I can even help you with the third century crisis because I was asking why Diocletian was able to bring it to an end which naturally meant I had to look at why his predecessors had failed to do so and what they had done to allow Diocletian to eventually succeed. just send me an email when your ready.

I used to despise Caligula, and I still consider him one of the worst monsters of History, but he was a monster that was partly created by others. Also learning about other Romans has given me perspective. Lets face it the guy was destroyed by the calumny of Rome as a child, most likely molested by Tiberius, it's not like he was stable to begin with. Then throw in the fact that he suffered some kind of sickness that almost killed him, but most surely cause some CTE like brain damage. The episode in Britain is obviously Caligula mocking all the things Romans value. Victory was their most valued thing in life. So what did he do? He mocked their desire for it, had them go get seashells and come back home to a Triumph. His motive is pretty clear, he hated Rome. Thats why he insulted everyone. Thats why he attacked everyone, and by mocking the soldiers in the British campaign he signed his death warrant. He showed he was mocking Roman values as a whole.

Before I thought he was stark raving mad as he's always been described but after spending a lot of time on the internet, I've come to see him more as a cynical troll than anything (maybe that is madness still, Idk). A lot of his actions like threatening to make his horse a consul, declaring war on the sea and collecting shells as "plunder" feel to me like the actions of someone who is flat out mocking the people around him and this is his way of flipping them the bird.

People misunderstood Caligula because of his enemies propaganda. He was not mad he was just disliked by the senate while the common people continue to love him until the day he died. The common people love Caligula so much that when they heard of his murder they were outrage at those conspirators and demanded that they be bought to justice and demanded a succession of Caligula by his own bloodline.

The common people did not like Caligula, or at the very least we have no idea how they perceived him. He was popular for the first few months of his reign, however there is no information on his popularity after he fell ill.

@@epicnate6277 the common people and the army did love Caligula it was the senate that hated him. If the common people hate him why do you think they were angry at his murder? why do you think the people demand a successor to Caligula even though the senate planned on restoring the Empire to the republic? It's because they love Caligula so much that they placed Claudius as an emperor.

Emperors and their lineage are very dull topics of SPQR. How about the great minds like Cicero, or the great warrior stories, like the assassin who thrust his hand in fire to prove his hatred of Rome's last king. Tell the dark stories, tell the brutal stories, or explain how Roman ideas impact current countries.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually wrote my bachelor on Brutus and the deposition of Tarquinius. And I was planning on doing a video series on our surviving literary sources like Tacitus, Cassius Dio, Suetonius, Livy etc; going into depth on who they were and what we need to keep in mind when we cite their works - I think that could be interesting

I agree about videos on Cicero and other Roman writers, but the emperors are anything but dull since they made ancient Rome what it was. 🙂
