So, this is totally not my scene, but I'm interested in sub-cultures in general as I kind of avoided them as a teenager. I had a hard time expressing myself (I still do, autism/add) in high-school and would prefer to wear black but otherwise non-descript clothing. I only really had two friends and only because they felt the same way and all three of us liked Star Wars and anime, otherwise we had very little in common one of them was a metalhead and the other one "normal" (like he'd just buy regular clothes I suppose). I wish I'd been a bit more expressive during my teenage years. Honestly if I would express myself through fashion as a teenager I'm pretty sure I wouldn't know what to choose. That's over 13 years ago now. God I feel old. XD Now I predominantly wear vintage-y second hand clothes. The only stuff I buy new is my shorts and socks I suppose. I kind of wish I'd have been more thrifty as a teenager, I think it would have helped me develop my self-expression sooner. It seems to me that kids don't express themselves as much as they used to when I was in high school in the early 2000's and that this sort of self-expression has sort of moved to young adults and people in their 20's. I realize I've been out of school for a bit, though when I studied art there were some people who were quite outspoken in their fashion statements. My point is, if you feel you like something or have affinity for a thing, especially when you're younger, find a way to do it and do it a lot. Break the rules, including your own. It's worth the experience. Looking the way you want is empowering.

*stands up and applauds* I wholeheartedly agree. It’s so upsetting for me to see people hindering themselves because they’re afraid to try new things. Life is about risks and giving your all to things that bring you happiness. I hope I can inspire more people to break out of their comfort zone through these videos. Not just to start dressing however they want but just to broaden their horizons and try doing something new and exciting.

This was so nice. I was having coffee but I was thinking it was tea. I admire your confidence and advice. I was also raised in a conservative religous family but I'm also gay, do drag and wear a bit of lolita here and there. Being a boylita in a conservative country as well can be a bit scary too. Anyways love the tea time talks can't wait to see new DIY accessories especially since we're still stuck at home.

Omg that’s how I started getting into Lolita also. I’m obsessed w/ Victorian & Edwardian era clothing which I sometimes handmake with old vintage patterns so Lolita classic & Rococo gave me a more street wearable version of it. It makes sense now why I love your wardrobe so much, you have a lot of rich colors in your collection not just pastels 😊 I really would like to have a community of other Victorian fashion friends! I’m in my forties so I should just start something already.

Ok now I'm obsessed with tea time and setting up my own little tea party while you rant/start discussions😍! You probably already know this now but corsets weren't bone crushing as the media likes to portray them to be. They were made out of light, natural fabrics (cotton, linen, silk, satin) with whale boning in them (the modern equivalent would be something like plastic zip ties.) They were meant to fit around your natural curves while also being the historical equivalent to the modern day bra with added back support and the only metal parts of a corset are the front fastenings and the eyelets that tied the corset in place in the back. And the reason why corsets held such a shape is because of how the patterns are cut from the fabric. One of the main reasons it gets a bad rep now is because the men during those times didn't like the fact that the corset industry was mostly ran by women, thus making outlandish jokes and tales about them that still exist to this day. I'm still in the early stages of transitioning into the Edwardian style of dressing so I thought that this could be helpful in case you still saw corsets in a negative light❤.

I live in the midwest, I'm having a very very hard time finding anyone here into anything besides tshirt n jeans. I've been wearing pastels and colorful hair for years now and before that I was very much into emo/scene look and as a black woman this prompts many a stare.... but I always wanna like cry when a little girl (of any color) says I look like a barbie cuz of my sometimes bright neon hair

im also in the midwest !! and yea, pretty much everyone around me dresses "normally". the closest to alternative people i find are usually people who are grunge, emo, goth, ect. (and so was i, before i got more colorful !!)

question: When it comes to black people with alternative life/fashion styles, where does most of the hate come from: white people or "normal" black people? Asking as a European.

Great question! Honestly I’ve gotten a mix of negative comments from other black people and from non-black people (there are some examples in my Things People Say to Black Lolitas video) The majorly of it has come from non-black people especially when I travel, even if it’s just up the street to the nearest state line.

..And I do agree with you. About whole Victorian/period piece clothing. I wear a modern stylized Victorian/Edwardian/Recency pieces..sometimes they are hybrid of one another. But I do bring out the big guns and will do close to correct historical fashion for special get-togethers but daily wear is mostly stylized, but still at least 75% correct then those 10% ones on online saying "victorian" lol

Aww, I can totally imagine what you must've felt like before revealing yourself, heart pounding, shaking, terrified of this scenario you envisioned was going to happen, and then the wave of release and the realisation that your preparing yourself for the worst was unnecessary. Keep doing the things you are doing because they are great and do good within our community. Hopefully through combined efforts one day we will have a generation of black and brown kids who will not have those fears and worries when joining an alternative fashion like lolita because they will see themselves represented in it and it will be natural for them to pursue what they enjoy.

Omg, the dress' collar. My first thought...can I make my own lace?🤔 As a stylist I absolutely love it when you find ANY natural hair. Hair is such a unique material that is naturally produced, and it varies from person to person. There are so many styles that folks can do as long as you take care of it, and that goes for absolutely anyone. I am kinda upset how so many people just accept that it's okay to have chemically damaged hair. I was one of them at a time. Okay rant over,lol. I can easily see you as a role model. You have a great personality, confidence, and also a natural teacher. Honestly I feel like you are almost a motivational speaker because this applies to any part of life. I have already shared you with my daughter, and she feels the same.

I definitely agree with the “do your research first” part.. when I was first starting out in high school I didn’t know a thing about Japanese fashion/subculture I didn’t know it had a name etc. I didn’t even know it was a Japanese thing 😬 I just knew that it was cute and I wanted to wear it. I had no idea there were communities. I just started wearing what I found was cute (which was fine). But I was very uneducated on the subject. And soon enough I became an “ita”. 😔 later I bought cheap “jfashiony” clothes from amazon and eBay.. girl I didn’t know a thing.. But the more active I became on social media the more I met other black women that were like me. And they have been the most helpful and patient people I’ve ever known. Shout out to black Jfashion community for being great mentors and helping me out.

I’ve been there 😭 I had a vague understanding of what Lolita was but I didn’t fully understand it and how to wear it properly before I joined some online communities. I got my first dresses from Bodyline but had no idea how to coordinate accessories to match the themes of my dresses 😅😅😅 Doing research is key 🔑

First of, I just want to say I love how you make your videos as if we are having a cup of tea with you! Anyway, so, I was only peripherally aware of lolita fashion before finding your videos and now... I'M OBSESSED! I think I had only really seen sweet lolita, which I always thought was cute, but didn't resonate with me enough to want to learn more (and the fact that I hadn't seen any black girls participate in it before didn't help either), but then after recently discovering your videos, you taught me a lot and inspired me to research more about it. I found out about the other subgenres, specifically classic and hime and... OMG!! I AM IN LOVE!!!! I honestly might start working on my first chord soon... we'll see lol. Anyway, I love your videos so much, and seeing other alternative black girls just makes my heart so happy. Thank you for sharing

I’m certainly not a lifestyle lolita, but I wear something at least lolita adjacent every time I step outside (including at work). It helps that I’m mostly classic lolita, so they don’t see it as childishly as many people say. But everyone seems to like it when I dress sweet too. Whenever people ask me what I’m doing or the occasion I just say I like cute clothes lol. If they show genuine interest and ask more about the origins of my fashion i give them a run down of lolita history! People in my town know me as the girl who wears cute clothes now 😂 But I’ve never worn lolita around other lolitas. I think I’m scared that I won’t be lolita enough or coordinate as well as everyone else. I’m But next year I’m hoping to actually join my com and go to a meet up!

mizushimma yes! Go to a meetup! Even if you don’t feel like you’ll be as well dressed as everyone else (been there) just think about how much you are going to learn about coordinating and where you can buy certain accessories. At my work people know me as the girl in the cute dresses as well 😭 or the girl with the cat headphones.

I still have trouble when people ask me why I am dressed the way I am when I am dressed in Lolita. I really like the card idea. 😊

i really like the way you word your sentences (if thats not a weird thing to say!) it can be hard for me sometimes to understand what people are saying but you always seem so clear to what you are saying haha. anyways i loved the video !!

Such a nice video! I just found your channel and I’m loving all your videos and you’re so pretty 😭 Also, do you have any advice on how I can convince others that Lolita Fashion isn’t some sort of fetish? I’m asking because recently a friend cut ties with me because he found out that I buy lolita dresses and he thought they were linked to the lolita book, or the term of it being a “promiscuous child” and he basically said that it’s disturbing and I’m condoning p*dos by wearing lolita dresses. I tried so hard convincing him that it’s just a cute dress/style, and has no correlation to what most people know the term “lolita” from :( I’m not going to stop wearing my lolita clothes, but it’s kinda sad that I lost a friend because they weren’t educated, and refused to hear me out when I was explaining what lolita fashion really is

I would recommend explaining the Edwardian/Victorian elements of it and I would avoid saying the name Lolita at first so that people don’t automatically think of the book. Also, I would show other styles than Sweet Lolita. Often when people see that they think it’s very childish, but showing the difference sub styles like gothic and classic help to show that it’s just a fashion style.

Maybe explain it to your mom without using the term lolita? Like just show her pictures of dresses and say it's a rococo inspired fashion from Japan? It's a pretty modest fashion, even if it's rather loud. Such a shame that parents often don't understand it.

ah you look very pretty asami I like blue , thumbs up for local blend teas, the world can be a rough place, as for all thats going on I wish both sides could come calmly togather and discuss things going on too many are coopting it for a power grab from outsiders, but in the end no matter what we belive or how we look we are all americans from the usa this fourth of july he have to at least celebrate the ideals even if in practice things dont turn out great all the time. heck people hate me and want to shush me because I like history or because I wear stuff that aint trendy, or because I have a weird sense of humor or like steam powered stuff they think it pollutes too much forgetting the power it can put out and it was part of how we built the contry, or the fact you can use renewable fuel sources like waste vegitation, or biocoal made from plants roasted like coffee has none of the bad stuff of regular coal, and the conversion process is more energy effecent then turning plants to bio diesle, and has 80 perecent of the energy of dirty coal, and half the emissions, or I get hated on because I like one liner jokes, or like aspects of an earlier age when things were built with more style or defining aspects and more durable like soild live timber, stone, or nice colored brick. anyway you look amazine the blue reminds me of christmas ornament blue now how about another cup of tea
