Let’s Talk About the Word of Wisdom

so what's the deal with tea, caffeinated sodas and cbd products?

02:12 - So what is the Word of Wisdom?
02:45 - Where did the Word of Wisdom come from?
04:50 - What exactly can Latter-day Saints not partake in? What are they recommended to partake in?
06:51 - My testimony of the Word of Wisdom
09:20 - Why don't we drink alcohol if Jesus drank wine?
09:48 - Is any caffeine against the Word of Wisdom? Can we drink soda?
11:52 - What kinds of tea are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints allowed to drink?
13:32 - Is drinking Boba Tea breaking the Word of Wisdom?
13:41 - Are CBD products against the Word of Wisdom?
16:07 - Is vegetarianism against the Word of Wisdom?
17:24 - Why do members still eat so much meat if we are told to eat meat sparingly?
18:08 - How can we explain the Word of Wisdom to those not of our faith?
In this week's video, I get real about the LDS Word of Wisdom! The Word of Wisdom is a healthcode in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) that commands members to abstain from certain substances including alcohol, tobacco, drugs, coffee and tea. It also encourages members to live a healthy lifestyle by consuming foods that are good for the body. Some parts of the Word of Wisdom are super clear (like don't drink alcohol), but some things can get blurred (what kinds of tea are okay to drink and what kinds aren't?). In this video I read the exact guidelines given to us and provide some personal opinions for the things that require prayerful personal interpretation.
In the video I answer questions from my Instagram followers about the origins of the Word of Wisdom, caffinated soda, tea, CBD products, vegetarianism and more! I also offer my testimony of the Word of Wisdom.
What advice do you have for following the Word of Wisdom as a Latter-day Saint? Let me know in the comments below!

The caffeine thing is an interesting topic. Back in the day, caffinated plants used to be used for migraines and headaches, for hyperactivity, or mental awareness. Coffee was sometimes the easiest form available back then. Now days, we have other methods to relieve headaches, and peppermint tea (or peppermint oil; for external use) so we don't NEED to turn to coffee as a medicine. Now, if we really need a caffeine boost for any reason, we have choices our ancestors did not have. On the topic of tea, too, black tea comes from a specific plant, Camellia sinensis. Green and white tea (white tea being the baby green tea leaves) is from the same plant but has not undergone withering or oxidation. Herbal tea is as it sounds: tea made from leaves or flowers of the everyday culinary herbs. You can even make tea from flowers in your garden like gardenias, roses, pansies (all good in salads, too!), chamomile, dandelion flowers and leaves, you can make tea from a citrus peel or apples, or cinnamon sticks. Herbal teass also have nutrients (like rosehip tea is packed with vitamin C!), chamomile and rose have vitamin E, etc. Herbal teas always have a nutrient benefit.

I would think green tea skincare products or skincare/exfoliants containing caffeine (coffee beans) in them is ok, since they don't have the same potentially addictive qualities to them when used in that way on the skin, vs. when they are consumed orally and circulated throughout the body in a much higher dosage.

I'm an ex latter day saint but I'm considering rejoining. I want to follow the word of wisdom regardless. I can't drink caffeine as I take a certain medication but I do drink decaf tea and coffee. I also smoke and drink but not to excess. I feel like the word of wisdom is a good thing to follow but I can't seem to stop smoking or drinking alcohol/coffee etc I have a coffee substitute I like but I always go for coffee. I enjoy herbal teas but I always go for regular as it's cheaper. I can't seem to kick the habit. I also struggle with an eating disorder and I know undereating is harmful to the body and I don't really know how to take care of my body. Maybe the word of wisdom can help. Great video!

certain animals definitely don’t exist just for humans to eat and i don’t know any members that eat meat sparingly, they eat it once or twice a day! i think it says to eat meat sparingly because lots of people eat too much as opposed to too little. think about the planet, animals and your health!

I always find it interesting that people say they follow the Word of Wisdom - and also order a frappuccino or something with mocha in the name of the beverage. Believe that a beverage with "ccino" or "mocha" means it is a type of coffee product. Personally I don't like the smell of coffee (even that aisle in the grocery store) - so avoid going to Starbucks mainly for two reasons... 1) their hot chocolate is never chocolaty enough, and 2) of course it smells like coffee. Also I served a mission in Japan and green tea it is *not* one of the few teas missionaries & members should drink. We could have mugicha - which is a wheat tea and takes a while to get used to. I haven't had any since returning from Japan in the late 80's.

so i need help. i’ve been a member for 6 years and i’ve never been able to stop drinking coffee. also i drink alcohol sometimes socially too. reason being, i just don’t believe that it was a real revelation. and i went on a mission and everything......it’s not like i go around saying “the WOW is fake!!!”, this is a personal struggle for me. so i truly would love someone to help me with this. i do have a testimony of joseph smith btw. but i just don’t believe in the WOW bc it’s waaaay too pointless in my opinion (at least coffee/tea part). and i’m tired of people’s answers just being “yeah it makes no sense but where’s your faith? this is a commandment to test your faith!” ummm sorry no i don’t follow things blindly. anyways please comment if you feel like you can help me bc i would really appreciate this😭🤍

Hey girl, thanks for your comment! In the video I made points about how substance addiction takes away our agency (one of the greatest blessings we’ve been given) and that mind altering substances hinder our ability to hear the Savior. Also, people didn’t think tobacco/alcohol wasn’t harmful to the body at the time of the revelation so some refused to follow it. But research in later years have proved them to be harmful - so even though coffee and tea don’t have harmful effects right now (and maybe the never will), what it really comes down to sacrifice. The Word of Wisdom is definitely a real commandment - otherwise it wouldn’t be in our scripture and be a requirement to receive a temple recommend. Despite the health benefits, Heavenly Father wants us to make sacrifices to prove that we’re faithful just like the Savior sacrificed His life for us. I would definitely recommend praying about this. Praying to receive confirmation that the Word of Wisdom was a real revelation. I hope this helps 🤍

I can relate to this. The only way I know how to help is to bear my testimony on this. So 2 summers ago, I got little sleep, and so I'd accompany my autistic child to school and stay there with her all day. At the tine, I was inactive at the church, and had grown up in a coffe-drinking home, so it was an easy boost to fall onto. But soon it went from 2 cups of coffee a day to sometimes 12-18!! And about 1/3 of that was the super strong Starbucks coffee. Well, needless to say, I began having severe stomach pain and bloating. I had given myself a severe case of GERD. In fact, I had programned my stomach to produce an extremely weak acid by ingesting SO much acid (from the coffee). I ruined my stomach AND my throat, because acid reflux happened so often. Because I have asthma, and inflammation from coffee irritation put me into an asthma attack. I still suffer from it today. Sometimes even drinking water first thing in the a.m. gives me acid reflux. I am also terrified of coffee headaches, which are the worst pain in the world (and I've given borth twice!). So, My advice for weaning off coffee: switch to caffinated soda, then energy drinks (just make sure they don't have black or green tea; I prefer Monster Juice). I know the energy drink thing sounds weird, but oddly, there is no headache from not drinking an energy drink. Soda can give you a "coffee" headache, though, and more closely resembles coffee. So start with soda, then switch to low-carbonated energy drinks in place of coffee. It will take time to adjust fully. But it will be worth it.

I struggle with the WOW as well! I understand alcohol and smoking but I grew up in the south and I was not raised in the church like my husband. Sweet tea and coffee has always been apart of my life, I can go without it. I’ve done it many times but it just doesn’t make sense to me and anytime I ask why? I’m always met with an “idk”....it says not to drink hot drinks but we LDS members drink hot chocolate like it’s going out of style. Iced tea/hot tea is wrong but herbal tea is okay? It’s hot as well... there is just to many holes, also let’s not forget Jesus drank wine as she said above and anytime I make that statement I’m told that “there wasn’t many options back then to drink” but it’s Jesus!!! Even if the WOW is modern day revelation it was JESUS! He could have turned that water into anything and he chose wine! Also “drink of the wine and be merry!” I don’t do any drugs but yes I drink coffee and tea. I know members who follow the word of wisdom but they drink monster energy drinks, soda, etc... which is even worse in my opinion than tea and coffee. I have PCOS and it’s so hard for me to lose weight. Anytime I ask my doctor what to drink of my diet I’m always told green tea and black coffee 🙄 it’s just confusing and I’m so tired of not having an answer.

You don't NEED to drink anything in the mornings 🙂 (besides water!). I don't know how coffee became a morning drink, because it started out as an after supper drink (not the same as a nightcap or social drink). Don't feel pressured to drink anything in the morning, or anytime, just because other people are addicted.

*Tea* is developed/processed from Camellia sinensis native to China/East Asia. Common forms are black tea, green tea, white tea, oolong tea. It is a Word of Wisdom no-no. The proscribed "hot drinks" in D&C 89:9 are interpreted as tea & coffee. Herbal "tea" that does not contain Camellia sinensis is technically not *tea* per se & depending on ingredients, not a WoW problem. Most herbal teas are quite healthful & full of beneficial nutrients. Green tea & white tea confer undeniable health benefits but are specifically forbidden by the Word of Wisdom. Thus it is as a demonstration of obedience that we comply with prophetic counsel by abstaining & not because it is harmful to health. The overwhelming consensus of longstanding nutrition science re tea as a healthful beverage is well established.

The word of wisdom says to eat meat sparingly only in times of winter and famine where other foods where not assessable at the time. God makes it very clear that if we can he would prefer if we ate no meat at all. Most Mormons do not follow the word of wisdom and the prophets do not push it enough because they love meat more than they love gods commandments. The church has been corrupted in some places
