SHOW NOTES
Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! The hosts of today’s Atheist Experience are Matt Dillahunty and Shannon Q, so happy to have Shannon Q on today!
Our first caller, Jack in Canada, says that he thinks religious groups “walk on eggshells” more than atheist groups. The bible does not preach religious tolerance and we oppose beliefs not religious people. Matt points out Deuteronomy 13 commands you to kill other believers.
Ryan in NY asks what proof there is of atheism. What is your definition of a god? Atheism just means disbelief in god/s, the burden of proof is on the claimant. Ryan gives us his personal experience and talks about morality and once again we find another caller cool with slavery…
Linguistie in the Ukraine asks if god appearing in believers dreams are a style of lucid dreaming? Your brain functions while you sleep, as well as parses memories, and can affect your waking perceptions. People can use this to solidify their beliefs.
Sain in TX asks about divine command theory. The problem is whatever god dictates would be moral, that can lead to some horrible commands. Not to mention the lack of evidence of any god. The biblical god is immoral and in the event of his return, the only recourse is rebellion.
Last caller today, Jonathan in AZ asks the reasons for believing one doesn’t go “anywhere” upon dying. There is no evidence anything happens after you die, you just stay dead. A soul is the most dead concept in theology. Shannon expertly breaks down the neurology that makes someone a person, doesn’t lend any credence to a soul or an afterlife.
Thanks for tuning in, we are so glad you joined us today. Stay safe and please continue to wear your masks. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!

Here's where the *GOD* hater's faulty ontology comes in again. They think that reality is static and that non-being requires a reason. Of course it's exactly the opposite. Quantum theory tells us that all of matter is alive with vibrations; De Broglie waves are constantly vibrating inside of atoms, molecules, quarks and the most elementary particles of nature. If something were to cease to be, it would not be operating. It would be in fact nothing, and nothing does not require a cause. We don't need a cause for nothing to happen, we need a cause for something to happen, and all reality is something happening. As I say, it's alive with vibrations and motions. There is no bit of material reality which is in any way completely static. So, matter poofing out of existence requires no cause, it requires only that the cause which is now making it dynamic, cease to operate. It's the same for a soul or a piece of toast. How is a person converted to "atheism" from being a theologian if we don't have souls? Brains can't have religious conversions.

I can tell straight off the bat you're not going to be honest at representing the atheists' position, when you call us ''god haters''. Atheists hate god the way you hate Big Foot and Tooth Fairy, Daniel. When you'll be honest with yourself, maybe you'll see our point. ''Quantum theory tells us that all of matter is alive with vibrations'' Why do I have a feeling you don't know the first thing about quantum mechanics and are twisting the fuck out of the words you heard? ''As I say, it's alive with vibrations and motions. '' Moving the goal posts fallacy here. This isn't what people mean by ''alive'' when they talk of life after death. The mental gymnastics you're doing, man. Be honest with yourself. ''How is a person converted to "atheism" from being a theologian if we don't have souls? Brains can't have religious conversions.'' Of course brains can have religious conversions! Every thought you have and every belief you hold is from your brain.

@@jonathanallard2128 *GOD* is a complete disjunct for what it is you're saying I'm going to hate. It's your position you're an "atheist." For me after several million of these exchanges, pardon me I'm prone to exaggeration, whatever the number, 99% are people disparaging (hating) *GOD* to me claiming "There is the same amount of evidence for your god as there is for an invisible sky fairy, that's what you worship." I don't know how else to explain this to you. What is the thing in of itself, what does it do, how do we detect its existence in reality? If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. The test implies that a person can identify an unknown subject by observing that subject's habitual characteristics. Each of you sadistically *hates* _GOD_ to me stepper motor fashion. Why do people *hate* other people? Because it makes us feel good. When I try to unconditionally love a person like you when you're *hating GOD* to me then the hate only becomes far more Satanic. Religious sin is the most destructive kind of sickness, for it masquerades as it feeds off the illusion of health. Far from being open to a cure, this kind of sickness thrives on the illusion that it is the epitome of health. By its very nature, it resists soft correction. Indeed, because it gets life from the rightness of its beliefs and behavior rather than from love,... Repenting of Religion by pastor Gregory A. Boyd (it purports *EVIL* on innocent people). You're not hating *GOD* to me? So says a *GOD HATER!* Wouldn't matter if beliefs come from the brain or not, that's not a warrant for "atheism." The existence (most of the time) for "atheism" is based on statements about mythological, man-made, and nonexistent gods, that they exist. The person claims by denying those claims "atheism" comes into existence. So, or thus, therefore your "brain only" theory eliminates the gestation period required to go from one theological paradigm to another. We all have brains, and you say mine is producing beliefs that aren't true, and yours is producing beliefs that are (true) then it's not a theological disagreement, it's a neurological one, and beliefs _don't have to be true,_ for out neurology to be adaptive. Just present true data to me and skip the jockeying for position about what it is you exist as. I don't accept "atheism" and so I don't accept your claim you're an "atheist." Physics? 12 years here, but you don't even understand what begging the question is. I DON'T accept in context, any context, in which you try to invoke the word "atheism." Before you talk about "atheism" you must prove the existence of "atheism" to me!

Although arrogant attitude is everywhere in these discussions, unfortunately. That said, not everything is up to debate or believable anymore, like it was with year 0 shepherd people. Much is now known. It's about passing that knowledge on people who have misunderstood how something works. This isn't a political debate, but getting to know how the world works. Not being willing to learn new information is the dangerous position, and suspect to many other delusions or harmful ways to think or act, getting cheated, etc.

If there isn’t, we won’t’ be sad over it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Either way, no afterlife for everyone is much better than most people being tortured forever. According to the Christian belief, non-Christians will burn and be in psychological terror/ abuse for all eternity. How tf is that good news, I don’t understand. I would rather chose nothing for everyone than me in heaven and my sister in hell.

I've worked with patients with all sorts of dementias for 16 yrs. Seen many forms of brain damage, from disease to trauma. It has become obvious to me that we ARE the brain, we are its consciousness. And our thoughts and sentience is the 'Soul' if you will, & is an ongoing, dynamic creation of the MOMENT. If it isn't working properly, then that consciousness is corrupted. This includes recent memory, long term, recognition of people and self, that can all become corrupt. It is clear that a consciousness independent of this, is just wishful thinking. I think people get the words 'hope' and 'belief' confused. ONE CONSCIOUSNESS- Ever pondered on the idea of just ONE soul-ONE consciousness? Splintered in time and knowing itself subjectively a trillion trillion times. And that all matter can be a part of this consciousness? It's my take on things-just an idea though.

Ho boy, someone on the show that can talk science. Mr I want to talk about life after death, but I don’t want to explore the very mechanism my argument is reliant upon, got a double whammy. I hope he does listen to the show and think about what is said. I know neurology is uncomfortable for many theists because it points out that everything previously attributed to the soul is demonstrably functions of the brain. There is no hidden magical essence beyond brain functions. We have sensitive tools to measure the loss of that magical essence, if it were real, but the only weight losses are due to air expelling from the lungs and any bodily fluids that might escape, moisture that might evaporate, but no unexplained loss of weight that would have to occur if the “essence” were a real thing that leaves the body. Sadly, those who know nothing of how the brain functions are prone to place magical values on electrical impulses and chemistry. They don’t seem to believe that chemistry can feel good, and be a motivating force.

Hey, these are really great arguments if you could prove any of them. In principle, mental states can easily change without physical changes because intentions can be dispositional, with no immediate effect. If I am driving to Chicago, change my mind, and decide to go to Los Angeles, my decision may not be immediately expressed. My car's location and velocity will be continuous across the instant of decision. The change in governing intention only disposes me to act differently at a future junction. Further, I could change my mind again, and the first decision might never result in a physical change. This shows it is logically possible to have an intention change not reflected by a physical change. It is quite possible to make free decisions without immediate motor effects. God Science & Mind: The Irrationality of Naturalism by Dennis F. Polis, Ph.D. (2012) We see the *effect* of consciousness in the brain. A "complete brain state" is not an empirically viable concept. Thus, Identity Theory (the reductionist hypothesis that mental states are identically brain states) is not falsifiable (This does not mean that we cannot obtain any data on the contents being processed by the brain. For example, Kamitani & Tong (2005), "Decoding The Visual and Subjective Contents of the Human Brain", were able to tell what orientation grating was seen from the activation patterns in fMRIs of the visual cortex). If we found a mental state that did not correlate with the brain state data that we have, it need only be said that it correlates with data we did not and cannot obtain. Beyond the data problem, the equations describing neural systems are nonlinear and chaotic -- any error in initial conditions gives a completely different outcome. The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation (FitzHugh (1961), "Impulses and physiological states in theoretical models of nerve membrane") models the response of single neurons. It generates strange attractors and chaotic phenomena (Izhikevich (2007), Dynamical Systems in Neuroscience). The whole brain also exhibits chaotic dynamics (Dafilis et al. (2009) "Chaos and Generalized Multistability in a Mesoscopic Model of the Electroencephalogram"). This chaotic hypersensitivity to initial errors precludes falsifiable predictions of behavior from any obtainable data. Thus, reductionism is not a scientific hypothesis. - God, Science and Mind: The Irrationality of Naturalism by Dennis F. Polis p. 13. Look at a cobbled together definition for the word mind: 1. The seat/facility of the emotions/affections & will and is regarded to survive the death of the body. It's my understanding and experience that each moment I'm directing my brain to carry out my will, each moment in a dazzling array of arrangements. The normal operation of the mind consists of an interaction between our intentional aspect, our intellect & our will, and the brain, which acts as an interface to control the body on the one hand and to provide us with sensory input on the other. The brain processes data but it normally does so under the control of our intentionality. We decide what we want to think about, we decide how we want to move. Look at this: Behaviorism (or behaviourism) is a systematic approach to understanding the behavior of humans and other animals.[1] It assumes that behavior is either a reflex evoked by the pairing of certain antecedent stimuli in the environment, or a consequence of that individual's history, including especially reinforcement and punishment contingencies, together with the individual's current motivational state and controlling stimuli. Although behaviorists generally accept the important role of heredity in determining behavior, they focus primarily on environmental events. I couldn't disagree more. My noetic & immaterial subsystem of mind is _evaluative_ and *supervisory* falsifying both functionalism, and behaviorism. If naturalists, Matt says he's a "positive atheist" & "anti-theologian," are correct that our intentions have no causal effects, that they're an epiphenomenon, then natural selection has no behavioral traction, that is to say if our intentions can't cause behavior, then there is no way for natural selection to select the behavior they do cause. It's as simple as that. The naturalist view of mind is an epiphenomenon is incompatible with their view that mind, consciousness, evolved. You're presupposing we have mass & weight the same as our bodies (brain).

The circle of life in a reality as I see it but I will say I don’t know, change my mind. I fucking ❤️ ❤️ this show because it challenges mainstream beliefs.

I'm not sure how it works but I was such a determined atheist (for 10 years) until one time I said to myself that I will believe if I see it with my own eyes. Immediately at the outset of the Covid period, I started encountering something abnormal, it appears a ghost was tormenting me. My encounter is with a poltergeist. It makes "popping sounds" that coincides at the exact time of my thoughts. At first I dismissed it, then as a skeptic I tried to verify it with all sorts of methods. It then became too obvious as the sound gets louder (not on just one object and the fact that I have other witnesses that can hear it as well) and high precision with my thoughts. Many times I go to bed and I'm not controlling my thoughts, my hands or body will move by itself involuntarily as if there is an electrical impulse induced in my brain. I got my dad to sleep beside me, when my hand moved by itself, I saw his hand moved as well. It is no coincidence. Seeing this firsthand made me believe.

Several hints you can get that what Christianity has taught is true is (1) Fr. Sudac (still alive) - mystic priest who has the gift of stigmata, levitation and bilocation, (2) incorruptible saints, (3) questioning your own existence (first person view) - that should be enough hint that you have a soul, (4) The Miracle Of Our Lady Of Fatima (1952), (5) miracles performed in churches such as healing, (6) eucharistic miracles, (7) there are people that fasted for huge period of time and survived (Note: not advisable because this has to be done with the correct intent which is for the love of god, normal hours of fasting should suffice to help develop the virtue of temperance), (8) religious sedan chair becoming extremely heavy (I heard of firsthand experiences from people who are Taoist), (9) people that have the third eye (ability to see ghosts), (10) faith - I'm sure you will have your own personal experiences with god when you believe. For my case, I have an encounter with a poltergeist and subsequently, decided to convert from an Atheist (I was an Atheist for 10 years) to Roman Catholic.

@The Maverick the energy stored in your body is transferred back to the dust it came from. It from. It isn't lost. That energy goes back to the universe to feed other living things. I see no evidence that the minuscule amount e lo electrical energy created by the neurons in your brain are enough to do anything but dissipate as static electricity when the brain cells cease to fire. I'll admit I don't have any scientific background but I've studied those that do. If you believe the energy generated by the brain is what powers a soul then every living thing has one. I'm more than happy to concede the possibility of a soul if you can provide substantiated evidence of one under controlled, repeatable conditions. Ditto on proof of a god.

  • @kenwelch198

    @kenwelch198

@The Maverick I've already conceded the possibility, however the evidence still doesn't support it. Simply keeping the body alive by artificial means and the brain coming back to conscienceness isn't a verifiable way to substantiate the existence of a soul. I'm still waiting for better evidence before believe in it and even then wouldn't justify the belief in a supreme god as described by the bible, the koran or any other religion.
