    I feel most people don't understand even getting hit in the chest with a baseball can kill you. It's called commotio cordis, where if you take a hard enough impact to the chest during a specific time during your hearts natural rhythm, then your heart just turns off. The average victim is a high school athlete, since their chest is less developed. But there are also all kinds of other names for blunt trauma to the chest that can stop your heart. Plenty of car accidents have them as well. Just be thankful each day you come home, and the world around you failed again to somehow kill you.

    Okay, here me out. Cheap plate carrier with these plates on one of those fancy ballistics dummies that has the rib cage and organs, center punch it with the .50 ball round or Hornaday and see what kinda damage it does with the plate stopping it. I think that'd be cool AF

  • @jm9371

    @jm9371

    I think that would be a very relevant test. Even though that first plate 'stopped' the round, you would likely still suffer massive organ trauma and a flailed chest. The energy needs to go somewhere; I would not be surprised if a hit like that would still be lethal.

    To me then it seems these are overbuilt and could be built lighter. If it can stop a 50 but there would be no point because it would kill you anyways, why not make it thinner and lighter so it will only stop things that wouldn’t also kill you regardless.

  • @asphaltannihilator157

    @asphaltannihilator157

    @@AFpaleoCon I'd still say the product has merit. A .50 cal rifle is pretty much never used as an anti-personnel rifle and rather as an anti-material/anti-armor rifle. So if that round were to pass through some concrete for example it may slow the round enough for an impact to not be fatal if struck in this armor.

    In reality, max penetration is almost never close to the muzzle. Max penetration occurs when the projectile is fully stabilized and the energy/sectional density is focused. The Army has a pamhlet out (probably 20-30yrs old)that shows the best distances by caliber for penetration, specific to defeating walls/armor/sandbags.

    Damn. Those plates are friggin tough products. Didn't think those level 4 Battle Steel armor plates would perform that well against .50BMG. Thank you Mike and Botach.

    1 50 cal Raufoss round = a 20 mm round . That RDX in it sends that penetrator through like a hot knife through butter .

    Have a feeling that the plate would catch the round but the pad might make it's way inside the wearer. That is some serious backface deformation.

    Awesome video. Looked like even if you did stack them to prevent penetration the rounds are still hitting hard enough to cave a person's chest in. Ouch. Excellent performance from the plates though, I was very impressed.

    That’s amazing those stopped the 50! But it’s also very important to note that if you are wearing those plates when you get hit with the 50 cal you are absolutely going to die from the impact trauma. But also those plates are freaking amazing

    Very impressive! Wonder if you could get one of those analog dummies with the bones, organs, and “blood” and strap one of these to it to see how much damage the impact itself would cause.
