LGR - Bringing Motor City Online Back from the Dead

Ойындар

EA shut down this MMO racing game back in 2003 and it was unplayable for years. But thanks to a fan-made launcher, you can now play this Need For Speed spin-off title once again! Sort of!

I bought MCO back in 2002, when I moved into an apartment and finally had cable internet. It was the first and only online game I paid a monthly fee for. On a broadband connection the experience was great. It was a really fun game, I had a lot of fun for a few months, and then EA pulled the plug on the servers. That was the day I vowed to never again pay for online-only games. The car customization and building was a fantastic aspect of the game. It was a great game and plenty of people were still playing it when they killed the servers. I'm still salty about it to this day.

EA claimed that there weren't enough people to continue supporting the game, but I played it right up until they shut the servers down and there never seemed to be a shortage of players. My guess is that there were plenty of people playing it but they just didn't feel it was worth it to keep the servers running. EA seems to be quick to shut servers down for games that are a couple years old.

I absolutely loved this game, especially during it's first several months. The modifying and building up of your own car and engine with decently accurate component simulation, and racing for actual stakes (your car if ballsy enough), has never been done since. I made some serious real life cash selling in game currency on ebay. Actually bought my first real car at 17 because of it. I owe MCO so much...

They Brought in the Toyota Supra at the very tail end of the game because of people losing interest, cost of servers and the rise of The Fast and the Furious scene. It was both loved and hated in the game, but kind of funny because when you modded it, it would have a V8 Blower sticking out of the hood.

I was a tester for this game for a few month before it went online. The game was incredible for its time. You started out with a plain car then went to the garage and bought upgrades. The challenges were great. It also had an option to take pics of your car and save them as you upgraded. I was 45 when I did t he testing and have missed it ever since. I went thru many racing games but was never as excited by any of them. I may try and get the version you are running just for the nostalgia. Thanks for making the video it brought back memories.

Man do I miss Motor City online I used to play the shit out of this every afternoon until it was gone! I remember the drag race was so competitive you could replace every part of the car and people were tweaking and modifying and everything was just out of experimentation until you got the perfect time. The 32 Ford Coupe was a great car for drag races, and I remember playing until I could afford the 1970 Mach 1 Mustang for sooo long. Thanks for covering this, sorry you didn't get to play online back in the day. I would be surprised if no one has ever made a personal server for this. Like I said people were super competitive

This game was ahead of it's time.. At least for me, I also didn't have an internet worthy of online play at the time.. not even close. My PC multiplayer endeavors in the late 90s and earlier 2000s was restricted to local network. Good times though because nowadays I think online gaming sucks... Having all your friends in the same room with a bunch of PCs locally hooked up together was 1000 more fun that it is today playing online with a bunch of faceless strangers... I rarely play any multiplayer now.

This game was awesome at it's time. In the game you received a paycheck, i don't remember if it was a once a day thing or what. But you earn money that way and from races. You bought a junker, went on an auction house and bought parts to fix and beef up your rat rod! Parts from different engine blocks, camshafts, headers, exhausts....all which had an affect on your car. There was track racing and drag racing as well. I "think" you could race for slips, im not sure. They kinda redid this game and it was called Need for Speed World, but it wasn't the same, it lost a lot of what made MCO great. An that game is shutdown too. I wish MCO would get a proper remake.

Sadly, with more and more games going to a 'Games as Services' model, this will be the norm. Heck, we will be lucky to be able to do even this with future titles. On top of that, with 'Cloud Gaming' being sold as the future, we may never even be able to play a game like this in the future period. I am glad that there has been some effort to allow Motor City Online to be playable after it was long gone. I hope that the Destinys and Overwatches of today will get this treatment in the future so that they never truly go away.

And just because we often make fun of those games doesn't mean these issues of game preservation aren't important or that someone may actually want to play Destiny in the future. Once Destiny 12 (or whatever) is out and the old servers are totally gone, there should still be a way to play the old games though, ideally.

The supra, and mitsubishi were special releases that I think were tied in with the Fast and Furious movie success if I remember correctly. They were pretty difficult to get and I think it came from winning a pretty big race that would be considered sort of 'late game' at this point. They were some of the final cars released before it was shut down. Sort of hinted to the community that something weird was going on.

They were both powered by Ford 351, the cars were rushed and lazy. On top of that, they felt out of place.

I played this game religiously as a kid, to this day it's the best car game I have ever played. It was like a racing mmo rpg. You could truly build cars in this game. It was all about power to weight ratios and car classes. Not sport, street, or racing "kits" but real branded individual parts and the selections was huge I believe it was over 2000. There were chat lobbies with different scenes like the diner, the top leveled players in the chat would get there cars in the parking places. I spent hours chatting with people watching cars pull in and drive out. Clubs would host car shows in these lobbies where you could pay an entry fee and everyone would vote on who has the coolest car and winner got the money. I hosted and participated in these all the time. Cam shafts, pistons, engine blocks, springs with different spring rates, super chargers, nitrous kits. and everything effected the way the cars drove from weight to rpm ranges the way it handled even the exhaust sound. I had a folder full of print outs with different build combination for different cars at different tracks and kept track of what works and what doesn't. It was everything games like forza horizon try to be today with so much more detail. Rare parts and cars with special modifications or paint jobs you could only get through online auction or trading other players. They even started adding player submitted paint jobs to cars and then auction them off. I used to wake up before school to check auctions and bid on cars with rare parts to get them cheaper than what they were worth on the open market. Then use those rare cars and parts to sell or to win top times on tracks for myself and my club. Stuff like chop tops that had better aero and top speed, convertibles, fenderless, bumperless, to decrease weight and different combinations of them all. Weekly leader boards to compete for the top times, bragging rights, and cash prizes. Turf wars that required people working together in clubs to get the best average top times. Everyone started with a rusty car, in the beginning you could barely afford to repair your car after races so you had to keep racing with damaged cars. or do sponsored races where everyone drove a predetermined car. Parts wore out and had to be scrapped. even car bodies wore out if you raced them long enough. Even with the game coming to an end it was a lot of fun the Dev's who were very active in the game and you could chat with them in lobbies or race them in events started giving out crazy cars. like cars with no hoods or other body parts. I was given a hoodless convertible gto. They started adding modern cars just for the hell of it. Oh and I almost forgot all the one time special holiday themed stuff you would get that would become rare. My favorite cars were my chop top reaper camaro, fenderless bumperless chop top skull coupe, sponsored convertible vette, and of course my formula firebird with rare parts that would dominate goose point with a setup so good people would give me their formula and pay me to put the same parts in it and trade it back. or I would lend it out to club members to post times with for turf wars. My dad even played, he got so competitive in it he bought a racing wheel and upgraded from aol dial up to our first broadband internet connection.

I bought it not realizing it was an online only game and we only had dial-up which my mom would hardly let me use. I was so bummed out because i loved cars even then! Speaking of resurrected online-only games, have you heard about FreeSO? It's an attempt to make Sims Online playable again! I missed out on the Sims online because while my parents let me play The Sims, they weren't comfortable with the idea of a kid like me playing with random strangers on the internet, and then when I was older they had long since pulled the plug. Haven't played much of it yet, but it's been a blast so far. Thanks as always for this review, good to know an awesome little racing game like this is alive again now too. EDIT: ANd there you go mentioning it at the very end XD

The Supra and Eclipse.. Let me tell you a little story... So a little movie came out in 2001 called The Fast and the Furious. What were the two hero cars of that movie? An Eclipse and a Supra. So MCO was getting stale, they didnt want to update it, no new cars, pay to win wasnt a thought of thing yet ect, so to test if the gamers wanted muscle cars or tuners, they used MCO as a guinea pig, injecting the car bodies in to see what would happen. Well...Since we hadnt had new cars in a very long time, they got bought by literally everyone. The hard core racers loved them because they were light and had a lower co efficient of drag, and the kids bought them because duh, imports. EA missread this data as, nobody wants muscle cars, and scrapped MCO for Underground. Thats it, it sucks, we wanted more old cars, tracks and an updated c=game engine, but were scrapped in the import craze.

We're in the same boat LGR! This is my first time seeing this game. Back in the late 90's I was obsessed with NFS games but MCO was really out of reach. My family can't afford a fast internet connection at that time. Great video. It just makes me sad that the NFS series will never be like this. The race tracks were really creative back then. It was like a theme ride. Today NFS race tracks are bland and boring. If EA is really serious in bringing this franchise back to life they need to bring back themed tracks.

The customization of the cars, the officially licensed parts, the community feel, seeing you car pull up to the diner in the lobby if you were high enough in the ranking. The game was pure awesome back in the day. The racing itself was really only one half of the experience. It really is too bad this "hack" doesn't show off the other half. This was the best car game I have ever played. The car builds were insane, I remember selling car setups for in-game money. You could choose engine compression, cam size, carbs, heads, rear gear ratio, transmission, springs, shocks, all brake components. If your car was not set up right, you would get destroyed in races. I was in a club called "Tin Indians", we were a bunch of Pontiac fans. We would also go into the file and change the car skins, like making a general lee and all types of special paint, only the person that changed their files could see it, but it was still amazing. The car and part auction were also amazing, once in a while, rare parts and paint schemes would pop up. The auction was also a great way to make money, I would get up at a certain time in the am when servers had fewer people and watch the auctions, buy special parts and then just relist them for more money. Thanks for the video, this game is dearly missed
