LG C3: Great TV! Can it Replace a Monitor?

Ғылым және технология

One of the best TV's out there, but how will it fair as a work monitor?
My one week experience with the LG C3 as a main monitor.
PRICE CLARIFICATION: Currently down from $1,150 to $900 new at Best Buy and Amazon, $1,500 was a typo
TEXT FRINGING! Something I forgot to talk about in the video, because well, it was pretty much non-existent. Not once did I notice it, to the point I even forgot to bring it up. If you do run into this issue, windows "ClearType" should clean things up for you.

    Love the format for the video and your graphics, talking points, and editing is top notch! Just picked up the 42" LG C2 to use as a work monitor during the day and then gaming pc monitor at night. This is coming from a 7 year old 24" monitor and couldn't be happier!

    I love this TV, been using it for more than five months. Do you use any streaming devices for DV or inbuilt webOS? Ive paired it with ATV and its a significant upgrade from webOS (also infuse for movies is a great experience). I just need to get a high end pc built to complete mysetup. I'm still running on 4k60hz 8bit ycbcr 422 sdr for nonhdr content ofcourse thats my pc limitation. But I'm sure you get 4k120hz 12bit depth on your pc.

    Just to offer some more context for the burn-in discussion. I’ve used both my 77” G1 and a 55” Sony A80J for the past year, both running a PC/Mac for productivity and media consumption, as well as heavy PC gaming. The Sony has always suffered from temporary image retention (not the same as burn-in), but outside of that neither display show any signs of burn-in. I’m one of those gamers that plays only a few games, but play them for long hours, so I would be the perfect candidate for IR and never had a single issue with either display. As an aside, I own the equipment to calibrate my own displays as I do color critical work full time. I use both CalMan and ColourSpace and have to say that the LGs have been some of the best out of the box for color accuracy of any display on the market, including some of my higher-end factory calibrated monitors. I made one quick adjustment to my G1 to calibrate to D65 via the service menu and that was it. < 1 dE nearly out of the box. The Sony was nearly there as well, but the LG could’ve been used for reference work within margins of error and been suitable for a professional workflow. Rock solid.

  • @chettystudios

    Glad to hear that! Was planning on picking up a colorometer somewhere down the line but since my work isn't super color critical I'm not stressing it. Compared to my Samsung I could immediately tell out of the box they were pretty damn close to accurate

    I'm thinking of getting an LG C3 OLED and want to use it as a computer monitor and get out calibrated for reference colour for DaVinci Resolve. I have the X-Rite Display Pro and I am wondering whether I can use that software to calibrate the LG TV or do I have to purchase Calman for LG? I can't find any information about this on the Internet so your advice your be appreciated. Thanks

  • @Silverjerk

    @Silverjerk

    11 күн бұрын

    @@vivamoment you wouldn’t be able to calibrate the TV itself without CalMan. CalMan will tap into the internal pattern generator and actually rewrites the LUTs directly to the TV, whereas PC calibration software simply creates a color profile for Windows (or Mac). Now, if you’re only using it as a monitor, the color profile should be sufficient for your needs since you’ll be locked into a single input and only using the TV for that purpose. Just keep in mind once you change inputs you won’t be getting the benefits of the calibration any longer.

    Awesome review. I have the LG C2 and I got around the ABL by setting HDMI input to PC and choose either the isf modes and/or game mode. Under there the dark isf mode is set to 63 OLED pixel brightness, contrast to 80, gamma to BT.1886, color dept under Color to 55 and sharpness to 0, which also helps in some games. light isf is set to 93 OLED pixel brightness, contrast to 80, gamma to 2.2, color dept to 55 and sharpness to 0. I would only go curved if you sit close to the screen and it's more than 32". Anything smaller than that there's no need for a curve, and anything larger the curve can be beneficial if you play games on keyboard and mouse or sit close to the screen since it fills in your peripheral vision with screen and can make things more readable without having to move your head and games more immersive

    BURNIN: I started with LG CX 55 TV 2020 as a monitor. After owning a Samsung Note 8 with OLED SCREEN and seeing the burnin issues on this phone with one particular app, I was worried about burnin. But OLEDs seems to come a long way since then. I now own the Samsung S21 Ultra for 3 years and that same app has no burnin issues on this phone and I now use the app more often. My LG CX TV shows no sign of burin issues (TV/PC monitor first two years, second two years monitor only with daily use). I have now added a LG C2 55" (16 months ago), and LG C3 to my office. The LG CX is now back in the family room where it started (TV/Monitor) and looking very good. I am looking very hard at all the TVs and Phone for burnin issues and have yet been able to see any. I am retired IT and mainly do Flight Simulator, F1 racing (Racing cockpit / Flight Yokes with Bravo Quadrant) and Music. So lots of static screens. I do have the screen OLED refresh and quarterly manually run OLED refresh my self on all devices. I also changed my browser from a standard white theme to dark.

    Overall picture quality the C3 since it's 4k, but It really depends on the games you play and how far away you sit. If you play on keyboard and mouse the TV has a bit too much verticality, but if you play on controller, sit back a bit, and don't push over 120fps its a solid option. As for the G9, although its 1440p I like it much better for fast paced games due to the 240hz refresh rate and the screen height is perfect for sitting close playing keyboard and mouse without it towering over you. Definitely plan on making a comparison video sometime in the future, but essentially when talking gaming, they're two different displays for two different types of people. C3 for controller players that don't need over 120hz and G9 for people who enjoy the 32:9 aspect ratio, sit closer to the screen, and value a high refresh rate over 120hz

    Hey no offense taken I’m always looking for some constructive criticism to try and make these better! This wasn’t really meant to “sell” or discourage anybody from buying the monitor, just a simple rundown of some notable features and my experience using it so far. I do however plan to do a long term review in the near future now that I’ve been using it for quite some time, and in that video I plan to talk about who the TV is and isn’t for and if it’s a solid purchase or not. These “7 days in 7 minutes” aren’t served for the purpose of a buying guide but rather an unboxing and first look and the “buying guide” style will come after I’ve had some more hands on time.
