It might be worth asking David at "In the Workshop" his welding helmet looks as though it might have come from Lidl.

I have some parkside tools and they are brilliant, I have a die grinder which is far better than some name branded stuff

Got one a few years ago (along with one of their flux core welders). I’m hardly qualified to comment and have no basis for comparison, but for what it’s worth I’ve no complaints!

I don't think the safety aspect would be a problem but years ago i bough a cheap one and it was very heavy and uncomfortable, i couldn't wear it for long before my head started hurting. I don't think I'd buy another one without trying it on first.

Safety wise they are probably fine. Optically they may be OK or just "not great". It's the head gear you should look at. It's where a lot of cheap helmets fall down. Cheap head bands that either don't fit well (or are uncomfortable), or don't stay tight on your head, or break after X times on and off your head - that's what to check and it's hard to decide until you buy one and try it. Also check it clicks/locks up with a strong mechanism and the amount it drops down can be changed so it doesn't smash you in the upper chest when released.

I can’t comment on their welding equipment, but I don’t think Lidl would risk their reputation on selling stuff which wouldn’t be safe enough. And if it helps I’ve had no issues with Parkside things. Love the vids!

I've just seen your other video on staring the course and you mention TIG. If you are thinking of getting into TIG and want only one helmet a big consideration is if the lower amps you may use on a TIG (not always low amps in TIG but you sometimes do low amp work) may not trigger the sensors in a cheap helmet. Heck, cheaper helmets may struggle to trigger on TIG whatever the amps. Cheap helmet will have no problem triggering the auto-darkening on stick (SMAW/MMA) or flux cored or MIG/MAG etc. But with TIG a cheap helmet may flicker between dark and normal and may not stay dark during welding with TIG. It get really annoying straight away - trust me.

That was my first port of call mate. Answer? ebay. Was hoping for a bit more guidance than that!. Not particularly helpful at all. In fact, better advice from one of the other students. ATB, Des
