One thing that could make a difference is angle of attack. 0° is worst cast, but if the plate is set at an angle that increased the material the bullet must pass through. Strapping it down also ensures more energy is imparted into it, vs allowing it to freestand :D

Edwin Sarkissian went from making video shooting his Titanium at an extremely tilted angle with no back support. He got lot of negative comments saying it's an invalid test. And then he shot it at 90 degree angle with no back support and almost killed himself many times. THEN he ended up shooting it at point blank using concrete wall as back support for the Titanium to be secure while firing it behind cover.. But THEN he STILL got hateful comments saying it's an invalid test. So he ended up putting steel I-beams against the concrete wall so his Titanium is secure AND have space behind the Titanium for the bullets to have chance to come out.
We see all the time what a bullet does to a plain body. Could you show us what happens if armor fails and a bullet passes through? Will the shrapnel make a larger wound? Will the damage be minimised?

Anecdotal. West Germany used to issue a flectarn pattern level 2 flak vest. Urban legend is it made wounds worse as the previous comment surmised. Soldiers didn't want it after the word got out how much worse combat injuries were. Sorry I don't have an authoritative source to back up the legend.

Agreed! Please do that video!
The RMA 1155 does not use a tile array strike face. It's monolithic. :D
Thanks for another great video!! I always enjoy the body armor torture tests!
Ordered some lvl 4 RMA about a week ago, really neat to see this video!

Nice!! Made me giggle.
After watching a lot of test videos, it seems like no armor is going to stop armor piercing rounds above 30-06 especially those with high velocities. Bottom line is I doubt there are many 338s that you would have to worry about in a situation where most of us would need armor like in a riot situation near our homes for normal 556 and 7.62. Great test nonetheless!
The ball round can deform more and dumps more energy, the ap round maintains it's shape more and doesn't do as much expansion damage

Perhaps with a few consecutive rounds as the plate loses integrity. Ceramic is pretty difficult to defeat at first try.

I think it was iraqvet that stacked two rma1155s one in front of the other, and the first one was already compromised. He shot it with an AP 50G, and the second one stopped it. Truly the king

The new 6.8 will be armor piercing most likely. With a hardened steel core it will have a good chance at beating most armors.
Shew that’s amazing the ceramic stopping that .338 AP. I personally own and trust RMA.
Cool camera system, and nice to see Justin doing some shooting.

Thank you for adding subtitles, hello from Yakutia
For the sake of experimental consistency, you have to have both plates supported in the exact same way in the exact same position. Having another plate behind the first plate invalidates the results of the tests on the second plate.
Very cool vid man!

I love my 338. Feeding it gets expensive. Even hand loads are expensive.
Without reading other comments i would say the AP round core held together vs the ball round shattering and creating a mini explosion kind of effect.
My Savage model 16 was slick as shit. Soon as I seen the trigger and how crisp and clean that pull was. I wondered if it was a Savage. And sure enough on the second shot Justin cleared that up. Savage makes such a great rifle!
Another fun test. That camera setup is super sweet! I’m sure it’s not cheap… the poop out in the field adds nice ambiance :)

@@GoingBallistic better than I thought
As far as I know, surface of the ceramic layer is hard enough to mushroom the bullet at that high speed, or at least the front of it. Then the power of the bullet is distributed to larger area as if it was pointy - that means less penetration. After that the steel layer has no problem stopping it. What about the crater in the case of non AP bullet, it is bigger due to ricochet of the shredded soft lead and jacket taking away all the corrupted ceramic material. The hard AP bullet core just get stuck into it and there is realy not much of it deflected away. This is just how I got it :)

HOT DAMN. That King of Armor plate really took that 338ap!?!?!
The ball round disintegrated on the lvl 4 ceramic and the spalling is what tore a bigger hole in the plate. The tungsten core round did not disintegrate which is why the hole is smaller. Ball ammo is not typically a open tip round, its a full metal jacket wrapped around a lead core.

Damn you guys are cool! Nice job! I think Buffman Matt liked these RMA plates too. Can't wait too see longer ranges. If you can and RMA gives you more you shall do a .50BMG test too with Ball vs AP from 500 yards or 1000yards if it is possible for Justin to hit from that distance accurately. Not that it would have any real life benefit, because even if it stops you probably die from the energy transfer but for fun. Only issue is that in case it stops the ball round it might copromise the a lot of the ceramic plate but hopefully the tile design let's you hit it one from each.

Ive shot a level IV with a 660 grain ball ammo at 100 yards and it stopped it. There is a video on the RMA website.
RMA is great stuff, top tier. AR500 on the other hand... pass pass pass
I would love to see you guys get your hands on a Lee-Enfield .303 British to add some more variety to the video's. No one really uses it on youtube unfortunately.
Nice vid guys. I'm not interested in much then armor penetration. & Justin check out notch cap, terra/aviator cut
30-06 AP will usually make light work of those AR 500 plates, so I already knew what the Lapua was gonna do, lol.

level 3 AR500 plates are rated up to .308 rounds. Ceramic plate Level 4 is rated to stop .30cal AP rounds.

I'd like to see you guys do some videos with the new M855A1 5.56 they're really hard to come by but they penetrate better than the old green tips. I don't know just a suggestion thank you guys

Boy that .338 LP is one bad 2 the bone party popper 🤙🏻
As is the case with all videos testing body armor, a true test is one round per plate. Non metal armor is compromised with each successive shot. But, that kind of testing requires some serious coin. Additionally, unless you're LE or military who needs armor? Good Vid!

I think the ceramic was able to absorb the energy better than the steel. And is the grain the same in both rounds? Slower speeds create a bigger blowout (If I remember correctly). Definitely surprising. Loved it as always man! As always can't wait for the next one!

As always cool, guys! I was very surprised by the armor. Thanks for the camera review. I've been dreaming for a long time that someone would invent something like this. I'm sick of riding to the targets! And the horse shit in the background is already becoming a classic of the channel! :) The picture is Justin in a minefield! :) Как всегда круто, парни! А лошадиное говно на заднем плане уже становится классикой канала! :) Картина - Джастин на минном поле! :)
Doubletap Ammo makes an extremely powerful 338 lapua loading its 300 grains at 3000 FPS. Far more powerful than typical over the counter 338. Not saying it’s going to go through but the backface might still get you from it.

Ah 338 Lapua Magnum. Possibly my favorite caliber after the 22LR.
From what I read it’s that the AP round holds it’s shape better which is what makes it an AP round due to its core being a stronger metal where as standard FMJ is copper covered in lead

Were already there.
Guys, I work with body armor engineers every day. They said that after the second shot, the armor was compromised due to the large vertical/horizontal lines produced by the 1st Ap round. If he would have hit closer to the area you designated for the 2nd AP round, 8/10 it would have taken it. All in all The armor did its job and if the shots were placed differently it probably would have stopped another one. It’s over a 200 layers of compressed Kevlar, and Lexan plexi based fibers tucked on the inside. Plus the lightweight resin is applied before it’s put in a massive press and cured. The then ceramic front is applied to the composite plate. This is straight from the horses mouth.

the hollowpoint mushrooms and expands pushing material out the AP just punches that tiny hole because it doesn't it just dumps the core into it
that AR500 stuff is so damned tough ... esp a half inch. As badass as a 338 L is ... yes, even 4500 lb-ft ... it's IMPRESSIVE. I know that 14.5mm Lathi round wasn't quite full power ... but that thing is massive and it couldn't penetrate the 1" of AR500 or maybe AR550 to further make the point of how impressive this AP round was. And that ceramic plate..?? It's really hard to say what's more impressive. Great ... GREAT test guys.
Nice camera system. I have two pairs of 25km 5G wifi to stream cameras through.
Just out of curiosity. What is the energy transfer through the plate to the sternum and what a thoracic surgeon has to say. Maybe plate stops round but, energy transfer turns lungs into soup.
I watched a vid of an old kar98 with armor piercing surplus ammo going right through ar500 I want to see it against that ceramic plate I’m curious.
Love all your videos and the barbed wire seems to be holding it's own. lol

I don't think you'd be running any marathons after taking a hit like that, but you'd be alive. That ceramic armor is pretty darn impressive even if you'd feel like a turtle wearing enough to cover your torso front and back effectively.
That backing material is Kevlar
I expected the.338 be more effective, great video.

It would be...at about one eighth of the range! I don't know what the BC of the AP round is, nor the bullet weight... but I am pretty sure it's less than the 338 Winchester Magnum energy at 25 yards given that the Winchester round is only just over 150 fps slower than the Lapua at the muzzle! Too bad that they don't test it at 25 yards, 0 degrees... like Buffman does... especially given how hard they are to get!
So where did you source 338 lapua AP then?….?
Perhaps having a level 4 armor plate right behind level 3 had something to do with not penetrating the level 3.
How long is the barrel length and the overall length of this rifle?
new toys! sweet!
If that was worn by a person. Would the spalling have hit the lower face. Chin area?

Remarkable for something so light in weight...... It would still be a hell of a wallop, which might break ribs etc, but you'd have a good chance of surviving such a shot.
dope!!!
I don't know what the barrel length on that gun is, but perhaps a longer barrel would have given it more velocity?
ive got the RMA 1155s in my carrier
I'd be really interested to see what a 30 cal AP round would do from a long action ultra mag like 300 RUM or 30-338 WBY
