Let's talk about... Incidental findings

This film is part of our 'Let's Talk About... Genomic Testing' series, produced in collaboration with genetic counsellor Amanda Pichini. In this film, our experts cover 'incidental findings'.
Incidental findings are genetic results that could be returned, following a test, that are in addition to any results related to the original clinical question. For example, someone could be referred for testing for a neurological condition but could receive a result that shows that their genetics means they are at increased risk from a certain type of cancer.
As our experts explain, these results can often be challenging as they are more unexpected, so they recommend discussing the possibility of incidental findings with patients before testing to prepare them in advance. It's also important to note that individuals have the right to opt out of receiving such information if they wish.
Please note that these films were made during the Covid-19 pandemic, and were filmed via video call in order to comply with government guidelines. As a result, there are occasional dips in sound. Subtitles and transcripts are available.
Health Education England's Genomics Education Programme is developing a substantial education programme to inform healthcare professionals about the impact of genomics on clinical practice. This video is the one of the many educational resources from the programme.
