Life in a typical city in provincial Russia (Has it changed?)

This is life in provincial Russia. How has it changed? This is my hometown, Kemerovo, in the central Siberia, Russia. It is my first time back here in 18 months and my first time back in Russia in over 9 months. Today I want to explore my home city, the coal mining capital of Russia; from the center to the area my Gran lives and look at how it and Russia more broadly has changed. This is Russia in autumn 2022.

I am very concerned about you getting out to go to Uzbekistan to meet up with Matt. I would not recommend he come join you. According to the Georgian and American media, the government is conscripting anyone and might grab him, even though he is a British citizen. I realize the media can't be trusted, but I usually try to err on the side of caution. Nice video and it is good to spend time with family when you have been away. :)

You all NEVER lived that well even prior to all the sanctions. Your govt. is stealing from you. No money for upkeep of your military vehicles. 50% of your tanks hadn't been even started up , let alone maintenanced and kept up to standards in 10 yrs. WE as a people of the world need to stop these megolomaniacs running our countries. No more Wars unless you're attacked first. No STARTING the war anymore! We must all stand up for the good of all people. No one man should be allowed to threaten the entire world like your piece of trash leader Putin.

First of all. … you guys know video. Your warm human message is beautifully presented. Excellent visuals and linking narrative. I don’t know what you do but clearly you should run your own video production company . You have produced a Heart warming message that we all need to see in these increasingly nationalistic and frosty times. In a nutshell, you’re both very sweet. You know what. We should all be a bit more sweet.. to each other. .. keep videoing. .. I watch with pleasure. Grumpy old Scot, London.

Crab Apples. Our neighbors had a tree when we were small children. A very unique flavor. 25 years later We bought the house that was once our neighbors, and when my brother came to visit he pulled one of the apples off the tree and said, "yep, that's exactly how I remember them". They are delicious.

Nice Video. I am impressed about how beautiful Kemerovo is in the middle of Siberia. So green and lush. The "fog" that happens in winter, also occurs in Alaska. It is called "polar inversion". When it is colder than -30 the smoke from the cars, factories etc. doesn't rise as it normally would because it's warm, but it condenses immediately and drops.

This situation is really sad. I always wanted to go to Russia ever since I learned Russian language. I hope that Matt and Julia and your little sister stay safe and endure this horrible nightmare. So sad Kemerovo looks a lovely place to visit and see. I so wanted to travel around Russia, St Petersburg, Moscow and other beautiful cities. Now, sadly there will not be a chance for months if not years so so sad. Thank you for sharing and showing these lovely places.

It's very important that you make these videos to show younger people, especially in the US, that Russians are more like us than anything. The arts and sciences are very rich and deep, just like the history. And the country is so vast that anything is possible. I have lived a lifetime hoping that we would see the day when we could openly admire one another, and it was so close. I hope it is still possible. Best to you and your motherland.

sandspar I served in the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer operating nuclear propulsion plants on submarines and aircraft carriers for over twenty years during the cold war. After I retired, I worked in The Bronx. One of my work mates was from Russia. He was an Army officer at the same time that I was in the Navy. One day while we were going over a maintenance procedure, he looked at me and said (okay, imagine the heaviest Russian accent ever) "You know, Chief, at one time, we were enemies. How silly." Such as wise man.
