I love that you have both a 1 minute and a 10 minutes final thoughts, this shows a high respect for the viewers who can decide if they want to watch the whole thing. And your 10 minutes segment is the most detailed and useful "review" segment out of all the review videos so far (and I have watched them all). You articulated very well all your points and provided useful examples. Bravo!

Thanks Oliver! It definitely takes a lot more work and effort to combine both the Allegro style 1 min over view abs 1 min Final thoughts into the full review. I used to have them as two separate videos but last year combined them so the viewer can get a quick synopsis and decide if the rest of the video is worth their time. Or they can click in the time index to skip the 1 min in case they don’t want to be spoiled. And if you think this was detailed… wait until you see my comparison video dropping on Friday!

The original game is a blast... I think the thing I am not as in love with in the new version is the new fantasy theme with the anthropomorphic animals and all that; that has never been a thing I liked much in games.

Trust me if you loved the original, even if you're not a fan of the art, the game is SO much better in every way, I bet you'll enjoy it much more than the original!

Own both versions, and I will stick to my old printing just because of nostalgia. Easily in my Top 100 games as well.

Thanks for the video. I'm in the camp where I'm not in love with the new art style, but it does seems like they have improved the game mechanics and added enough new stuff that I will probably buy this anyways.

As long as you don't absolutely hate the art style, it's definitely a great grab! Maybe you'll be like me and appreciate the art much more once it's in person and in your hands and can see the details better and such. It definitely grew on me!

Why did they plaster an image to the background. You’d think they’d have art that matches each of the parts of the board rather just a giant image of an island

How does this game compare to Citadels for you? I'm guessing you like this game better, just wondering how far the gap is.

Since every comment so far in your video mentioned that the original art was better, let me just say that this one appeals to me so much more. It's not a negative at all, in fact this artwork is a major draw to this game for me.

I was really looking forward to this. Still am, but not quite as much after seeing the art. I don’t like it.

I wasn’t fond of it either until I got the cards in hand and could see the details of them better. It has really grown on me to the point more where I like it as much as the original and I didn’t think I’d ever get there before it showed up.

I have loved pretty much everything Stonemaier, and I love Paolo Mori's game Ethnos. But I played the original Libertalia, and it seemed like a random luck fest to me. I disagree with your comment, "if you can't roll with the punches and be tactical..." because I don't think it's a tactical game. Tactics is responding to what another player does - but IIRC, in Libertalia, you simultaneously reveal your card. You don't react to someone else's card. When I played the original, I just chose my cards at random, because I realized very quickly that there was no reason to put any thought into it, as thinking about it was a liability. (If you form a plan, someone can guess your plan.) And here's the thing: I won a 6p game of Libertalia (including against experienced players) precisely because I decided not to care. Never has winning a game been so disheartening. The Stonemaier version, predictably, looks like a great improvement components wise, but looks to be every bit as chaotic and decidedly NON-tactical as the original. (I just had a thought: imagine playing chess against someone, but rather than take turns, each "round" you simultaneously reveal the move you've written down on a piece of paper. Would you call that a tactical game?)

A lot of what used to feel random, no longer does with the great tie breaking system. You know if someone hasn't played a specific card that you want to play, and you think they will, what would happen. It moves it from luck, to tactics once you have all the information. So in effect you are responding to what someone else is doing, but you have to think like them. You are responding to them, but in realtime. That is still tactics and they aren't flipping a random card from the deck.

@@TheGameBoyGeeks thank you for the reply. I still have to say that I disagree. Any way you slice it, your play in Libertalia is a prediction, not a reaction. Some predictions will be based on more information as the round goes on and cards have been played, but guesswork is still guesswork. And as I pointed out, the best strategy to defeat your opponent predicting your action is to play cards randomly. When random play is a valid strategy, it's just hard to defend the idea that it's a tactical game.

  • @TheGameBoyGeeks

The new tire braking system really does away with a lot of that. Also if you think someone is going to predict what you’re going to play and for that specific card their place on the tie breaking track is in favor of them (some cards it’s better to be lower) you’re much better off playing a different card with a different strategy than playing a random card.
