Hi everyone - hope this was a helpful / practical look from a high level. We’ll go into specifics in salary vs hours worked when I’m actually staff myself. The truth is, this stuff gets complicated - there are many jobs that I didn’t even talk about including academics, private consulting, etc. The field is diverse enough where I’m confident to say that there’s something for everyone 🤙 if you’re applying this cycle, or if you’re interested in becoming a family doctor, I wish you the best - Gianluca
Always loved how upfront your content is and that you don't shy away from the more pragmatic topics of medicine. Great video!

Thanks Jonathan. Glad it helps 🤙
This video is soo useful and should be mandatory viewing for med students in Canada! So many gems here we don't learn until residency.

Glad it helped out :) I agree - I would have also liked a similar presentation early in medical school. I think that showing people what it’s actually like is the best way to get people interested in the profession. All the best!
Amazing video brother. Currently in med school abroad and I plan on either coming back to the States or Canada for family medicine; having these vids in my playlist is definitely a gold mine for that hahaha. Keep up with the high quality content

Thanks brother - all the best with your training. Hope you end up at your first choice 💪
Hospitalists in my facility are family physicians. Because the pay is better alot of our family med grads are taking this on instead of a clinic based practice. And some of our clinic based family doctors sign contracts and will cover hospitalist shifts while on vacation from their practice.

I've definitely heard of this happening and it's more common in some places than others. Thanks for sharing 🤙

That is some great content
With the shortage of family medicine doctors in Canada, anywhere you look you should have your plan of where you want to work. The doctors office I goto they lost two to retirement, so my doctor started ah that clinic around a month after being free. Probably too a nice vacation then jumped into action as an attending doc Whee ever you end up they'll be lucky to have you.
Thank u for sharing !!

Great, quality, video! Thank you. I'm currently in Texas but would like to move to Canada in the next 6 months. And study medicine. I have an undergrad degree from a U.S. university. Thanks again!

@@nxtgenmd much appreciated 🙏
what do you think of concierge med and urgent care? Seems like the survey income numbers for FM are supposedly low but I don't imagine it really could be like that in reality if you work a lot of hours. Likely applying FM here
Super helpful in boosting my confidence. I'm a canadian pGY3 FM in the US. I came in super excited about being a family med doc (as I am from Canada ada), but my US counterparts make you feel so inadequate , little do they know in Canada FM is very lucrative with more autonomy and work than things like surgery

I'm glad that it was helpful :) I am very happy to be starting this July in full time family med in Canada I've heard both sides lately - many US family doctors telling me that working in Canada is better in terms of both job responsibilities and pay. On the other hand, I recently had a great conversation with a doc based out of rural Florida who told me that they very easily clear $500,000 USD with a great work schedule. Would love to hear anything that you'd like to share about your thoughts as a Canadian working in the states if you have the time. All the best!
Love the idea that you get to be a jack of all trades

All family doctors are well trained in both diabetes management and obesity. If you are looking to do specialized training in those areas, you can look for a program that offers it. Unfortunately I don't know of any off the top of my head. Best of luck
Hi sir. I am an Indian doctor. I am 40 now. Is it ok if I give the exam for Canada now . will I get a residency at this age if I clear the exam. Please advice

Can an internal medicine doctor practice as family medicine in canada ?

They cannot. Family medicine is a distinct specialty in Canada with its own licensing exams

In Family medicine training We need to do rotation in all these dept ( clinic plus ward work in the hospital with oncall) - oby and gynae - pediatric including neonatal posting - derm - ent - opthal - psy -surgical - internal medicine - ER -radiology Plus managing clinic, doing outreach programme in the final year Giving health talk Definitely different from internal medicine
