Levels Of Kit: The Fighting Load

The second video in a three part series, providing information in regards to the Orion Training Group Small Unit Sustainment and Small Unit Maneuver classes. In conjunction with other videos on this channel and the OTG channel; videos serve as a primer for folks taking the class, as well as general information to all.
This is the next level of kit, up from Items On The Body. The fighting load carries those items which take life and save life, anything else is superfluous to this level of kit and a common mistake is people forcing themselves to carry sustainment items and lots of "just in case" items.

    Your perspective, based on your past, is VERY valuable to the civilian sector. So many in the civilian community build their kit based on past military experience, or the advice of others- and that worldview was "available resupply, available support" That is a distinct and usually overlooked difference. Thank you, sir.

    Solid info all around. I appreciate solid, and straight to the point information. I have owned a few rigs personally (haley strategic, spiritus etc). But recently I turned in my old, FLC for a new TAPS. It does have flaws, but it serves its purpose and I believe for the price and customizability it cannot be beat. Venture Surplus has some solid videos on it. Then I got introduced to a split rig. And man I fell in love. Easy on/off, nothing directly in the front of you and my personal split rig can be swapped between 556 and 308/6.5 mags. It holds loads so much better than the TAPS or any other system I've owned. My current setup has me with 2-3 quarts of water, 10-16 556 mags(8 easy access, 2 in a Spiritus SPUD, 2-4 in GP pouch), 2 frags, 2 TQ's, full IFAK (In a roll 1 dangler on my left side), radio and 2 large GP pouches that I'm still testing out for how I want them organized. VS my taps that hold 6-8 556 mags max of 2 quarts of water, 2 frags and 1 medium GP pouch and a radio while not supporting the weight very well. I used a custom made dangler mod for my ifak. This is of course, my opinion and I have not used the TAPS or my split rig in any combat situation. Only FTX's so far.

    I just wanted to mention something I don't see a lot of tactical guys talk about when mentioning fighting knives/tactical knives. I've noticed many don't have a crossguard or carry one with a crossguard. But if you genuinely plan on using it in combat, I would highly suggest getting one with a crossguard. From police reports/officers I've spoke with, to historical accounts (i.e. the invention of the Bowie knife story), and of course just looking at modern testing videos from a myriad of sources (there's plenty on youtube, and otherwise) - all suggest a crossguard to be necessary on a fighting knife. The reason a crossguard is necessary is to mitigate a percentage of the risk the user takes when thrusting the blade. The chances of that blade catching or sticking on something hard (bone, cartlidge, whatever) are high, and the chance the force you applied to that thrust continuing after the blade has stopped (leading to your hand moving from the handle, onto the blade) are even higher. Having a crossguard in place mitigates these chances (though the chance is still not zero) significantly when talking melee use. Again - look at police reports the party doing the stabbing often ends up cutting their own hand and dropping the knife; the development of the Bowie knife and why it has a cross guard; or any of the testing videos online relating to crossguard vs non crossguarded blades during thrust test. Thanks.

  • @Blakewater0326

    @Blakewater0326

    There is much to blade design in mitigating the risk of cutting yourself, yes. And a guard on the knife certainly helps, though it isn't the only factor, and training cannot be understated either. There are also plenty of examples of people stabbing someone with a simple kitchen knife without cutting themselves as a counter point. You aren't mistaken, I'm just looking at both sides of the argument.

    @@Blakewater0326 Thank you for taking time to comment, and respond in depth. It is appreciated. It outlines your perspective on the subject more clearly and I can understand your point of view a bit better. And a couple things I could add to the non cross guard perspective is: there are numerous incidents where self injury occured even with a crossguard present. AND if you plan on using the knife as a tool frequently/for utility a crossguard can just get in the way or impede the knifes ability to do its job. Ironically enough the Tall Tale relating to the Bowie knife is Jim's brother got into a brawl (Ive also heard it as "he was skinning a rabbit and his fingers slipped!) with a kitchen or butchers blade and Rezin Bowie said it'd have been perfect had it been made with a crossguard. Now the validity and how true that story is, should likely be taken with several grains of salt. But still. Thank you for taking time to reply and share your thoughts. It is warmly reciprocated.
