Thank you so much for this! I have 3 chickens and this year I'm getting 4 more chicks. I have had them 3 yrs and I thought I better worm my hens before I have new ones. I have never seen worms. So I think I will just monitor their droppings, watch their behavior and only worm when necessary. I didn't give my children antibiotics for sniffles because of resistance and they are grown and healthy, lol and I am gonna treat my very pampered flock of kids the same!

We haven't had eggs in our year with our girls. I did give them pumpkins from the garden last fall, winter and in the spring. I know that no formal study has been done on the effectiveness of pumpkin seeds on worms. I thought "What the heck." Whether it worked, or not, they loved chowing on the pumpkins! Cheers!

Just use diatomaceous earth. Mix DE in with the feed a few times a year and voilà! You can eat the eggs during "treatment" too.

@@realsimplemama hi Sarah me again! It sounds like ivermectin is hard to obtain, and I'm a bit nervous. Question is it possible that the de food grade I put in the coop may have already killed the worms and that's why she's pooped them out?

DE is deactivated when it gets wet, and a chicken's digestive tract is nothing if not wet. There are no clinical studies showing DE is effective. Fenbendazole (Safeguard) and Ivermectin are proven safe and kill worms.

@@ASmileAdayful no. De will not cure your animals of worms and parasites. De is really not safe to use around your animals at all. It can and will cause severe respiratory illness. Anyone who swears by the use of de has only seen results due to the other actions they took while treating their animals. Which includes changing environment, changing their bedding more often and keeping things more clean. Changing or adding to their diet, all of which helps boost the animals immune systems, helping them better fight off any illnesses and parasites. It was never the de. Please do not use de around your animals.

Hello, I’m so sorry about this. The pour on Ivermax I got at Tractor Supply. You apply it to their skin on their shoulder blades/back and it absorbs through the skin into the blood. I would also look up gapeworms since you’re talking about yawning and coughing.

Happy you did this video. I've had a small flock for 1 year and only used DE, ACV, Oregano oil, pumpkin seeds, Red Chili pepperflakes, everything that everyone recommends holistically. However once we hatched our own chicks, the flock has had worms and those methods aren't working any longer. Thank you!!!!

Hey! You’re exactly right - you have lots of great ideas to prevent worms. I’d treat every chicken just in case and keep track of it - you can consider treating once every six to twelve months as a precaution if you so choose. Good luck! I’m here for you. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Hi! That’s a good question. Technically yes the medicine will still be just as effective. But remember that their bodies go into “just the basics” mode. The med works by being absorbed by the skin into the bloodstream (at least the topical ones do) so that’s not an issue. 🤞🏼❤️🐓

Ohhh ok. It’s basically a weird malfunction where an egg does not keep moving down through the oviduct as normal, so it sits in accumulates and ends up basically being mostly pus. But it should be a one time thing, there is an actual condition if it keeps recurring and I believe there is nothing you can do except either cull the hen or just let them continue to lay lash eggs.

I understand your point - the concept is that no one has done the testing and research to be sure. But if any gets into the eggs it would be a minute amount and not enough to count as another full dose.

Unfortunately no. You cannot control when they molt, but it is usually around their birthday so every year around the time that they originally hatched. So at least you can normally plan!
