    Yeah the hottest-headed debators are the most easily defeated with the verbal equivalent of Jiu Jitsu. You don't even have to SAY anything, just ask questions, and those don't even have to be pointed, like "Well then how do you explain ......?" simply ask for a bit more detail and they spaz out because they don't know the details. What's really fun is to act like you're totally naive and never heard their cliche sh!t before, but want to know more because they sound right, but then ask progressively more technical and conflict-exposing questions, and then at some point they realize you're not their disciple but their worst nightmare. Then you get the most dazzling fireworks show, LOL!!!

    I, too, find talking with libertarians generally frustrating. I like the goal of keeping the government right-sized: just big enough to do the jobs that are right for the government to do. Libertarians can make important contributions to the conversation about the right size. You have to sort through a lot of chaff to get that metaphorical wheat, though.

    @@firstlast9916 I recognize that the idea that taxation is theft is quite popular among libertarians. And one could certainly argue that governments seldom spend tax revenues as efficiently or as effectively as most taxpayers would like. The alternatives to many programs libertarians dislike are more expensive in terms of money and liberty than the average libertarian seems to realize. The alternative to welfare isn’t every recipient straightening up and flying right according to libertarian ideals of self-sufficiency. The alternative is desperation which increases the appeal of extremism. The rise of fascism and communism in the 20th Century can be traced back to widespread and unrelieved economic hardship. Libertarians are perfectly free to believe whatever they want about themselves and their associates regarding how to deal with deprivation. A cursory study of history shows that the average person will embrace authoritarianism in order to relieve privation and/or anarchy. Think of welfare, therefore, as an disliked but absolutely necessary insurance policy. We should be in the habit of running down every abuser of the system, but we need the system to keep what the rest of us have.

    @@ianleary5780 Wow. I haven’t heard that perspective yet. So the threat from the poor is “give us your money or we will start a war just like we did in 1939”. Well I guess you went a lot further than most liberals will and admitted that socialists started that war. I’ll commend you for that. Welfare increases violence and unrest. It doesn’t decrease it. Anywhere on planet earth history has proven that fact over and over again. The more welfare, the more chaos and violence and misery. Just compare black Americans before and after the welfare state started in the 1960s. Welfare was a nuclear bomb on the black family and their employment. It’s a phenomenon that happens within families as well. The more you pamper your kids, the worse off they will be as members of society. Even happen with other species. You literally can’t free lions and tigers into the wild after being captive. They die within a week if you set them free. They can’t cut it in the real world.

  • @ianleary5780

    @ianleary5780

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@firstlast9916 You’ve misinterpreted my statement in multiple ways. Skipping ahead to 1939 bypasses the loss of liberty suffered by citizens in Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Spain under fascism in the years well before Germany invaded Poland. Let’s not forget the overthrow of a weak but reasonably representative government in Russia by the Bolsheviks. Socialism didn’t start WW2. Hitler’s quest for living space caused WW2. He spells it all out in Mein Kampf. Your assessment that somehow the poor are threatening the rest of us in order to extort welfare funds from us conflates intent by the recipients with best management practices by the government. The poor are least likely group to vote. Welfare recipients are least likely to vote of all the poor. For many years, conventional wisdom was that the poor would use their political power to vote themselves greater and greater benefits. Only within the past ten years did anyone think to look into that assumption. The results of studies are that welfare recipients don’t vote. For reasons that I find difficult to understand, they feel so cut off from the political process that they don’t even vote in favor of their own benefits. However, this cut-off feeling only lasts as long as their bellies are full. Empty their bellies, and you get New Orleans four days after Katrina rolled through. One doesn’t have to see evil intent in this any more than one sees evil intent in natural disasters. It’s just the way the world works, whether we like it or not. Your assessment about welfare reflects reactionary mythology, not thoughtful analysis. Those who point a trembling finger at welfare seldom look beyond hated government handouts for the reasons why those handouts might have been necessary in the first place. A free market system destroys some jobs even as it creates others. Transitioning to a new job may take weeks, months, or years depending on the new skill requirements of jobs being created as others are eliminated. The economy can wait for individuals to catch up, but those individuals need to be fed and housed on an ongoing basis. Embracing the benefits of a free market system means acknowledging the drawbacks and taking action to mitigate those drawbacks. Without a doubt, welfare reform is needed. Sustaining people on welfare literally for years is a horrible idea. One of the Democrats’ many flaws is that they just don’t seem to understand how cruel generosity can be when that generosity turns from a safety net to a hammock. No-strings-attached welfare that stretches on for years murders the recipient’s self-esteem. (Maybe that’s why long-term recipients don’t vote.) The Democrats refuse to embrace welfare reform because they don’t want to take on some of the bigger structural issues that create and sustain the need for welfare at the level the US doles it out. Republicans, on the other hand, would very much prefer to throw those ill-prepared zoo animals out into the wild after a brisk speech about bootstraps. There aren’t any genuine good guys in this debate-just people doing the wrong thing for the right reason or the right thing for the wrong reason. To paraphrase an advisor to GW Bush, citizens don’t grow in the wild. A good citizen is like a garden. The garden has to be planned out. Decisions have to be made about what will be planted, which means passively or actively deciding against planting other things. Regular work has to be invested. Cutting civics out of public school curriculum was one of the worst ideas imaginable. Most Americans running on at the mouth about their constitutional rights haven’t read the Constitution. They don’t know how anything in their own government works, and they can’t be told better. As a rule, the Founding Fathers read the classical authors of Greece and Rome. They understood that a republic lives in the middle space between too little liberty and too much liberty. They also read the Enlightenment authors, who espoused the principles that form the bedrock of modern republicanism. Modern Americans are wholly ignorant of the history that informed the people who built the republic. That’s got to change, but neither party wants public education to reflect the sensibilities that guided the education of the Founding Fathers.
