Life As A Resident Doctor... OB/GYN + Family Medicine Integrated Block 🩺

First year of my medical residency is coming to a close and there are some big changes coming my way for year 2... Also, buckle in everyone because USMLE Step 3 prep starts now.
Since finishing medical school last year, I've worked as a resident in my family medicine program on a variety of rotations. I just finished my 4 month OBGYN block and will be starting internal medicine next. That's one of my favorite parts of the program - being exposed to and needing to know so much about all of the different parts of medicine.

    @@sn7510 Hey Anas :) No specific color codes at my hospital or any that I've worked at. Usually we wear blue or blue/green but they'll let you know if your hospital has any specific rules for that. Show up early on your first day so that you don't get lost on the wards and miss your responsibilities. Other than that, just be open to feedback and keen to learn 🤙 good luck! - Gianluca

    just to provide some of us new medical students with some perspective, what is the time commitment like for a first year family medicine resident? ie hours per week, how often youre on call, etc... 😅

  • @nxtgenmd

    @nxtgenmd

    Жыл бұрын

    Sure thing Z - so in my program on average work weeks are 50-70 hours per week of direct clinical responsibilities or program specific requirements (classes, presentations, etc.) To be honest though, the vast majority fill in at about the 55 hour mark. Then there are some weeks where you get off easy and finish in 30-40 hours... and some weeks where you're there for 80+ (both of these extremes are less common though). Call will vary by specialty, school and rotation. For me on my OB/GYN rotation, call shifts were 2-3 times per week and lasted 12-14 hours. On internal medicine, we'll do one, 24 hour call shift and then a few other 8Am - 11PM call shifts. Usually, most people in my program will study for about 1-2 hours per night - I don't study on weekends that I have off. Hope this helps!

    Thanks my friend 💪 likely not, but I have that door wide open in case the right opportunity ever comes up. I have most of my family here and a community of patients that are counting on me (not a lot of fam docs around here unfortunately). But a move to Florida would be high on my list if I were to go one day

    if you are done with family medicine and you did an additional 1 year of training of in Emergency medicine (CCFP-EM) track, can you get the full license From CAEP later on?

  • @nxtgenmd

    @nxtgenmd

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi AM, what do you mean by get your full license from the CAEP? At the end of the CCFP-EM +1 year, most doctors will go on to challenge the exam. Successful completion grants you the designation of CCFP-EM. Here are two resources about the exam and routes to EM in Canada if you'd like to do more research 🤙 1. www.cfpc.ca/en/education-professional-development/examinations-and-certification/examination-of-added-competence-in-emergency-medic 2. canadiem.org/routes-to-emergency-medicine-practice-following-a-family-medicine-residency/

    Why are you taking the step 3? Are you planning to practice in the US in the future?

  • @nxtgenmd

    @nxtgenmd

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Bo, I've talked about my experience and reasons for writing the USMLE exams in dedicated videos but in brief, going though the American exams has forced me to study and stay current with many different concepts and has helped me personally to be a more well rounded and confident doctor. Also, I've spoken to many doctors who regret not taking the USMLE exams during training. If some day I need to practice in the states, then at least I'll have them completed already. Trying to study for them when I have my own practice already though would be very difficult.
