Let Us Never Forget: A Visit to the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rallying Grounds

In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I, continue our visit to Germany. We were driving from Regensburg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber when we decided to stop in Nürnberg, Germany to take a look at the Nazi Party Rallying Grounds and Documentation Center. When Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, he made Nurnberg the site of the Nazi Party Rallies. The Zeppelin Field with its grandstand and high tribune was the site of the Nazi’ biggest rallies; including the 1934 rally infamously seen in Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will. The Documentation Center traces the evolution of the National Socialist movement and looks at Nürnberg’s role in the movement, including the construction of the Rallying Grounds, where the Nazi Rallies took place. In this episode we visit the Nazi Congress Hall and walk around the lake to the Zeppelin field and the Zeppelin High Tribune.

Wow. What a place to visit. I don’t think I could go there. It is a pivotal place in history but also a place that generates so many horrible moments and showcased some of the worse of humanity. Thank you for sharing with us. How did it feel going there?

It is hard to describe. It is a place that elicits contemplation, but is also strange, unreal and eerie.

It was eerie visiting the old rally grounds. But Germany does a wonderful job of remembering the dark periods in its past without celebrating or glorifying it! kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4mlprukh6iZetY.html
