It's actually not the tragedy of the commons. There's only one individual interacting with the tree. Or is this saying that the tree is somehow part of the collective community? The point of the giving tree was that the "boy" had taken everything he could and more from the tree to go about and live his life. This is mirrored on the other side by the tree, which happily gave everything it could to the boy. It's supposed to be a story that both the child listening to the book and the parent reading the book to their child can appreciate (and all walks of life in between). You're all of course welcome to take from it what you will, but I'd argue you missed Shel's point.

"If you don't see that it was small scale tragedy of the commons, you're missing the bigger picture." If you're unaware of a large variety of different, equally valid interpretations of The Giving Tree that exist alongside your own, you have some reading to do before you decide that everyone else's opinion is objectively false.

"but in no way am I actually saying you're wrong for liking it." Careful, making assumptions in the absence of evidence is habit-forming. "But yeah, I think this book and Shel Silverstein as an author are as overrated as 50 shades and Twilight" Probably because you've never read The Devil and Billy Markham.

I should warn him first if possible. Now, i may not be able to legaly own much in terms of firearms, but i absolutely could legaly use even an illegal firearm in such a case. Itd be a terrible idea but i legaly could do that, though id be prosecuted for owning it. And, yes, it has occoured that a hells angels member lethaly shot a police officer through his door while the officer was breaking his locks while he thought it was an attack by the banditos. He was not found guilty for doing so, it was ruled as putative selfdefense.

Dude, looks like a lot of people have a problem with letting everyone have their own opinion. Pretty scary, tbh. Libertarianism isn't as bad as it is made out to be. Leave people to do what they want with their lives, just as long as they don't harm YOU.

Libertarianism IS pretty bad and that’s why the majority rejects it. It’s “shut down the government and smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.”

@Al Tee Teaching a kid stealing is wrong is not putting forward an ideology. Its teaching them to survive because stealing will get them killed or pushed out of a community (which equals death for most). Propaganda is pushing ideology for power and influence absent facts or desire to inform. There is a real definition, perhaps google could help you with that fact problem eh?

@Al Tee FFS, get out from under your professors desk and actually look something up on your own for a single time in life: prop•a•gan•da prŏp″ə-găn′də► n. The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause. n. Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause. n. A committee of cardinals (Congregation de Propaganda Fide, ‘for propagating the faith’) which has the supervision of foreign missions in the Roman Catholic Church. Do I also do your homework on what 'doctrine' or 'cause' mean? Please, fix your brain, shut up, or just check out...for everyones sake.

"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, and you have a right to defend your house with firearms, with firearms..." :> It was when I realized I was pro guns that I realized I was libertarian (and not just a stoner.) But in all seriousness, if psychos and criminals have access to guns, regular folks should too. It's only logical.

Yeah if 1 in 10 people had a gun and knew how to use it criminals would have a much harder time doing what criminals do, some people just see a gun and think "ahhhhhh scary weapon of death eek" and then try to make it so no one has them which means only criminals and the government do.
