One thing that could make a difference is angle of attack. 0° is worst cast, but if the plate is set at an angle that increased the material the bullet must pass through. Strapping it down also ensures more energy is imparted into it, vs allowing it to freestand :D

Edwin Sarkissian went from making video shooting his Titanium at an extremely tilted angle with no back support. He got lot of negative comments saying it's an invalid test. And then he shot it at 90 degree angle with no back support and almost killed himself many times. THEN he ended up shooting it at point blank using concrete wall as back support for the Titanium to be secure while firing it behind cover.. But THEN he STILL got hateful comments saying it's an invalid test. So he ended up putting steel I-beams against the concrete wall so his Titanium is secure AND have space behind the Titanium for the bullets to have chance to come out.

We see all the time what a bullet does to a plain body. Could you show us what happens if armor fails and a bullet passes through? Will the shrapnel make a larger wound? Will the damage be minimised?

Anecdotal. West Germany used to issue a flectarn pattern level 2 flak vest. Urban legend is it made wounds worse as the previous comment surmised. Soldiers didn't want it after the word got out how much worse combat injuries were. Sorry I don't have an authoritative source to back up the legend.

After watching a lot of test videos, it seems like no armor is going to stop armor piercing rounds above 30-06 especially those with high velocities. Bottom line is I doubt there are many 338s that you would have to worry about in a situation where most of us would need armor like in a riot situation near our homes for normal 556 and 7.62. Great test nonetheless!

For the sake of experimental consistency, you have to have both plates supported in the exact same way in the exact same position. Having another plate behind the first plate invalidates the results of the tests on the second plate.

As far as I know, surface of the ceramic layer is hard enough to mushroom the bullet at that high speed, or at least the front of it. Then the power of the bullet is distributed to larger area as if it was pointy - that means less penetration. After that the steel layer has no problem stopping it. What about the crater in the case of non AP bullet, it is bigger due to ricochet of the shredded soft lead and jacket taking away all the corrupted ceramic material. The hard AP bullet core just get stuck into it and there is realy not much of it deflected away. This is just how I got it :)

The ball round disintegrated on the lvl 4 ceramic and the spalling is what tore a bigger hole in the plate. The tungsten core round did not disintegrate which is why the hole is smaller. Ball ammo is not typically a open tip round, its a full metal jacket wrapped around a lead core.

Damn you guys are cool! Nice job! I think Buffman Matt liked these RMA plates too. Can't wait too see longer ranges. If you can and RMA gives you more you shall do a .50BMG test too with Ball vs AP from 500 yards or 1000yards if it is possible for Justin to hit from that distance accurately. Not that it would have any real life benefit, because even if it stops you probably die from the energy transfer but for fun. Only issue is that in case it stops the ball round it might copromise the a lot of the ceramic plate but hopefully the tile design let's you hit it one from each.

Guys, I work with body armor engineers every day. They said that after the second shot, the armor was compromised due to the large vertical/horizontal lines produced by the 1st Ap round. If he would have hit closer to the area you designated for the 2nd AP round, 8/10 it would have taken it. All in all The armor did its job and if the shots were placed differently it probably would have stopped another one. It’s over a 200 layers of compressed Kevlar, and Lexan plexi based fibers tucked on the inside. Plus the lightweight resin is applied before it’s put in a massive press and cured. The then ceramic front is applied to the composite plate. This is straight from the horses mouth.

I know that 14.5mm Lathi round wasn't quite full power ... but that thing is massive and it couldn't penetrate the 1" of AR500 or maybe AR550 to further make the point of how impressive this AP round was. And that ceramic plate..?? It's really hard to say what's more impressive. Great ... GREAT test guys.

It would be...at about one eighth of the range! I don't know what the BC of the AP round is, nor the bullet weight... but I am pretty sure it's less than the 338 Winchester Magnum energy at 25 yards given that the Winchester round is only just over 150 fps slower than the Lapua at the muzzle! Too bad that they don't test it at 25 yards, 0 degrees... like Buffman does... especially given how hard they are to get!

Remarkable for something so light in weight...... It would still be a hell of a wallop, which might break ribs etc, but you'd have a good chance of surviving such a shot.

I don't know what the barrel length on that gun is, but perhaps a longer barrel would have given it more velocity?

I'd be really interested to see what a 30 cal AP round would do from a long action ultra mag like 300 RUM or 30-338 WBY

Adding another plate in the back strengthens the first medium, and makes it less likely for a bullet to pass the first armor.

U.S. Troops with body armor in the Middle East were getting thrown on their backs with 7.62 x 39. I'm sure the 338 Lapua will do the same thing, except they won't get back up!

I'd like to see you do that same test with level 3 and level 4 ar500 plates. Against level 3 and level 4 ceramic plates. That would make it even test!
