My father used to tell my mother he loved her, usually just before he punched her in the face, He also told us kids he loved us, 40 years later we still carry the physical scars he inflicted upon us.

I noted that too. It's a weird conditional factor. Is he logical only whole we are looking at him? We can't necessarily assume the inverse either. That, while we are not looking at him he is not logical. Perhaps then his rationality is simply undetermined. But we can't see him on the call. Inference available.

As always, the Bible contradicts itself. First it says "there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him", then it says "and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head". For me, "Go up" sounds more like an encouragement than a mock. They just called him "bald head" because they didn't know Elisha's name. "And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them." As an old prosecutor, I can't help but wonder what penalties this "real" judge faced after not recusing himself under the most obvious example of a legal duty to recuse himself? I'm also fascinated to know in what state defendants get to pick their punishment. And where was the prosecutor objecting to all this and getting a mandamus to stop it? Other than that, yeah, it totally checks out. Because, you know, love is amazing.

I can only address the court in which I've worked (federal courts and Texas), but there you are permitted to explain that you are an atheist and then say something along the lines of "I affirm under penalty of perjury that I will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." The Rules of Evidence actually only care about soliciting a promise from a witness to testify truthfully that is sufficient to warrant a presumption s/he will speak truthfully (which may be then rebutted or clarified under cross-examination). Now, I can only address Texas & federal court, but this comes from the Model Rules of Evidence and is likely the case in most if not all jurisdictions. That does not mean there are no judges who believe that you have to take an oath on the Bible and invoking God. If they attempt to force that, though, you're within your rights (and within common sense) to explain that such invocations mean nothing to you -- but your honor, not to mention the threat of perjury charges -- do. Frankly, most judges (even the cranks) are concerned above all else with getting the trial done so they’ll usually just wave and say, fine. If one makes an issue of it, s/he will lose (and delay the trial). Even worse, if they simply refuse to let you testify, then they will wind up trying the case all over again after the appellate court slaps them. The best practice is to have your lawyer speak with the judge and opposing counsel ahead of time. A lot of courts just ask, “Do you swear or affirm that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” The legal distinction is that “affirm” would be the atheist option (for a lot of boring historical reasons). And honestly in all my time as a Texas prosecutor, and then as a federal court staff attorney, I never once saw a court pull out a Bible at all. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen somewhere, I just never encountered it. (And when I was working counter-terror I would have noticed given I had witnesses for my cases who were Muslim.)

For instance, there are judges that give 20 years just for stealing a candy bar or piece of bread while there's others who give proven rapist 3 years

I always thought the notion of swearing to tell the truth on a Bible was humorous since the Bible couldn’t be admitted as evidence in any court by any sane judge because it’s all hearsay. A Bible could be entered as evidence if it was used as a murder weapon. If part of my post is wrong I accept all corrections. Again, thanks for you great detailed post. @@MovieMakingMan Dear man, all things like 'swearing on a Bible" are reported in Matthew 6 as being condemned by Jesus, I think it's the Third Commandment he uses to recommend "Let your yea be YEA, and your nay be NAY" and anything more is pure bluster. When I was a Christian, I preferred the option of "solemnly avowing" that I was telling the truth.

That judge story literally can't be true because judges aren't allowed to preside over cases involving family/friends because in constitutes undue influence.

Ivan, the god you worship doesn’t know the meaning of ‘unconditional love’. The reason he doesn’t is because he’s a construct of the male ego. That god could only be as good as the men who invented him. Those men saw nothing wrong in keeping slaves as property which their own children could inherit, so naturally god saw nothing wrong with it. He was their puppet after all. The bible gives example after example of what is NOT love.

I mean nothing makes sense from the perspective of traditional dogma: all knowing god creates flawed world filled with suffering, his actions make no sense etc. While gnostics had perfect answer There is a perfect being, an absolute god..who did not create the universe, in fact universe was created by a substandard lesser god who being incapable of even entering the reality of true god decided to make a lesser reality for itself...but since it was a lesser being this reality turned out really bad. Creator of our universe is not omniscient, all good etc. In fact he is quite incompetent, and our only hope for salvation is to transcend the limitations of this world so we impress the main guy enough for him to intervene, eliminate the creator and repair the world. Sure, it is still just a story but at least it is internally consistent.

I love this show, always good for sound information and a serious laugh. We don't have anything like this in the UK, I suppose we don't need one, the few believers that are left tend to keep it to themselves.

God is like a mobster who goes to a shop owner and tells him unless you pay me he’ll beat the hell out of him and then burn down his business. Threatening someone with eternal pain and agony unless they pay the mob’s fee is the act of a psychopath, not someone who knows anything about love.

According to the bible if he slaughters her mother and father and brothers then takes her as a sex slave when she is a little virgin girl...then that means he loves her. It all makes sense when you understand the bible is fluent in Orwellian double speak. So just as the bible states slavery=freedom, genocide=mercy, subjugation=equality...so too does it state abuse, rape, manipulation and hatred=love.

How can you not love Matt? Tough love is what we need, no more pandering and overlooking. It takes most people forever to get to a point.

I’ve been on earth 63 years and never heard a god. Even in the worst times of my life, when my 12 year old daughter died in an accident. I cried to god. Crickets.

It is against the law for a judge to adjudicate a family relative. The story is a lie.

God loves you on one hand and the other hand is a flame thrower. If you don’t follow him he is going to torture you forever ... that’s some kind of love 😳

It’s an ethics violation for a judge to reside over a case where a family member is the defendant. That story he told is completely false.

This isn’t even the first caller to make the claim they are calling because god told them to tell Matt that god loves him.

Ivan is a sad example of emotional brain taking over rational brain.

Ivan's explanation is "I have an imaginary friend". That's logical.

And he plunged his knife inside of me, and as he flew away, I heard him say, "God is love, God is life."

Seeing how Putin and the Orthodox Russian Church are cosying up to each other, it's hardly surprising that religion still has a strong hold on peoples' minds over there. Stalin was an atheist, but he trained as a priest for 4 years. He understood and perfected the "mind control" techniques of the church once he attained political power. Unfortunately Ivan shows himself to be a product of that "mind control" process, however logical he claims to be.

Ivan’s orthodox gospel of John (Ivan) probably begins “in the beginning was the Slav (slovo), and the Slav was with god, and the Slav was god.”

I would have asked Ivan why he agreed to deliver this message, instead of telling god to send it himself. As for creating the universe, I would've asked Ivan why he approves of what currently is, especially as opposed to us not being expected to repent, but also to be invulnerable and not need anything.

When somebody makes a declaration as to how logical or rational they are it's usually a precursor to to them expounding some incoherent, ill conceived gibberish. Like this guy.
