter the question. ❤🎉😊
