Life of Emperor Tiberius #2 - The Unwilling Emperor, Roman History Documentary Series

Tiberius the second emperor of Rome.
He went thru many changes of fortune in his life - he was the stepson of Augustus however never the preferred heir.
Born 43 BC, into a very distinguished Nobel-family in Rome, the Claudii. Throughout his life, he was granted many privileges by his step-father Augustus, he accompanied him during his peace talk with the Parthians, where Augustus was able to recover the lost standards that were lost at the battle of Carrhae by Crassus.
Tiberius also proved to be a very able commander and served with distinction on the northern frontier, he was well-liked by the soldiers.

I like how you don't write off Tiberius' hesitation at taking power as a cynical reluctance at taking power and many do. Tacitus had a massive axe to grind and Velleius Paterculus who records the same event and is an actual contemporary (he was a consul in the reign of Tiberius) did not think so. I think there is a good argument to say that Tiberius did try to allow the senate to take back power as he repeatedly refused to be involved with the government refusing to anything unless it was with the consent of the consuls. Considering that Tiberius had shown strong republican signs in his younger days during the reign of Augustus this has some credence. When the senate failed to take matters into their own hands again and it was clear that unless Tiberius relinquished control himself and everything that went with it he had to become emperor. Seeing that this was the case he transfered elections from the campus martius to the senate and not let this particular facade continue any longer. The issue was that by the time Augustus was dead, Tiberius himself not a Spring chicken, the senate could not imagine itself without an emperor.

Thanks, yeah I felt I really got a good feeling for Tiberius' character when I did the researched for this video, which is really hard since our sources leave a lot to be desired... By the time Augustus died most of the senators had never known anything other than the principate or the very last violent years of the republic so, as you said 'the senate could not imagine itself without an emperor'.

The Doctrine of Addai uses the word "Caesar" as the highest title for a ruler. "Caesar" means "Emperor" there & in the NT. It's a title higher than the word "king," which Herodus (Herod) was also called. Tiberius is called Caesar (Emperor) along with Augustus, etc. Emperors started taking the title "Caesar" after the assassination of Iulius (Julius) Caesar.

I always thought it a mystery why Tiberius didn’t kill Caligula. But as he was named after his famous assassinated ancestor maybe Tiberius considered it a bad omen to kill him

Do you believe in those rumors that Tiberius, while being in Capri, engaged in sexual orgies involving all types of pervesion and including child molestation like Suetonius said? Besides, I'm surprise that you didn't mention the rumors about him being murdered by Caligula.

Lol I can see the Scorpio qualities. He was quite reclusive and private. He didn’t like people knowing what he was thinking or feeling. Him being “suspicious and severe to many” is pretty on brand. In fact, the reason I fell into the astrology rabbit hole was because I read he was obsessive over astrology so I became curious and fell down the rabbit hole.

His English is fine, but his enunciation could use some improvement. This isn't to criticize anyone's regional dialect. People who narrate need to slow down a little and speak more clearly than they do in day-to-day conversation.
