Q&A family medicine doctors | Dr. Rachel Southard

I rotated with the Family Medicine residency for the last two weeks! I had so much fun with these lovely resident physicians. They were so kind enough to answer some of your questions that you asked on Instagram! Enjoy!

I'm a 4th year med student applying to family medicine, and this video couldn't have come at a better time! I actually just submitted by application in ERAS about two hours ago, which honestly was super scary since I've felt so anxious about my application for so long. Watching this video was a breath of fresh air! I'm so excited to join all the wonderful folks in FM - thank you all for sharing 🥰

What I want to know is how can you still film and edit videos like this 3/4 times a month, while also working so hard as an OBGYN resident, yet you still can get proper sleep and have a social life? And you did it through medical school and are doing it through residency now. You have great time management skills I don't think anyone has recognized you for yet, Dr. Southard - keep it up! :D

Rachel - once again thanks for another great video. I can honestly say I love my PC doctor. I feel like we are a team and she listens to me and is open to discussing alternative treatment options. I’ve been to some doctors who feel like they were always right and didn’t listen. I know my body and how I’m feeling on certain medications better than anyone. I’ve left doctors because of that. That being said, thank you PC interns for the hard work and going that extra mile for your patients. Much appreciated

FM PGY-3 here, another huge difference between IM and FM is that FM is trained to care for pre-natal to geriatrics whereas IM is trained in 18+ years old. Also, a lot of FM physicians love doing outpatient procedures as well (LARC, colposcopies, EMB, joint injections, skin bx, etc), great training in MAT for OUD (some programs). We are heavily trained in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and some programs do train FM residents to be capable of practicing in both settings without pursuing a fellowship (as mentioned in the video). Love my job, love my speciality and wouldn't trade it for anything! Thank you so much for the video, Rachel!

I definitely have to say that a good pcp that is open to your concerns and willing to work with you can mean the world. Especially if they are willing to try meds you've wanted to try to see if the benifits from it could help you if you can give the reasonable answers as to why. I fought to find answers to a rare condition i have and my NP that is pretty much my pcp, has been my biggest supporter in helping me improve my quality of life. I was getting to a point where i could barely leave my bedroom

  • @stephanierogers7835

I'm not sure if things are different in the USA or if the residents aren't needing to mange the inbox/lab reports as much as their staff... but the paperwork/after-clinic work is always there when you are a staff. Labs, messages from the front desk, reminders to order follow-up imaging/labs, prescription renewals... Sure you can be done your notes by the end of the day but then there is at least 1-3 hours of work you could do after already a full day of clinic work. This is why you will see many clinics be 'closed' for 1-2 days per week. So. Much. Paperwork. Especially nowadays!

Hey! I’m thinking of changing careers and going into medicine. I’m 29, and have two young kids (4-6yo). How much harder would it be to go through med school with a young family? (I’m separated and we share a 50/50 custody split, so half of the days I would not have my kids with me).

I've had great experiences with FM doctors. They're competent with very pleasant personalities. I and others I know have had bad experiences with IM doctors. Seems like they dislike being primaries for outpatients. I didn't know their training focused on inpatients. Maybe these people are bored.

  • @Msjjangful

FM has OB and surgery, while MedPeds do not. Med-Peds also more inpatient focused than FM. Med peds are also dual boarded in both internal medicine as well as pediatrics

You all seem very dedicated and warm/friendly. However, as a PM&R doc (finished residency in 2000) for almost 25 years, I am always disappointed when young doctors who are interested in "sports medicine" think that a one year quick fellowship after a FM residency at all compares the way more in depth training specifically in the musculoskeletal and neurologic systems provided by a complete PM&R residency. Unfortunately, PM&R is a very minimally respected or promoted specialty and medical students seem highly unaware of it. Good luck to all of you in your residencies and future careers!!
