My Mother lived through the 1930s depression but managed fairly well as she lived on a farm and had a stockpile of canned food, etc. The skills and thrift she learned in those years were practiced her whole life. When she was a widow and living in her 80s she loved to sit and crochet or quilt. She didn't have much money but she always had a "stockpile" of potential gifts in her closet. Always a beautiful doily she may have crocheted or a quilt or afghan. For quite a few years she would hunt at the thrift stores and yard sales for any yarn and purchase what she could. She would make afghans of "many colors" and by Christmas she would often have 10 or 12 made. She would take them to rest homes and gift them to people who did not have family or someone who remembered them. She was wonderful like that.

People especially kids, do not want to do with less than their peers, we as parents have groomed them this way giving them what we did not have when we were kids. No one knew todays young people would become so materialistic. However staying home is considered old fashion, it is a luxury today and a big benefit to the family and the community for the most part.

I hunger so much for yesteryear to return. I know that life has changed but so much is being missed in today's world. The kitchen was the heart of the home, and it did not have to be brand new and unused. Today's world beautiful kitchens are installed and look great, but they are not even so much as used for anything but getting ice. Sad, they do not know what they are missing. Thanks for the memories.

Grew up with the "mend and make do" mentality. We did not buy a lot of clothes or shoes, etc., but we did try to get quality and then maintain them. I learned to clean and polish shoes early as I wore saddle shoes. Learned how to sew in high school. I still knit, crochet, etc., and still polish my shoes(not saddle shoes, thank goodness).

It makes me feel I’ve failed to be a good host but maybe it’s because they doubt their own hosting abilities. Please return the gesture, if someone invites you, it doesn’t need to be more than a simple coffee and a chat.

I actually live this way, for the past 10 years or so. It started out as a necessity, then became my lifestyle. I have not had a credit card in over twenty years. If I don't have cash for it I don't buy it. I have a fully stocked pantry so like this month I have to purchase new prescription glasses, That will be a large sum of money, so I won't grocery shop this month. It won't be a problem, because of my full pantry.

I live life like it was 1970s even all my TV are CRT TVs. Living like this has been the most stress free I ever had. I'm not in debt like other people my age ( I'm 24) and since everything I own doesn't need Internet if there is a power outage of Internet in my area I barely notice except if I'm on my phone or work computer. I also chose not to have a car unless it's something I could afford. But cars are huge money guzzlers. My pantry is always full. Now my older sister on the other hand doesn't understand why I live like it's the 70s. That I should just throw away my stuff and get with the times. But then she complained about having to pay her 60$ worth of subscription fees, 70$ Internet, a 400$ light bill , 2 50$ phone bills, a 800$ car loan she has to pay cause she couldn't pay her house rent, ECT. And to make things worse one of her shows that she paid for got took away by Amazon due to licencing issues. Meanwhile I having everything in DVD and VHS format. And don't have to pay those type of bills. She is also in credit card debt as well. If I " got with the times." That would be my life. So ya I'm happy living in the 70/80s

I just so love your channel. You are always so spot on! I used to have my own business as a professional organizer and would teach people to live with less stuff and less money. Having been homeless in the past, I know the importance of having that pantry you speak of. I have one, a big one because I never want to wonder where my next meal is coming from again. My little A Frame (rental) overlooking a small lake is old but I love it. It's rustic and about 99% of everything in here is used. When I moved in, in 09 after moving back from the US, I had my mother's china and my clothes and two lamps. I slept on the floor the first night just so grateful to have a roof over my head. Next day I got a blowup bed from Walmart and a cheap set of cookware. I thought I died and went to heaven. Now after 14 years of living here, my place is full enough. I have what I need and then some. I've been able to retire and turn to writing which increased my peace in life tenfold. Silly as this sounds, one of the new things I have bought over the years are my inexpensive red and white plaid curtains. Just completes me and the A Frame. Thank you for your inspiring videos. Love from Nova Scotia.

Awesome video. I had only one set of Grandparents as my moms parents died before I was born..I never learned anything from my grandparents as in frugal living because they were very well off and later became Millionaires so they didn’t need to learn to live frugally. My grandmother never learned to bake anything from scratch, or aka a CouponQueen, and learning to preserve anything..My mom was 17 (no siblings or close Aunts or close cousins)when she had me made the make delicious home cooked meals but never baked anything from scratch nor preserved food..I’m self taught on every skill I have from frugal living , cooking/baking from scratch, to foraging, to growing foods, to preserving and making my own medicinal medicines to body products..all of which go hand and hand with frugality and skills..My home is my paradise..I turned my 2-acre lawn into a medicinal/edible landscape..I love walking my food forest..watching my chickens do their chicken dance..watching the fire in the fire pit,..swinging in my hammock..I planted many flowers/shrubs/bushes that are beautiful but also serve a purpose as in medicinal with some being edible.. I would rather sit back and watch all the beauty that surrounds me then go on vacation. I’m very close to my three sons, my brothers and my dad..

These are all very good tips. I try to live like my grandparents did, cooking from scratch, canning, growing a garden and only cleaning with vinegar and soap etc. However, I find the quality of the items we can purchase has decreased significantly. Clothing falls apart in a couple of months, I got fed up and bought "good quality" items. They lasted a bit longer but not for the price I paid. It used to be a pair of pj's may last the child until they outgrow them plus hand me downs. Now we are lucky if a pair lasts a couple of months. I research EVERY single item and I even look at the stitching on clothes, I can't afford to spend money on items that won't even last a year.

Both my grandmothers hung their laundry outside. I remember helping them, loving the time spent with them, AND loving the fresh smell of the laundry afterwards. I continue to do laundry this way into my 50s. It saves money too. I also preset my washer and dishwasher to run during off-peak utility hours. My grandmothers didn’t have that convenience, but I’m sure they would’ve used it if they had.

My husband and I wanted our home to be a cozy, inviting place where our kids could bring friends. I kept food on hand that would feed a crowd of boys (like brownies from scratch, which are so easy to make), and they were welcome to relax and watch a movie. I'm so glad that you are sharing these habits, that really are more about what has value to us. These important Life Principles need reviving in order to bring back a sembelance of Normalcy to a World inundated with " buy, buy ,buy .." and living beyond ones means just because other people are doing that. Our Ancestors did not compete with others....they valued what they had and Did not feel it was necessary to do all kinds of things to compete with others if they were content.

Thanks so much and I am so happy you enjoyed it...I like your summation of sound principles and non-instant gratification...sometimes I can't imagine how I lived when I was younger having to physically go into the bank to get my spending money out for the week...doing that really made me think about my purchases because I had to plan to not run out of cash before Friday... :)

Such a pleasure hanging out-as usual. THANK YOU. And totally agree all around. We definitely can glean so much from our past generations and can benefit so enormously from using a simpler season. Thank you for sharing your simple season😊💕😘 You are just an enormous blessing all around.

Women would stay home back then too and take care of the household and these days both partners have to work to make ends meet. In South Africa we are without electricity for 10 hours everyday and we hardly ever have water. Times have really changed and it's sad.

I am slowly catching up with your videos and have learned so much. I have always had a stocked pantry, gardened, etc. Never heard of canning dry goods but I have now and have added it to me pantry. With prices still climbing I am happy to have. In one of your videos you made a drink and put Ovaltine in it, would you share what that was? Thinking it was a coffee. I am trying to not buy coffee house drInks as the cost it getting outrageous, but have a hard time making something I like.

Just came across your channel. Have loved watching it. We live a pretty traditional lifestyle, cause why spend money on what you can do yourself. I was surprised though, when you said you picked up rhubarb. It is so easy to grow, and so expensive to buy, why don't you grow it yourself?

Great question, Sharon...rhubarb is one of those things that our family takes a shine to two or three times a season so it doesn't make much sense for us to allocate our smallish garden space to grow it...sometimes our neighbors gift us some as well...thanks for finding my channel! :)
