Life as an “Untouchable” in India

Ойын-сауық

In September 2020, 4 upper caste Thakur men allegedly brutally gang-raped and attacked a 19-year-old Dalit woman in India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh. She died because of it and the police hurriedly cremated her without the consent of the family. This tragedy led to India actually being forced to deal with its caste problem. In this documentary, we look at the intersection of caste, gender and violence specifically against Dalit women in India.

I live far away from India in the Netherlands. I always thought that the cast system was something from the past until I met some Indian medical exchange students. They presented themselves as being from a higher cast and were complaining about the more inclusive University system India adopted more recently. The things they said about the less fortunate and how degrading they were broke my heart. When reading the comments, I am hopeful that things will change one day.

The inclusivity in our college system is needed, but at the same time the reservation makes competition literally hellish for people from the general caste. You see kids slave away a lot of their youth at coaching centers just to not get in even with their high marks, and have to resort to private colleges with ridiculously high fees, that many can't afford without going into debt. it's pretty depressing to witness firsthand. So i can somewhat empathize. The answer to that isn't to talk smack about dalit people obviously, and I don't know what the answer is either. But they need to increase government medical and engineering college seats anyway, in proportion to how gigantic our population is.

The cast system is ruining India. We see Dalits in the US all the time, they move here from India to get a better education than they can get in India, not because their educational system is bad because it's better than ours, but because even education is affected by caste. They come here and become engineers, doctors, nurses, successful business people, and contribute to the communities around them. They would gladly contribute to India, but India doesn't want them. One couple I know are both civil engineers, and wow, a lot of Tennessee has benefited from their work. He's a Dalit and she's a Brahman, do you know, they had to leave India for fear for their lives. That's insane. This is how the caste system has ruined India.

And do you know the irony ? In India people are trying to get false sst /st / obc certificates ( these certificate are given to tribal /low caste / backward classes ) . Because the government has set up reservations in government jobs , schools, parliament for these people belonging to sst/st/obc which means that they have an easier chance to get in institutions(with less to no fees for them) and jobs. Now the higher caste people are jealous of these advantages and always criticises it as "unfair" .

Historically there were 4 ladders of Caste system bound by sacred Hindu scripture. The Dalits are the unofficial 5th step downtrodden on by the others. Those rapist family are on the 3rd and 4th step of the Caste Hierchy and are a little better off. But these petty folks want a sense of superiority over others cling on to the Caste systems. 100s of Millions on Indians are like that. The Caste Hierchy was first abolished by Muslim Sultans that found it Unislamic and imposed equal tax on Hindu men. The British colonial government reintroduced the Caste system as a policy for the heinous Divide and Rule. Although made illegal by the Congress Party of India, the now facist racist Hindu fanatic BJP use Anti Muslim and Anti Dalit rhetoric to win elections as they fail to deliver economically.

I'm Chinese from Singapore, which thankfully treats races pretty fairly, so I grew up not knowing what racial discrimination was like (i.e. we all made friends across all races and enjoyed each others cultural celebrations). I "learnt" about the Indian caste system when I started working and met "higher caste" Indians who moved to Singapore. I noticed how they prided on their status, formed clusters only with those in higher castes/races whom they deemed to be "classier", and usually weren't very nice to people whom they deemed below them (e.g. ordered them to do stuff) except when they looked good doing it. It was weird for me to witness it, so I can't imagine how bad it must be in India for people of lower castes who probably feel even more helpless and frustrated. I'm not sure how soon things will change for them, but I know now I try to treat anyone I meet with respect.

I used to hide my caste in college . And in school kids used to eat in groups and share foods . They let me sit with them but never touch my food . Sometime i get tears in my eyes when i remember those days of my life . My little brother asked me so many time in school that why these kids treat him different . And i had no answer for his innocent question . And now am in sydney , still miss my village . My village was the only place where i felt no discrimination . There were lots of upper caste in our village but kids in my village never treated me like the kids of other village where kids were taught casteism by their parents . Now these upper caste kids hates us for new reason . Its reservation in school and colleges . Because of this rules we enter the college easily . They think that its not fair to them . They never asked why 70% of lowers caste have land enough for a house or no land at all . They never asked question when their caste people are everywhere in the top positions in every field and our castes are still cleaners , peon , guards , gardeners . If someone lower caste become a doctor , they never go to him by saying he get seat by reservation . Me and My brother were in a marriage of upper caste , they invited us first then one of their relative took plates from our hand when they asked us our caste . I felt very helpless . The irony is that same caste now want reservation like us because they think that their people are under privileged . The same caste that took plate from our hands , and 20 years ago low caste guy couldn’t even enter their house . They had different cups for lower caste if they had to give water to them . Its just the tip of iceberg am telling you.

Imagine being born as a dalit. Your family is in poverty, with no one's company but themselves. From a young age, you see people bullying your parents, beating them up. And then when you go to school, you're beaten up and discriminated against, even by the teachers. Its only school but on your way to school, you get harrassed, spit at, avoided like the plague. If you somehow avoid getting raped and killed, and make it through school and become one of the 14% of all dalits to enter university. If you somehow make it through university, with the highest grades, and you're on a job hunt, no one wants to hire you. Here you are, an intelligent person, with a college degree but still deemed an "untouchable." Your only mistake was being born.

An year ago I never imagined my caste affecting my life but now that I learn more about it makes me feel concerned for my future. Maybe if there are no reservations and I get into university according to my marks then I wouldn't face the discrimination I would otherwise but then what about the others who can't afford good education or aren't given access to it?Without reservation they'd never get the chance to receive education or a good job. And even if we do get a decent one they say stuff like "this job isn't for you", "this money isn't for you", "you don't have to build a house this big, it doesn't suit you people" (rhese sentences were said to my mother) and after saying this they'd also have the audacity to say there's no caste based discrimination so there shouldn't be any quota system. All this makes me sad and scared. I live in a peaceful town and I've always wanted to go far from here but who knows what the society may do to me for being born in a certain innocent family.

I'm Sikh Jat from London, UK and have much family back in the Punjab and even there many Sikh's employ Dalit's as domestic help and farm help. I didn't even realise that's what my own family does there until I'd read up on Dalit's, but tbf from what I've seen personally they are treated reasonably well compared to what I've seen here. My uncle will sit and drink tea with them and I've never seen him treat anyone harshly. I have noticed they won't come into his home though and always eat outside. I will pay more attention in future when I'm next out there to see how they are treated within the local community and esp my own family.
