Why My Mom Joined the Mormon Church (+ 3 Tips for Converts!)

"it was the hardest thing I've ever done"
In this week's video, I was joined by my incredible mom to hear what her experience was like joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the LDS Church or Mormon Church). She started taking lessons from the LDS Missionaries at the age of 19 and joined the LDS Church shortly after. During this process she had to completely turn around her life and made many sacrifices. In this video my mom gives advice to converts of the church and gives advice to those who don't have supportive family members.

Oh goodness, don't know if I have any advice to give to new converts, not really good at giving it. But for me coming from a Protestant background and not being involved with religion for some time, it's a bit different. I did my research and went to the various Church websites, and then decided to meet with the missionaries and read the Book of Mormon. I was baptized in August of 2018 and I don't regret my decision. I may not always go to church and do as I'm supposed to, I still love the church and Ward family; and loved that I joined. My advice, if any, would be: do your research, watch Mimi and Saints Unscripted videos; and if it feels right for you, then join.

So grateful for this video! Mimi your mum really needs to have her own channel or write a book or something! I have a question. How had your mum being a convert helped you? Like did it help you realise you had to have your own faith and testimony? Make you more grateful for the family support? Etc?

I totally agree!! 😍 And those are great questions!! I feel like being raised by a convert really helped me appreciate the gospel in my life and gave me the desire to develop my OWN testimony at a young age! I could not be more grateful for the sacrifices my mom made so that I could grow up in this incredible church! ❤️

I am a Christian, and despite having always gone to an Episcopal church, I would say I don't identify with one particular denomination. I am however happy with my relationship with Christ. Anyway, I think my hesitation about the LDS church has been rooted in the strangeness of the temple ceremonies. A lot of the "research" I've done makes it look like a freemason ceremony, which makes me feel very uncomfortable. I do recognize that pretty much every religion has things that are rooted in potentially controversial things, but for some reason, this seems bizarre to me. Are you able to help me understand this any more?

I’m not an expert, but I’ll see if I can help at all! First, I think it’s important to remember that we all just want to be better people (at least, most of us). Second, the way it was explained to me was that God is trying to explain these heavenly principles in ways we understand. Joseph Smith had freemasonry on his mind, and so God explained these concepts in that context. So it’s not so much that God wanted it to be like freemasonry. He just explained temple ordinances in that way because it made sense to Joseph. There’s continual revelation about the church and the temple, and a lot of prophets have changed things, making the temple experience more focused on God. I don’t think it matters too much, because I’ve experienced my own revelation. I know how God talks to us. I don’t see the relevance of the temple’s supposed connection with freemasonry with my own personal worship of God. I’ll pray to God however I feel like I should. Freemasonry doesn’t concern me.

Abby C thanks for your insight! I have a lot of respect for many LDS members, and particularly like the emphasis on family. It’s hard to really get a good sense just because whenever I watch videos on the LDS church it is typically from people who are on either end of a spectrum.

FHLAXLVRMD you’re welcome! Happy to (try to) answer whatever questions you might have! I’m not perfectly unbiased, but I do try to see from both perspectives. And I agree, the emphasis on family is awesome in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints!
