In today’s episode of the deep dive we’re going to be taking a close look at compasses. So, when I started to dive, like most divers, I was taught how to use a compass underwater. I’d used compasses before so it was fairly straight forward to convert that into using one underwater, but after my training I didn’t really use a compass very much, which was a mistake, because your compass is a very useful tool.

A compass is essential when diving solo.
That was simply the best explanation of a diving compass that I’ve seen on KZread .... and I’ve watched nearly all the vids on navigation 🧭 that are posted ..... as a seaman I was being confused by the reversal of the degrees on the card , and somewhere in my thick skull 💀 the penny was dropping that I was looking at the compass from the back rather than the front , like when your at sea 🌊 and then you revealed it for me ! On no other video is that explained , thank you 🙏 and I’ve subscribed ... now I’m going to watch it again
Personally, I like my compass on a retractor. It's there if I need it, and out of the way when I don't. I think no matter where your diving a compass can always get you out of a tight as long as you set your lubber line before you enter the water.
The key thing about digital compasses is that they do get out of calibration. My dive buddy lead us around in a circle in a lake trying to escape the featureless blue void before we realized we’d passed the one landmark we could make out three times. Afterwards he was said, “I guess I need to calibrate my compass.”
I just got my own personal reg set so I’m going to try moving my compass to the gauge side and see if I have an easier time. On the wrist, I’ve had lots of trouble getting the compass up into the right position to see while also keeping it flat.
Nice fins in the back ground. Got a set arriving on utila tomorrow for my tec 40/45/50! decided to scratch IDC for now.
My compass is on a slate so it’s always with me and easy to find but out of the way when I’m not using it
