Kit-Siderations: Ammo Load Outs

This is some long form content based off posts and comments from Instagram. Be sure to check out @blakewater0326 on IG and go through recent posts to understand what the conversation happening is all about.
This video is meant to discuss the differences in why load outs may vary across platforms built for different mission sets.
When building your fighting load(s), you must build it for the mission set, and make it scalable to meet mission tasks. Mission sets can include raids, attack and hold ground, the defense, and reconnaissance. Tasks within given mission sets could be destruction or capture on a raid; ground, urban, or amphibious reconnaissance; tactical tasks can vary and then those tasks themselves may vary in scale.
Being able to quickly adapt your fighting load to the mission at hand is vital to ensuring a proper setup.
I did my best to edit out sniffles and throat clearing, allergies hit me today

I'm running the 2 layer system and it's a bit of a pain in the hide site but as a medic allows me to run a MARCH belt on the belt kit that has room for a couple mags, a smoke and a frag. This not only keeps my chest rig a little more slimmed down but prepares me to perform required treatments without having to dig into my ruck until we have earned the ability to give our casualties more attention.

Myself as a team medic, my medics, and my SARC Corpsmen all just carried a slimmed down med bag, and each member of the patrol carried a beefed up IFAK. Doing so enabled the team med bag to be slimmer, and the SOP was to have your "go bag" out and on top of the ruck in the hide for breakout drill purposes. And as the "go bag" has the majority of mission essential items, its always right where you need it for access.

Few channels go into developing a "community"; it'd be great to see more on that as a standalone topic. I always thought that a county-based mentality that liaises with the sheriff's department, maybe local law enforcement, search & rescue, schools, etc. as well as neighboring counties would be paramount. Guess I could get off the barstool and poke around other VFWs ;)

It starts with our neighborhoods and our friends' neighborhoods. Use the commonalities to tie in together, and reaching out to local law enforcement about setting up a volunteer group to assist with certain emergencies would likely go well with many departments so long as you're not offering tactical support.

The considerations are less about the *tactics* involved and more about Rules Of Engagement. For military application, hostile act/ hostile intent is often enough to apply deadly force. For Law Enforcement, and by extension civilians, you must be able to articulate an immediate threat to your life or someone in the immediate vicinity. Police have a couple other exceptions when it comes to public safety however, in either case you will find yourself at the end of an inquiry of some kind.

Love your stuff @Blakewater, could you create a video on what you would expect to see from a civilian point of view, and what you should take with you? I’d imagine it’s somewhat similar in concept that you have no backup, QRF, or call ins, but you’re going to be working out of the local populace, your car, and houses. Taking 7 days worth of stuff in very overtly looking military gear into the woods to set up an OP/LP doesn’t really make sense to me.

In Long Range Reconnaissance and Surveillance LRRS in the Army in the 80s.. We carried 20 magazines, Minimum usually more. 9 in pouches on our belt, at least ten more in bandoleers right on top of our rucks. The Alice Large had three mag pouches on it's exterior. We'd fill those two. Ammo: "Better to have and not need, than need and not have." Even for an Active Shooter, some of those nut jobs are packing a lot of ammo... Why just have 3 mags on a plate carrier? Don't be the guy who radios he needs more 5.56 ammo.

The problem these days a lot of people want to be like everyone else and think that is how it has to be I can tell you for riding in a gun mount for 2 years as a 50 gunner in Iraq my load out is way different now because I’m older and in a defensive mode. I’m hoping there isn’t a war here but I train for it only to feel better about myself so keep water and ammo on yourselves. Remember if you want to be a assaulter join the military and ask for the training if you don’t you won’t get any and train hard and keep fit and you will get more out of the service.

Commenting a second time because I want your channel to get the boost: ~17:00 you mentioned logistics and mentioned not making this video longer by getting into that topic. Will you be getting into that topic for civilians in another video? If so, do you have any plans to break down military logistical approaches that would be feasible for civilians? Or how "what isn't feasible for civilians" can be adapted or possible changes to those approaches to make them workable for us? You brought up the topic of civil unrest and defending our homes, but how do you think, calling upon your time in areas where immediate and prolonged civil unrest were common place, things change in the event of prolonged civil unrest where people may be entrenched, defending themselves and their homes for extended periods of time? Or immediately after the period of unrest and there aren't things in place to secure lawful order and supplies when civilians start moving out of neighborhoods and outlying areas seeking supplies, building materials, and things of that nature?

I like a robust kit, mine can take 12. But it was designed around woods and steep river banks where I tend to shoot. So I opted for a modern LBE set up over a chest rig, mainly to keep my center of gravity a little lower which helps on steep and muddy. Never mind how handy a buttpack can be for a poncho and other miscellaneous items, so they don't end up in the dump pouch.

  • @Blakewater0326

    @Blakewater0326

The dump pouch is often misused to carry extraneous items which don't belong on the fighting load. And that's why we have the Assault Load, the level of kit in which to carry mission essential items that don't need to be on the fighting load and provide a small amount of sustainment.

Perhaps it can help to explain 3 mag chest rigs as police/SWAT load outs. Most people dont understand the difference or NEED that differentiates a full military load out. They only see "looks cool/lightweight". Understanding that these gunfights can last hours is key.

  • @Blakewater0326

Even in hours long fights, we found that when you shoot to shoot accurately you don't end up blowing through your ammo. Its the guys that think "suppressive fire!" and burn down mags in the direction of the enemy that end up going through their load out in a single fight and start carrying 16 mags as an infantryman. The problem wasn't enough ammo, it wasn't enough training.

High magazine kit setups were common years back during jungle/dismounted/no resupply missions in high threat areas of operation. Kits evolved down to 6-8 mags for mobility and to reduce heat casualties as we transitioned to desert warfare. We learned to augment our kits/rucks with trucks, heavy weapons and emergency go-bags. Still never saw a three mag setup until i saw police running light versions of the military kit. I agree that training is key when considering how many mags a kit needs.

Great content enjoy the point of view. I do have a question. Why don’t you have everything past the 7th or 8th mag in your ruck? You always seem to think out your kit so I may have missed that part of the conversion. When I do my work set up I do what I think I’m going to need in a fight based on previous engagements and what I bring to sustain me. But that sustainment is in a bag or truck depending. Not sure if I'm fully understanding your question, and as I filmed this video quite a while ago I'm not remembering exactly what I said. However, if we're talking about my chest rig and why I have all my mags on there I do believe that I express I chose to carry my mags on my fighting load and free up space in the ruck. It saves me time and effort having it all on the fighting load rather than distributed. Is it THE way of going about it, no not really. Many guys chose to put 4-6 mags in their ruck, though many did so sloppily, and under the guise of just wanting an easier chest rig to wear. I appreciated the weight distribution as well. 12 pounds of mags, 4-9 pounds of grenades (based on whether or not I was carrying 40mm), 5 pounds of water, 2 pounds of radio; roughly 30 pounds of fighting load on the high end. With an 80-100 pound ruck on my back, those 30 pounds feels quite nice. And when I would drop the ruck for leaders recon or actions in a hide site, I hardly noticed the weight of my fighting load. There is always more than one way to skin the cat.
