@@darren.mcauliffe Tricky, don‘t know. This might need a couple tweaks. You can try 2 players vs Automa without Pilferer. But then, how do you compare scores?. Add the scores of both players, divide by 2 and compare to Automa‘s score? Not sure, might need more adjustments. You now have 2 intelligent humans beating on 1 Automa, that was designed to compete with only 1 human. If you give it a try let me know how it turned out…

Libertalia is one I always wanted, but is so hard to find. super excited about this update.

I'm def picking this one up even having this kind of art, that being ok, pales against the original (which I own).

I'm excited to try this one at a board game convention next week! I've sign-up for the demo. YAY!

I love the artwork for both games Do not like them replacing the scoring board with the dials. ( It was like watching a mini game race, on the side. That is always exciting) I like the old tokens and game play better, although I do like giving the tokens an alternate ability and the third player A.I., for a variable gaming experience. Finally, I like the bigger hand size of old vs the smaller hand size of new. I do like there being more cards to play with. I do not know if they totally changed all the characters, but my favorites were the parrot, monkey, and the Brawler.

I feel the same about the wingspan automa. I always have such a hard time winning the round goals because the ai always gets me by 1!

I see some complain about the design but looks inteteresting... anyway if the solo mode is solid I will consider it

I played this at DTW and I liked the game with two exceptions: didn’t like the negative player interaction and while I liked the art in general, I didn’t like the animals instead of people direction. Haven’t play this solo but I’m interested to try.

Gotta say, I really like the new theme for this one. Makes it a lot less dreary and a lot more colorful/playful. Makes me want to play it more. In addition to all the improvements of course!

This game looks really great. I’ve never played the original Libertalia. But, this new artwork doesn’t really bring the pirate feel. And as you point out, it’s still a pirate game. I’m not a solo player, so that isn’t a draw for me. But, I play plenty of games that are more abstracted and still highly enjoyable. I think this could fit that bill.

I have the original game and I love Paolo Mori's designs. I was expecting a new edition because I knew that Paolo had an expansion already prepared waiting in a drawer. Unfortunately me and my wife really don't like the art direction of this new version. It doesn't look like a pirate game in anyway expect the words on the cards. I don't get why they choose to change it so much...

to answer the question of "why change" i would assume the answer is "because we think it's cool" (and i would certainly agree with that. lots of standard pirate games out there... a dime a dozen. nothing else quite like this, and personally i think it's great) :)

@@rahdo well. I trust your opinion and I'll obviously give the game a chance. I really hope the new art will grow on us because Paolo deserve success. The original game unfortunately didn't sell well, especially here in Italy.

Whenever a new edition of a game is made by a new publisher, new art needs to be commissioned because the original artist retains copyright to their creation. The lighter fantasy theme fits the Stonemaier "look" better anyway. If they hadn't changed it much then the original artist could have more claims of infringement.

@@TorIverWilhelmsen I got that. But I don't understand the need to change the theme. Look at Kingsburg: in the second edition they had to change the art, but they kept the same theme. If you decide to change the theme you risk what is happening right now with people like me and my wife. We have the original game so we should be the same target. We should be the first one to look at the new edition and sell the old one immediately. But, because they chose to change the art so much, I don't really know if I like this. I need to try it. And my wife already told me that she doesn't like anthropomorphic animals and to keep the original. So instead of having a sure sell, they are now risk to not sell the game to the owner of the the original one because they choose to change the art theme completely.

@@DaniloSalvadori who says that sticking with generic, bog standard pirates is a sure sell? fans of the game will likely get it regardless of the presentation. they're changing the theme to go more broad and get people who would have passed on generic pirates, imo. pirates as a "hot thing" in the zeitgeist is definitely over at this point :)

I heard there's a way to play the game with less conflict, is that not the case?

i would say its comparable, but that the conflict is a bit softer :)

it's a computer monitor just to the left of the camera where i can see what's being recorded. i've gotten into the habit of making sure things haven't crashed or gone wrong somehow, since i'm recording with webcams directly to a PC :)

This as a solo play. Nice. Games like this with a solo play, are you happy that you can play games like this because Jen probably won’t play these games? I liked that right at the start you wanted to do something and the solo play has other thoughts. Great improvement from the original

actually if anything, jen's a bit more comfortable with cutthroat moves than i am (making them that is). but the solo mode is so great, you don't even have to worry about it :)

I had a feeling you'd love it and I'm so happy you actually do. What a gorgeous reproduction.

I loved the use of "phe-freaking-nomenal!" Really looking forward to picking this up. Thanks for the review!

Rahdo, you mention you and your wife not liking out to get you games. Your a "care bear". Do you have a top # list of games that fulfill your guys's playing preference? Link to a video or list or something would be great.
