"you sit on the gold and hatch more gold, that's how gold works in the real world" ... actually yes, if the stock market and property investing is anything to go by.
Great review! As a game night host who immediately snatched this up to put it in front of five nongamers, you absolutely have the target audience pegged!
Funny thing caught my eye in this review. Put the video 1:25 and look at the box of Libertalia. If you follow the letter "L" of the logo all the way to its swirly end you will notice that it goes off the box. Now I know it is a coincidence that the end of the letter "L" lined perfectly to the background making it look like it wants to leave the box art. I think it looks cool. A little detail if by design is even better. Hehe.
We've also had a blast playing Libertalia at 2.5 players. A half player? That is impossible you might say. Not if you have a two year old. Our daughter loves joining us for "the pirate game", we deal her the same cards and let her pick her play after we've selected our cards. We take care of her upkeep and any effects we ask her to pick targets. Sometimes her choices are completely random, others you see a pattern as she copies our previous plays. It also clears the relics from each day as she will always pick purple if it is an option but when it is not... you have no idea if you are getting that chest you hoped for. She once wiped me out for two voyages in a row just by targeting me.

2 year olds really should come with more board games. i don't understand why the industry hasn't implemented that addition more broadly.
My favorite thing in this review is the secret ending. I'm so glad I watched the sponsored section and got the golden ticket to the secret ending. Thanks Efka! Another banger of a review.
Me in a panic: "No! Efka, I swear, I watched it this time! I didn't skip it! I promise!"

How did he know?! HOW DID HE KNOW??
The blue screen of death--specifically the text on it--was quite brilliant. 🙂
Just to say, I appreciate the editing effort that went into this video! Very cool, and an interesting addition to your usual insightful comments.
My partner and my jaws dropped when you mentioned all in the same sentence: Exploding Kittens (which we own); Killer Bunnies (we had all the expansions at one time--11 and played with the whole lot); Munchkins (we owned it at one time, but got rid of it) and we live in Christchurch (the one in NZ). What's going on here? Have you hacked into our brains?
My box of Libertalia 1.0 is the most worn box on my shelf. I can take it anywhere and play with anyone, in-laws and hard core friends alike, and everyone always has a blast.
You're always killing it with the reviews
another informative and clever review. Loved the blue screen of death. Agree about Watergate
Also love to see the brief cameo by the Serious Nonsense Monikers box! My partner and I are planning to play our copy for our COVID belated wedding party!
Really wonderful review, super entertaining AND very informative.
Great review! I would LOVE to see a top of games that are meant for more than two players but that works great at 2! Currently, according to bgg statistics, most of the games are played at 2!
I already have libertalia and i still watched this XD You two are the best
Excited for this review :)
Love this game for the exact reasons you name; we like the mind games at two players and I love bringing this to my somewhat interested, but not avid boardgamer family to play with the full 6 players!
Games that play well at 2 include: Targi, Targi with the expansion, *and Lost Cities*

Fighting card games like Exceed, BattleCON, and Sakura Arms are pretty great too... I'm partial to simple card games like Hanamikoji or Air, Land, and Sea... Hidden movement games like Whitehall Mystery or Fugitive... Not to mention Caesar! and Blitzkrieg! by the same designer...

Targi, Onitama, Hive, Santorini... War Chest? Yeah, you can play War Chest with three, but you really shouldn't. It's a two player game at its heart and everyone knows it.
Love the personalized blue screen of death!
Efka - I have just preordered this game specifically because of your recommendation. I have 60 plus games, and have gotten to the point of not really wanting to buy too many more. I feel like I'm getting to the point of not having enough time to play all the games I have, and I'm not really into buying a game just to collect them. The one area of gaming I really don't think I have quite enough of is the one this game will fill, so with that in mind I'm more than happy to go out and purchase it. Thank you for your review of this game. I got all the information I needed to make a good purchasing choice, and look forward to breaking this game out with people who have not yet experienced the joys of this hobby 👍
Great review!
Absolutely wonderful double feature!!!
Do you not enjoy as much or have not played 7 Wonders Duel? I find it intriguing that you didn't mention it.
I watched the Sponsor spot! I honestly thought you'd talk about video editing or something during the sponsor segment, because all those clones were a fun trick. But I guess guitars are cool too...
Ankh 2 player getting more love. It deserves it.
When can we get a Behind the Scenes video of the workflow planning, shooting, editing, and audio stuff? What camera are you using because this looks great.
Great review. It somehow reminds me of Hoity Toity (SdJ 1990). You can play it at 5, but it's great at 2. Also, my group played Gloomhaven at 5. Yes, it became a bit long, but it still worked quite well. I haven't played it at 2 (or 3) and I haven't voted on "best player amount", but it might be that people played it at 5 and liked it so much that they voted anyway.

While some games can be legitimately enjoyed at higher player count that what is on the box, I just assumed most of the extreme answers of people recommending or putting "best player amount" as higher than what the game "can" play, were just trolling
Strap me in with a spaghetti seatbelt because this sounds fun. Having all players choose their card from the same set is a game design decision I rate 6/5. And let's be honest: 30% of the joy of any pirate themed game comes you and your friends sitting around going "ARRR MATEY"
That ending talk was the most uncomfortable 4th wall breaking moment of my youtube life. 😰
Gloomhaven scenario can't be played with more than 4 players. But the cool thing is that a campaign of Gloomhaven can be played with more, being one of few legacy games where people can skip a play session, or play with the group only at some times, or come in for a guest "test run" during a side scenario - and not ruin it for everyone else. IMO Gloomhaven it's best at two, with more players slowing it down and creating more inoptimal plays with players disrupting each other plans. But I know a couple that played it every weekend with anyone who wanted to pop in. There were probably total of 12 people at some point in that campaign. But they finished it. What % of people finished the campaign in their copy of Gloomhaven?

We regularly played Gloomhaven with 5 active players, using the app for the monster decks, freeing up the monster cards for the 5th player. Then increase the difficulty in the app by 2 levels but only collecting treasure and experience for the normal level.
I'm one of those weirdos who will happily play Citadels at two players, so I guess this should work for me

looking forward to your Ankh review! nobody has talked about the Pharaoh expansion yet, so i hope y'all have tried it & can share your thoughts.. 🙏🏽❤️
Fwiw, we have played through the whole GH campaign at 5P. :P We did not technically play with 5 characters, but not everyone could come each week and sometimes one of us would sit it out. And we traded the important missing components between the players where needed. :)
I would have liked to see what is different in this edition.
My wife and I really enjoy Tribes at two (and only two).
Great, nearly same guitar experience here, still hanging on dust in the wind... some kind of :D
Sponsor spot? Whaa... I'll just sing a sea shanty or two. Accompanying myself on the descant recorder. (I can double up, too.)
The original version of this game is one of my favorite games for 5-6 players.
I was laughing so hard for the first minute of this review that I actually got dizzy!
In my opinion, Five Tribes is the prime example for a multiplayer game that works best with 2. Since every player's turn changes the complexion of the board you cannot effectively plan your next move until it's your turn. That means much idle downtime and long turns because you cannot prepare while waiting. With only 2 players the game transforms into a cat and mouse game where you not only consider which move will benefit you but also how your opponent might profit of it after you're done.
You got me. Okay. I'll go back and watch the sponsor spot.
Lovely review with a good balance. As beautiful as this game is I think it would frustrate me with the mind games.
Probably any hidden movement game is one of my first guesses.
How did you guess that I fast forwarded through the sponsor bit
With the Gloomhaven, maybe they play with 4+ players, just not at a time. Like in digital game, you can have more characters created, even though you take only 4 to any given mission.

That's not what the rating tracks and not what it offers as a service. If we go down that route, you could say I've played a 40 player game of Concordia if we count every person who's played with my copy.
I think USUALLY the "Best With" ratings get it right. I pay a little more attention to the "Not recommended" column rather than "Recommended" vs. "Best With". If a large percentage don't recommend a certain player count, I usually find something else that plays better. But currently, there are only 37 ratings there for Galecrest, so a couple of lunatics can really throw off those numbers.
Targi w/rare Action Tokens or Targi w/Expansion?
I wish they reprinted mission red planet instead. I think the core game is better but it could use a bit of variety in card effects.

Agreed, I embrace the chaos in MRP while I find Libertalia to be an exercise in tedious frustration.
1:44 Avast, ye scurvy dogs! FYI, I *did* watch the sponsor spot, just in case there was a sea shanty.
I gotta say, I thought this review was well done. Good host! very charismatic
"Targi and... Targi with the expansion." I will not hear this slander against Jaipur!
It's a rock-paper-scissors fractal.
cascadia?
I think Gales of Windcrest sounds like a better name! @ 11:58
👍👍
Kemet Blood and Sand is not that bad at 2. Is it tacked on? Yeah probably. Is it a cashgrab second edition? Oh absolutely. Does it provide a chance for those who never got to own 1st edition Kemet to enjoy it? Also yes.
Sounds like my kind of game, not gonna lie
what board game did he say here? 15:09

Or "Libertalia: Gusts of Breezecrest" at 13:56. :)
I only played the original Libertalia a couple of times and bounced off it hard due to the randomness and foiled plans. I recognise that it's a good game in theory, but the frustration turned me off it completely. It's the same type of negative experience that you could have if you play Citadels and get constantly assassinated, not out of spite, but out of bad luck. Eric Summerer knows what I mean.
This seems so good but I don't have friends who would be interested in it.
Yes I cheated. Surprised you didn't mention the solo mode too!
There is an unofficial 5-player variant for Gloomahven- you use the digital app for monsters, and the monster deck for player 5. You crank up the difficulty, etc. That's the only way there are enough components.

And it's a blast. We regularly play at 5 and love it. It makes me anxious that the app designer won't be making one for Frosthaven. I understand there is a Frosthaven app being developed by a different company, but nobody knows when it will be ready or if it will support the same level of features. Of course if they don't change the base player decks then we'll have 5 spares (7 with Jaws)!

We wanted to do exactly that when we played GH with 4 players, but having 5 people in our group (meaning we only played it when we weren't all present. Especially as GH was quite easy for us, even on highest difficulties, even when we decided to retire some of the overpowered characters early. One player being the overlord would have certainly evened the odds.
@robertchmielecki2580
2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I misunderstood you. Still, the point stands, you CAN introduce a 5th player to the game, either as a regular character or an overlord making monster actions actually smart and mischievous.
If this is the same as the original version, he is way underselling the strategy of 6 players. I don't really think it's all that random.
The answer is One Night Ultimate Werewolf obviously.

Munchkin? I mean Citadels exists Mission Red Planet exists and the closest game you can name is MUNCHKIN
Hahahah sit on it and hatch more gold: hilarious!
I didn't know that board game reviewers hang out with such dangerous people.
Damn! he knows! Ok, ill watch the sponsor, sorry ._.
It isn't random it's chaotic. Random is like a die roll, where no one influences the outcome. Chaos is where there are multiple influences on the outcome, so that it is difficult to predict.

@@revimfadli4666 It is not a perfect information abstract strategy game. So there is a small element of randomness. However the card draw, is a hand of six cards (as opposed to one card at a time) and all players get the same cards, so tactical decisions can be made. And the tiles are also put out in groups with multiple rounds visible at a time, so strategic decisions can be made.
51st state
I’m pretty sure the quartermaster is a kangaroo.
I played Gloomhaven JoTL with 5. We bought forgotten circles and used the app so the 5th player could use the monster combat deck
You see what he did there? I see what you did there.
I’ve never played it but the reason I won’t buy this game is because I think it’s pure luck. “I should play card A. Oh but he’ll play that so I should play C. But if I play C and someone plays D I’m screwed. But no one will play D unless they’re trying to stop someone playing C”. These all sound like fun thinky decisions but it’s just a pure guess. You have no idea what your opponent is going to play after going through all the options as they may try and trick you or they may not. Either way it’s a pure 100% luck guess. If I’m missing something let me know lol

To your BGG point, that's because these people have only played it at that player count so clearly it must be the best way to play it.
2014 Libertalia board game has gorgeous outlook. This one looks like a pile of manure.
