LEVELING UP my workshop! - Building a second story in my garage workshop

Спорт

Today we’ll build a mezzanine in my garage workshop. On the top we will build an office, and underneath will be the home of Neckbeard Laboratories, where any "tinker" activities will take place.
This is a "residential" mezzanine usually used in loft apartments to gain some extra space. It's a little over 155 square feet in area. I also carefully chose the height to strike a good balance between both levels. Curtis, who is 6’ 4”, can easily clear both the office and the laboratory, but the workshop has 13’+ ceilings.

    I'll say it. Seth, you work hard. I feel like, in the world of KZread, you've never rested on your laurels through anything...multiple injuries, weather, a pandemic, etc. Even your fellow KZreadr friends always acknowledge that you're always working. The reason you've succeeded, is because you WORK HARD at it, and take it as a job, rather than an extension of a hobby that makes money. It never ceases to amaze me to see all of the things you've accomplished with your channel, and how you've impacted "the real world" as well. Your channel is not only the gold standard for MTB content, but most KZread channels could benefit greatly from copying the quality of your content! That's not said to diminish anything other content creators are doing, but it's a testament to WHY you're the gold standard. You get out what you put in....and your commitment is obvious! I look back now and see your older videos and think, "WOW! Was it really THAT long ago when Seth did that?" Thanks for all of the years of entertainment!

    This pre-fab mezzanine is pretty awesome. Could actually be a potential solution for a project I had in mind. Did you anchor it to the wall? If not, I'm curious to hear how stable it is just standing on 4 legs with no cross beam supports on the sides for rigidity? Like, I understand it's anchored to the floor but I'm wondering how much it flexes with all that weight sitting on just 4 poles of vertical tubing with no cross bracing (especially since the vertical tubes AND the floor "joists" are actually two pieces bolted together for adjustability).

  • @TimMaddux

    If you watch close when they’re doing the railing you can spot what look like wooden spacers between the mezzanine and the wall. My guess is that he did tie it in via those.

  • @ofekpearl

    I was wondering how stable that thing is, too. If I were to design this there would definitely be a cross cable or two, which you tension to make the structure stable.

  • @joshpirkle7717

    @joshpirkle7717

    Жыл бұрын

    As a structural engineer, that thing absolutely needs some form of lateral bracing or else wobbling is inevitable. The joist splices also make me pretty uneasy but I’m sure they rate it for a certain imposed live load (weight of furniture and anything else). And we all know that we’ve never seen Seth push something to it’s limits. 😂

    Definitely look into the 3D-printed "Gridfinity" organizing system for the lab below! There's tons of opportunity to give every little tool its own dedicated spot in each drawer, or on any of the work surfaces. It was started by Zack Freedman, and tons of people have added their own custom holders for pretty much anything, and if you can't find one for something you need to organize, make one!
