Life in Houston before air conditioning

We take it for granted now, but there was time only decades ago when we didn’t have the luxury of living in air conditioning.

I don't think they hated it, they didn't know any other way. They just lived their lives and went with the flow.

Let's not forget that there were people living in Houston before there was electricity to drive fans. Those are the people who I'd like to hear from, but they are all gone now.

I thought that was pretty funny. I don't think the presenter even considered that. lol

@@cattycorner8 Most people don't consider that. Personally I do consider it because even though back then seems like a long time ago to most, it really wasn't that long ago really...especially when you compare it to the length of humanity's existence. We are extremely lucky to have all these modern conveniences, and it's very easy to take them for granted.

I knew and old dude when I was a boy in the 80s he was already in his 80s and still lived in the same 1930s era house. Was a dogwalk house which is a house with a wooden walkway going through it and on one side was a giant steel fan that blew air right into the living room and it was never really hot there even in summer. Plus the walkway down the middle of the house created airflow. On top of that it was above ground with rocks as foundation so it stayed cool under the home as well.

@@1x0x Actually it was government regulations and building codes that made them stop digging wells and build overpriced up to code houses. They still had wells in that area until Feds showed up in the early 80s and put everyone on the government water table.

My mom grew up in Katy in a little home on Bartlett St. near the high school and they had no such thing until about 1960 when her dad brought home a window unit. It was grand! Before then, she’d be uncomfortable most of the night and fight over the fan with her brother. I asked them how they could put up with it and they “didn’t know any better”, unless they went to a department store or theater in Houston.

We are just dumb, we don't need AC. You can get your house in the South to stay around 74-75 with proper design, and technique. Maybe it would be in the low 80s for 3 weeks during the hotter part of summer. Save so much money.

I politely but strongly disagree! I grew up in south Louisiana. I assure you sir that when the air is like jello, you are struggling to breathe with mosquitoes buzzing and everything is sticky to the touch …. A/C is a life changing invention.

Did taking a cold shower ever come to mind? I currently don't have a c because I couldn't pay my electric bill and that's what I do.

lol so the theater had air conditioning installed in 1946? lol that was not that unusual then. It looks like it was built before the turn of the last century. How did they cool it then?

Lucky to not have lived. I guess some people don't see any amount of suffering or inconvenience should be endured in life or it's better off not living.

No, you would have adjusted and adapted to it. There was no other way before the 1950’s unless you were in a nice restaurant, movie theater, office building, or department store in downtown Houston. Even in the 40’s it was a luxury in those places.
