There's a reason solitary confinement is considered a form of torture by some researchers and people reading into that research. I think the more realistic isolationist dream is to be a Ron Swanson; someone who is self-sufficient, asocial, spends lots of time alone and generally avoids people, but is also in touch with friends and people in society, and at one point or another is going to realize that they're better off relying on other people and being relied upon to some extent than being as isolated as possible. Without going into specific Parks and Rec spoilers, I think Ron Swanson's arc is a decent portrayal of the idea of a stubborn libertarian realizing they have to come back to reality sometimes and that sometimes the best things in their life are going to come from friends, not from hiding away. And they can still lean toward being a stubborn isolationist without giving that up.

@@unitedfools3493 you're being too simplistic. A democracy is literally defined as a country where the power resides in the hands of the people. So just purely based on definition what I said is correct. Now to address the other point. Yes countries like the US which is typically referred to as a democracy often enacts public policy which the people disagree with. And that is precisely because the US isn't really very democratic. Far too much political power rests in the hands of wealthy/corporations/lobbyists, etc. Countries which are labelled democracies can have serious democratic deficits in their structure. You're just looking at it all wrong. The correct conclusion to draw from a so-called democratic country enacting unpopular policy is that the system of government in these particular countries is flawed and not really very democratic rather than what you're trying to do and say that no in fact they actually are completely democratic but the definition of democracy is wrong

Why do people frame questions about abortion as if it is only used as a method of birth control? I mean seriously, there are so many horrible situations that happen in this country that might necessitate an abortion that it makes me angry and sad to think about them. Abortion is horrible imho, and as pro-life as I am in my heart , I always vote pro-choice, because god forbid someone I care about NEED an abortion and have no access to one.

So, sam avoids the trap and asks them how exactly does libertarian praxis manifest. It may be annoying to you and it may be argumentative, but it's not bad faith. Sam is always engaging honestly. Just because he doesn't follow you down your dialog tree doesn't mean he's acting in bad faith.

  • @yarvae

@@ampere11 Sam is absolutely not good faith and is focused on solely optics in his convos. He will stake no position in an argument so that he doesn't have to commit, and then proceed to essentially interview the other person until he thinks he finds a chink in their armor and proceed to parade it around like it means he has won. He does this in every debate I have watched of his. Most of the debate feels like clueless Sam interviewing another person and often agreeing. Since he doesn't make well defined claims there is nothing for the other person to attack but i bet most viewers don't realize how many concessions he is making while he does this. Essentially to debate sam you would have to be really firm in holding him to a point, and have a well fleshed out position. He essentially debates to impress his echo chamber, not for truth. His terrible takes in Kyle Rittenhouse or debates over that should be enough to show how much of a joke he is. He is also very often guilty of strawmanning any view that isn't his own which means he is dim and can't understand them, or more likely is a manipulative commentator. Its not that he isn't following a dialogue tree, but rather that he is only looking for gotcha's, name calling, and manipulating his audience. I'm not referring to this video specifically either or defending the libertarian here because honestly I'm not sure what they were getting at either but of course sam is going to imply, and his fans are going to eat this up, as an accurate portrayal of the ideology which is what i was pointing out in my first comment.

They are. Libertarianism must be redefined form what it was to be compatible with socialism. And no one with any power whatsoever is pushing "socialism" in America. It is a boogie man, meant to keep people from realizing that government can actually be a positive in the lives of the people - even in a capitalist economic system. In fact we've SEEN government effectively and successfully used as the counterweight to capitalism in America. When the balance was right, we had the biggest expansion of the middle class in the nation's history.
