I saw this last night and listened to both of your reviews this morning. With you on pretty much everything - the top notch performances, the insanely gorgeous imagery, the rib-shaking sound design & score, the riveting action. The sound and the fury are on point. As for what they signify though ... The thing that stopped me from loving it as a whole (which you briefly touch on here in the second vid via the comment from your wife) was the pacing. For me it wasn't just Paul's emotional journey that felt rushed, it was a lot of the story of his development as a desert warrior. A prime example is the scene where Stilgar sends Paul on the test/training mission to cross part of the desert. A classic trial setup. We seem him leave, we see Chani intercept him along the way to help him on his trial, but we never experience the payoff of that trial - it just jump cuts from the middle of that trial to one of the crawler assaults. Part One felt like it _revealed_ its story organically, but Part Two felt like, perhaps in order to cram 200+ minutes worth of story into 165 minutes, they hacked out too much of the connecting tissue between the Big Moments to let the emotional development breath and sink in. To put it another way, Part One feels like experiencing a story _and_ a ride, but Part Two feels like experiencing only a ride. A magnificently thrilling ride, to be sure, but overall a frustratingly unaffecting one in terms of meaning and emotion. I'm curious how many others have the same take. I haven't read or listened to a single other review yet (O42 is _ALWAYS_ the first port of call) or read any reactions from any other online communities. I _can_ report that of the group of 5 of us who saw it last night, 3 (including me) had the reaction I'm describing, 1 loved it and the other just thought it was fine. It might also be worth noting that the 2 who shared my feeling about the janky, impatient pacing are not grouchy old bastards like me - they're people who still love pretty much all of the popcorn cinema (superhero movies, Ghostbusters etc.) I've become so jaded with.

You know...I didn't realize when I was watching it that I was missing anything. That's why I need to see it again! I was just gobsmacked by the movie, and I feel that if I did watch it again, I'd be able to settle into the story being told more. I guess from a movie-going standpoint, it's an absolute triumph, ESPECIALLY considering the story it's adapting. I also know Denis has very famously said that he doesn't believe in extended or "director's" cuts of his movies, because the theatrical experience is what he set out to make, but considering that there has already been word of Tim Blake Nelson's role being cut and more with the mentats (human computers), especially with Stephen McKinley Henderson who played Thufir Hawat in the first part - I would LOVE to see an extended cut of this.

Had a blast watching it last weekend. It did better than the first IMO. Fixed a few minor issues I had with the first. Such as music and sound design at moments in the first were very overpowering, I didn't notice that at all in the second. One of those movies even if you don't like I think it's such as welcome thing to see get success. Since it is (even if someone doesn't enjoy it personally) quality film making and giving people with a vision a big budget to make it. I didn't mind some of the changes. Dune is one of those books I think you can never adapt perfectly. It is just so unique, strange, and it's own thing. An example I always bring up are the books really doesn't have "magic". Stuff like the voice and Paul's prescience isn't actually seeing the future it's that he is able to predict things to the nth degree. And stuff like that is so hard to really "show" compared to write/read. Also I don't care what Dave says Timothée Chalamet is so dreamy haha

Agreed on all points. Lynch’s Dune included most or all of the things that people have been complaining about being left out of Denis’ take, and you know…it took me three tries to get through it because I kept falling asleep! It’s just so beautifully made that I am still thinking about it daily. And you know, I watched Part One again the other day and it was better than my last viewing! And you’re right…Chalamet is awesome! Dave is WRONG.

I really liked it! Never felt slow and I fought the urge to run out to the toilet in the middle of it. :D The sound and music was so good, almost want to go and see it again just for that reason. Oh, I also noticed that Austin Butler talked like Stellan, for sure that he picked up his accent, and I think it was awesome. You knew right away that these characters has a connection in just that, and it's done so nicely. Will there be any continuation of this, and does Frank Herber's book (books?) end this way as well?

Yeah, music and sound design were so good! I need to watch it again, for sure. In the book, there was more of a time jump (his sister is already born) but the spirit of the story is there. Chani also accepts things, and that is different, but I enjoyed the changes. These two movies were in the first Dune book, but the next is “Dune: Messiah”, and Denis already said he’s working on it! Herbert was disappointed that people came away from the first book saying Paul was a hero, and Messiah leans into the fact that it’s _probably_ not the best. Super looking forward to it!
