Letting Go of Controlling: The Path of Freedom, Part 2 - Tara Brach

Letting Go of Controlling: The Path of Freedom, Part 2 - Tara Brach
While it’s natural to try to control our life experience, our chronic controlling cuts us off from presence and obscures the loving awareness that is our essence. This series of talks explores how we can let go in four key domains of controlling: clinging to thoughts, resisting feelings, holding tight to beliefs and armoring our heart.
We look at how egoic controlling manifests individually and as a society; the process of awakening from exclusive identification with a separate ego/self; what it means to die into a larger reality and the similarities of psychedelics and meditation in the process of letting go.
The gift of releasing the grip of controlling is true freedom; inhabiting the intrinsic beauty of our beings, and having our lives be an expression of creativity, wisdom and love.

Danke Tara🙏.

This video is amazing control is the reason I have trauma in the first place because the people around me are obsessed with control and failed to recognise my suffering and I was trying to control everything to stay sane but so much has happened and knocked me down but I'm still on my spiritual journey

Thank you for your beautiful talks Tara and your honesty. Every time I listen to you I feel another piece of the veil is lifted. These two talks were among your most powerful and I so recognised myself in much you spoke about. 'When thoughts arise, just simply let go and reopen your awareness to the senses.' I wish everyone in the world could hear this message because its key. There's a reason why so many great sages like Abhinavagupta paid so much attention to the sense of touch because It's this inner touch that truly helps us connect with who we are. Thank you.

I've been meditating for a year. Today some things you said helped me see it in a new way. I have a new approach after this inspiration. I was sort of losing sight of the basic purpose of meditating. Thank you.

I thought you might speak of self-compassion in your story of feeling attacked by a student. Without feeling compassion for myself, I don't have the capacity to unclench at all. There's a softening on MY part toward the critic within me, the ego running amok, and so on. Yes, it's a gift. Thank you so much for adding your Light to that whole process. It reminds me that my own practice of presence sacred. Deep bows, Tara.

Beautiful thank you. I loved this and was particularly amazed about the Ancient Greek mysteries /rituals and their powers of equalizing. Also normalizing seasons of birth and death. Yes, very dangerous for ego controlled power hungry humans. Thanks ❤

"The controlling ego..." sounds so much like part of the description of the Piscean Age. We may be on the brink of the Aquarian Age where things will happily change for the next many centuries.

Omg, Girl, you are such a blessing to everyone who is lucky enough to find you. I am in a Kundalini Awakening process....this has been going on for several years, the last 4 have been very intense....I loved the historic information you provided....I appreciate the stress on not judging ourselves or others.....I can see how fearful I am to stay with the intense feelings that arise......Your talk brings up a space within in which I can open to these intense feelings...thank you for this precious talk. I know you can't read all of the comments on your yourtube channel, however, I just wanted to write out my graditude to you for brining this awareness which is so needed. Namaste'

I am always impressed at your breadth of knowledge, along with your sense of humor and soothing voice, and how no matter how i may react knowingly (i think) to the title of a talk with some shame or fear (knowing what i need to work on), you never take me to such places in the talk-i am always surprised at how your talks unfold, and at how much a can learn while feeling utterly non-judged, and devoid of hierarchy. Thank you for these gifts to all!🤗🫶🏻

Can I add my respect for you, Tara Brach, to those who have commented already ? ❤ 💚 'Perforce' I must listen in quietude and try to surrender to your 'eastern perspective'. Which stands, as much as any beacon of wisdom and hope, as the 'core western philosophers on existence'. Heideggers, Sartres, and the 'heretical' Christian Gnostics of the high middle ages who also realised the deep contradiction between living v dying and being in process of death - that can't be compehended as rational or constuctive, when 'grown combatant men' will kill each other in the most barbaric manner. While (mostly) women suffer in grief, thinking of the mutilated remains of their soldier sons and civilian relatives caught in the crossfire and also loved. The only approach to dilemmas as life v death is RADICAL ACCEPTANCE of Will or Fate or 'God' of some sort ?

Dear Tara I was struck by your example of the public email and noticed a hesitation in me in writing to question some of the things you are presenting for fear of activating the same response in you. However one of the responses I had to your story was that the energy in your response to that antagonist still seemed a bit tight so maybe this offers another layer of discovery. There is something operating in our world right now that has been able to grow because people have been taught by various spiritual disciplines that it is not OK to set boundaries and say - actually I experienced that as an attack. We have been trained to think that we must be wrong for feeling intensely. In many ways people are taught to sort themselves out rather than to be open in their expression of anger and communicate this directly to the antagonist. Instead it is hidden in tight passively aggressive responses that are not clean, because actually our soul is rightly outraged. We have to learn how to be more authentic in conflicts if we want the global bullying to stop. Your talk assisted me to see how afraid I am of maliciousness and often try to avoid it by pacifying people because I am scared if I stand up to them, the bullying gets worse. But actually it is a difficult thing to face that we have no ability to prevent malicious harm towards ourselves in the same way, we really have no way to prevent someone intent on killing themselves from doing so. And so it is left to a few in the world who have faced this fear to be imprisoned, poisoned and assasinated as they try and make obvious to the rest of us just how abusive power holders have become whilst the rest of us remain passive observers. No amount of mystery searching or denial will solve the need to speak up when outrage arises. I also have a different take on the mysteries held by women priestesses using herbs etc. Abuse of their power happened just as much with women over petty jealousies, lovers, the desire for admiration, influence and power. These are not exclusive problems with men. The problem as I see it, we just don't want to take up our own spiritual power because then we must face the kind of conflict that you avoided by seeing it as your problem in your example. It shatters the view we have of ourselves as "nice spiritual" people and threatens our social status. At the same time the other aspect of self enquiry and self understanding is essential so that we can see these kinds of ideas that we have been conditioned to passivity in particular ways which of course you present with such sweetness. Not sure I got this! Are psychedelics acceptable as a natural treatment for anxiety and to help with meditation? What about countries that don’t allow it? Is it part of an integrative treatment to incorporate psychedelics in the treatment?
