Life in the slow lane... a Gypsy caravan holiday in Cumbria

Barny Maurice ran away with the circus at 16 and has spent the best part of the last 20 years on the move. Now, through his company Wanderlusts, he offers guided horse-drawn wagon trips around the Lake District national park and other parts of Cumbria, giving holidaymakers a taste of his nomadic lifestyle, as he sets up camp in secluded spots and cooks over an open fire

    And all natural. No petrol, as you'd have to get if you're in an RV or a van. The horses eat grass and it's free. Only some minerals for them and to give them new shoes and obviously going to the vet once in a while

    I lived on the road as a younger man..hitch hiking around..sleeping where I could..not in a bed or in a house. Later I joined the gaff..fairground..where I lived in the back of a truck loaded with a ride etc...then back on the road when it closed for the winter. I never seemed to be clean at this time..lots of work to do on the ride maintenance, sometime later I met a girl and married, settled down..now that was hard..I always had itchy feet. Sometimes i would just disappear for a few weeks..thank the lord i had a understanding partner..and as her mother lived with us..my wife was never alone. It was when my wife got pregnant I knew this was the end of my adventures. I still at 71..have itchy feet..I left the UK after my wife died and kids had left home.

    Now that I am retired I may try this lifestyle with less baggage. maybe i will buy a trailer for my bicycle, then pack necessary tarps, cooking gear, etc. inside and go for a bike ride. North, Central, South America, anywhere I choose to point the bicycle. It needs no gas, no insurance, no licensing. it is totally a free way to travel. A couple cheap $3 tarps make a great tent. Food would be the only expense, if needed. i love this video but cannot afford horses to feed.

    Remember also when travelling with horses you have to plan your route to take into account the need for farriers etc. the creature that makes you free hinders your freedom!

  • @jackiecharles5403

    +edward charles you have a good point about cutting a route for the horses, but I think it is we as a people ( big cities, rural areas etc) that hinder our own freedom by putting limits on everything that is natural.

  • @edwardcharles9764

    @edwardcharles9764

    +Jackie Charles limits on everything that is natural? Nothing is unlimited! It's highly unlikely you'll find a farrier in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere, so towns, cities are needed to house the services you need.

  • @rebeccariel2872

    I would wager that anyone as resourceful as this fellow either already knows enough basics of the farrier art to tend to his own horses' hooves, or could soon learn enough to get by. (I learned to do my own horse, and it gave me a wonderful sense of freedom to know that skill.) Remember, one doesn't have to know the depth and breadth of a professional farrier's skills -- just the idiosyncrasies of one's own horses. And, I would also think that the country areas most conducive to gypsy van travel would also be areas with horses -- so farriers are probably nearby.

    Teach the child themselves. We don't HAVE to indoctrinate and program our children. That child will learn how to survive this whirled, how to read and write and do basic math skills and that's all he really needs. The rest of what he learns should be what he chooses to put into his consciousness. Not what terrorists/the gov forces them to "learn". They just want to program ppl to believe that there's a government and rules to follow and blah blah blah and that we're all citizens just because it says so in some documents they wrote and they want to teach us how to entrap ourselves with words not giving us the true legal definitions of the words and keep us dumbed down and confused and miserable broken pawns to wast our lives on their agendas as sacrifical pawns. Time for you to grow up.
